Total Run Miles - 45.7 miles
Total Run Time - 6:55 hours
Total Strength Time - 2:09 hours
Total Training Time - 9:05 hours

Tuesday

Conditions - 🌧 Light Rain, Wind 12mph to 18mph
Start: Temp+Dew = 59°F + 43°F; FL - 59°F
End: Temp+Dew = 58°F + 41°F; FL - 59°F

Body feeling good and no aches or pains that I can remember. G and I did our 1.1 miles of 30/30. Steph decided to opt out of this one because she thought that G's attitude towards the running was due to her in some way (it wasn't). The easy fix was just to make sure the run was more on G's terms and less on anything else. So when I let her pick and choose, then things went fine. And not having side aches always makes everyone less grumpy. So post run G and I convinced Steph that she has to continue to join us in our afternoon runs.

It tried to rain on me during my run, but it wasn't enough to bother me. As I'm getting closer to the start of the Canova General Phase, I'm moving up my Tuesday/Wednesday running distances from 45 min to closer to 60 min/7 miles. Which means more of a time commitment on those days with the LIIFT4 workouts still occurring immediately afterwards. My pace was slow and my HR was a little higher than expected. No explanation.

Wednesday

Conditions - ☁️ Overcast, Wind 8mph to 13mph
Start: Temp+Dew = 59°F + 57°F; FL - 59°F
End: Temp+Dew = 60°F + 58°F; FL - 59°F

The run felt easy enough. Probably went a bit too fast. I got really lucky with the rain. It was down pouring right up until I walked out the door and restarted a down pour not long after I returned. So chalked this one up as well timed. Nothing stuck out about the run.

The LIIFT4 workout was HIIT Legs again. I can eat up the aerobic running exercises for days (like soccer run, high knees, etc.), but those other types of HIIT especially in plank are just not my forte. Probably means they're good for me. Overall I feel stronger, and do feel like my core is getting stronger as well.

Thursday

Where Wednesday was lucky with the weather, Thursday was not. It was a torrential down pour with lightning which made outdoors running virtually impossible. So I hit up the treadmill. Just set it to 7mph and moved the incline from 2 to 4 as the run progressed.

Friday

Conditions - ⛅ Partly Cloudy, Wind 7mph to 12mph
Start: Temp+Dew = 67°F + 54°F; FL - 67°F
End: Temp+Dew = 67°F + 54°F; FL - 67°F

Run was good overall. Got a new pair of Saucony Ride 14s, so I ran in those. Felt nice to have a new pair of shoes. Body still feeling good overall and no concerns.

Saturday

Conditions - ⛅ Partly Cloudy, Wind 12mph to 16mph
Start: Temp+Dew = 67°F + 57°F; FL - 67°F
End: Temp+Dew = 69°F + 56°F; FL - 67°F

Did the Brat Fest 5k with G which she recapped earlier (link). Afterwards, we did a little more walking around the festival than I wanted to. But we got some brats, ice cream, and then saw the horse show for a little bit. We drove home, and then I stayed in my workout clothes to finish out my workouts. I decided to go out for a nice and slow 7 miles and then do the LIIFT4-chest/tri. It was reasonably warm out by the time I got to run, but not too bad. I just tried to keep the effort lower. Still not slow enough to be in Canova's regeneration pace goal, but good. Afterwards, I got inside and did the LIIFT4 workout. Didn't finally eat lunch until like 1:30pm.

Sunday

Conditions - ⛅ Partly Cloudy, Wind 14mph to 30mph
Start: Temp+Dew = 64°F + 59°F; FL - 64°F
End: Temp+Dew = 67°F + 61°F; FL - 64°F

Just a nice and easy run followed by LIIFT4-Back/Biceps. Nothing really to report. The effort felt easy, and the fitness is in a good place. Next week is the last week before I start doing strides which will then lead into real workouts soon. So this intro phase has served me well thus far.

As a pivot, my mental headspace was not in a good place this week. I've lived a privileged life to this point. My daughter is in second grade. The events of earlier this week really hit me hard. I haven't slept well. I cried more times this week than I probably have in my entire life up to this point combined. I feel like a piece of my soul was taken. This isn't an invitation to talk about what happened, because ultimately I don't want to. Rather just to put it down on paper that mentally this week has been absolutely rough.

2022 Brat Fest 5k w/ G - Race Recap

This was G's second 5k race, and first non-Disney 5k. She still wanted to dress up in matching costumes for this race despite it not being Disney, so we threw together some items to take this race To Infinity and Beyond.

