I work in a hospital, so I have to call, speak to a supervisor, and answer their nosy questions. It's such a hassle it discourages us all from taking bogus days off.
My boss doesn't even HAVE a smart phone... We try to catapult her into the 21st century but she insists on using a tiny no text phone. And she's 10 years YOUNGER than I am!!
We have a central number we call and let the clerk know who we are and that we are calling off sick or FMLA (out of 10 people on my shift 9 of us have FMLA and the other person is in the process of getting it!).

We are required to call our supervisor and notify her by speaking to her. Texting, emailing, leaving a voice mail, or a message on an answering machine is not a valid option for us. If we are unable to speak directly to our supervisor, we are to call up the chain of command until we find a live human to actually speak to. This goes for if we are running late or going to be out.
If we fail to do so, we will be disciplined according to the policy (and believe me, we have a written step by step, policy for EVERYTHING ).

text and/or email. too many folks do not check their voice mail to make calling a good way and our boss likes having the email to compare to our time sheets each month.
