On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther posted the 95 Theses on the door of the Wittenberg Palace church, marking the start of the Protestant Reformation in Germany.

On October 31, 1938, the day after his ''War of the Worlds'' broadcast had panicked radio listeners, Orson Welles expressed ''deep regret'' but also bewilderment that anyone had thought the simulated Martian invasion was real.

On October 31, 1999, EgyptAir Flight 990 crashed off the Massachusetts coast, killing all 217 people aboard.

On October 31, 2001, a 61-year-old New York hospital worker became the fourth person to die from inhalation anthrax. The source of the anthrax remains unknown, though authorities suspect she came into contact with contaminated mail.

Sorry about going AWOL yesterday, for those folks who read the TIH posts. I was flying to Mason City, IA to give lectures to the family medicine residency program, as a part of our statewide continuing medical education program. As Mason City is about 3 1/2 hours away, I had to go by charter plane -- a 6 seat Piper Cherokee. Small planes make me nervous. As we hit some turbulance, all I could think of was Paul Wellstone, John Denver, Buddy Holly, etc. -- Happy to report that I made it back, however, safe and sound. . .

Deb, I'm very glad you made it back as well. And as always, thank you for this. :)

 Deb & Thank Yer! :)

I still try to listen to a recording of the orginal 'war of the worlds'...each Halloween...It's amazing but sum folks actually committed suicide as the show was being broadcast!...the power of the media was still so comparitively young then, Mr. Wells had no expectation that that nights Mercury Theatre show would be taken so seriously!

Glad yer made it back too!

thou, you need nert have worried...that's a good craft!....and the science was 'on your side' :)

This is being discussed on the History Channel right now. Haunted History of Halloween. Excellent edition, Deb....:D

I didn't realize today is the day Martin Luther posted those theses. I'm still surprised of how brave he was to go against the church like he did.:)

Thanks Deb, and I'm glad you made it safely home.:)

LOL, Jason.:p

Oooo! War of the Worlds. That's reminds me we should watch it tonight.

Glad you made it safely. Like you, I'm not fond of small planes. I missed you yesterday.

Thanks

Thanks, DEB:D :D :D :D .

Glad that you're back safely. I'm not crazy about you flying in those planes either.

Thanks, EROS. Neither is Eric. He did, however, ask me to make sure my LIFE INSURANCE policy was current before I took off

Atleast he cares.;) LOL! That's what my SO tells me everytime I go somewhere in my truck.:p

I missed the history lesson yesterday, Deb. Glad your flight was uneventful.

Very interesting today, thanks :)

DEB, years ago I had to make a 200 mile jump across the jungle in Borneo. Of course, we're talking about a 2-seater, single engine plane taking off and landing on dirt air strips. Soooooooooooo, after take-off I noted that the ONLY thing beneath us for miles was rain forest. I asked the pilot about the "plan" for an emergency landing,............. and he just started to laugh:rolleyes:  .......

I haven't ridden in a small plane since then:D . We occasionally take turbo-props from Chicago to Milwaukee, but they seat 32.

Tell ERIC that you're canceling the life insurance. Forget those 6 seaters!!!!

Thanks Deb.

These are always such interesting tidbits.

I don't like those little planes either.

I flew 2x on a 12 seater from San Juan to Tortola, BVI and back again, with a stop in Virgin Gorda for good measure (dirt strip, surrounded on 3 sides by mountains, last side by ocean) Not my favorite way to travel.
