I am just about to buy the map of florida so I can take my tomtom one with me. Do I need a special connector to power it up in an american car? Or can anyone tell me how long the battery lasts in a tomtom?

Nope normal car connector should work fine.

Claire ;)

The battery will last around 4 hrs without being plugged in, so be careful it dosn't get switched on when you are carrying it around in your bag, otherwise it may go dead like mine did!

When I plugged it back in to the car charger, it would charge but would not switch on as it had completely discharged!!

If this happens to you, there is a tiny pin sized hole on the underneath side where it fits onto the charger/base unit.... You need to carry a pin & just push it into the hole to reset the internal system... Wait about 10 seconds then switch on.

Don't worry, this will not wipe any of the personnal settings, its just a reset switch...

You will not regret taking it with you, we found ours invaluable ...

Hope you have a great time..!

as said before, you can just use the normal cigarette lighter connector. My wife drove when we went and we found taking the sat nav really helps. particularly on your 1st day or 2. Also, if there are any restaurants you fancy the look of but are not sure exactly where they are you can just find them using it

If you can use a map Sat Nav is not needed around the theme park area, its very easy to understand and well signed. If you are not good with maps or too lazy to be bothered with maps they are very good. I got my TomTom maps of ebay for my PDA/sat nav. Don't use it in Florida as I know it almost as well as home but it was fantastic in Los Angeles, trying it in Vegas in 7 weeks.

I used TomTom6 US south east maps on my PDA with my small GPS reciever back in April and I found it valuable. As soon as we got "on property" we turned it off and followed the signs as a few times it sent us to CM entrances!
Be warned that you will probably still have to navigate from the airport to your hotel by map as the GPS can take a while to locate a new satellite when you change its global location. I turned ours on the minute the aircraft stopped and it located us as we pulled into our hotel!

How does it work with two lots of maps installed? Do you have to switch from UK to florida maps?

Anybody know of any good POIs (Points of Interest) for Florida maps that can be dowloaded?

e.g. supermarkets, restaurants etc.

I have heard this a few times. Is it a TomTom problem or all Sat Navs? When I took my PDA/Sat Nav to test it it worked as soon as I exit the parking lot, didn't switch it on until ready for leaving. Same in LA, took about 2-3 mins to find its position.

When I start Sat Nav on my PDA it gives me a list of maps intalled to choose from, I have UK, Florida, California and will be adding Las Vegas soon.

DH has just bought a NAVMAN system for when we are doing our balloon deliveries, and I was wondering if we could get US maps for that - anyone know?

DH has changed it so that the woman is American! It's so funny she says "At the traffic circle turn...." instead of island but he says it makes him happy! :lmao:

It could be my GPS reciever is different to yours and yours is better :lmao:
Is yours in built or a seperate unit? mine is seperate (about the size of a zippo lighter).

I have used a TomTom 910 for the past 2 years and it usually gets a signal within a minute of switching on :confused3
I think this all depends on the strength of your GPS receiver and not the TomTom software. :thumbsup2

I have compiled my own POI's (and still adding to them !)
If you PM me with your email address, I will sent you my collection :thumbsup2

Yep, my TomTom 910 never has any problems finding the satellites when moving from country to country - takes 2 minutes max. The stupid cradle annoys me though, mine seems to sink as we drive along! Luckily my new car has SatNav built in so I won't be needing it anymore.

If you have the TomTom "N. America" map it covers all of these locations in one. I was wondering, what would happen if you were driving from Vegas to California on yours, Wayne? Would you need to switch maps half-way through the journey or does it merge the two together? Seems strange.