Conditions - ⛅ Partly Cloudy, Wind 9mph to 14mph
Start: Temp+Dew = 60°F + 54°F; FL - 60°F
End: Temp+Dew = 62°F + 55°F; FL - 60°F

G will do the recap for the remainder of the race:

I had a good night's rest before the race. I had a weird dream, but I can't remember it. For breakfast, I had a banana and a Nutella waffle. Because of my side cramps a few training runs ago, I tried to eat these foods a little further from race time. I did have some pretzels in the car.

I was really excited to run the race. We dressed up as Buzz Lightyear and a Pizza Planet Delivery guy. I was wearing a Buzz Lightyear dress we bought from Target, and my dad was wearing a Pizza Planet shirt. He also had on Slinky Dog ears, and two zoom zooms of Jessie and Woody on his shoulders. They were held together on his shirt using magnets.

Before it was our turn to run the 5k, there was a kid's race and 10k start. I saw my friend from school do the kid's race. We met a dog named Luna who was going to do the 5k dog jog also. She was black and grey. My dad and I did some light stretching like we normally do in training, and then we saw mom and she wished us good luck. We lined up after the 10k runners were started. We were around the middle/back of the 5k group of starters.

Once the race started, I feel like we went a little slow. Dad and I decided we wouldn't follow 30/30 strictly, but rather I would just decide when to walk and when to run. Because I might have gotten tired when I was running, the walks that I did helped me get more energy.

During the first mile we were running on some road, and then on gravel, and then we saw a stone arch that looked like the one I saw on my field trip. We then started running on a sidewalk and the path got narrow and wiggly-waggly. Around this point we were starting to run back and forth with some other people doing their paces. We saw an older woman with a young boy who looked like he was about 5 years old. He was having lots of fun. I noticed a girl with cool shoes, and I let her know I liked how shiny they were. Luna the dog passed us around this point in the race, and she seemed like she was having a great time too. The first place 5k runner passed us going the other direction, he finished in 17:00 minutes. He was fast. He had a banana in his hand. We finished the first mile in 13:22 and I was feeling tired, but still had enough energy.

As the race progressed I did more walks, but it was very fun. We crossed a bridge, and a guy and his family yelled, "Go small girl." And so I did. The path was still narrow and there were now 5k runners coming back towards us. So we had to be more picky and choosy about passing others and getting to the side. I was really looking forward to the halfway point and kept asking my dad when it would come up because we talked about how this was an out-back course. When we finally made it to the halfway point they had some funny signs on the side of the path. There was one about "Ketchup" to the person in front of you. And another about "Having enough Mustard" to finish. And one about "relish the moment". They were all jokes about brats. Around this time before we hit Mile 2 is when the first place 10k runner passed us. He was fast. Dad said he would be that fast too, but he wasn't. There was a lady with a great dane and it looked big enough that I could ride it. But I didn't. But if I could, I would have ridden it to the finish because my legs were tired. We finished the second mile in 13:32. I was getting ready for the finish, and didn't think I would be able to do my super boost.

We crossed back over the bridge and were nearing the end of the race. We were surprised that initially two 10k runners passed us, but then there was a huge gap in time before we saw 3rd place. A guy also running the 5k that we had been jockeying back and forth with decided to say hi to us. He said I should be really proud of myself because I was beating him and he used to be able to run 17 min 5ks. Although he's in his 50s now. Every time we would do our run/walk we would gain distance on him. One time he passed us and he said to me, "Are you going to let me beat you?" And he got a little distance in front of us. My dad convinced me that we should do the "hi/bye" game with him that I did with the Cinderella ladies during the Disney 5k. So we sped up and we passed him again, and I said to him "hi/bye". And he laughed. But we didn't get much ahead of him before we walked again. So he was right on my tail for the rest of the third mile. My dad and I kept talking about super boosts and I kept saying that I didn't think I had any more super boosts left. Finally we were closing in on the end of the third mile, and our friend was RIGHT behind us. A spectator yelled out, if we're going to speed up, NOW IS THE TIME. We did the third mile in 14:44.

View attachment 672616

When we hit the third mile, my friend was so close, it was time to break out the super boost. And so I did. I bolted past by everyone, and everyone was like there goes Buzz Lightyear. We were running so so fast and it was hard, but I made it to the finish. It was fun to run the super boost because it felt like I was flying through the remainder of the course. We did the final 0.1 miles in 6:50 min/mile pace, and at one point peaked at 5:30 min/mile pace. I was exhausted.

We finished in 42:30 which is faster than our Disney race around 1:30 hrs. But there weren't any Disney characters to take pictures with, but maybe I should have with Luna the dog.

View attachment 672615

Now if any of you guys are going to run the Brat Fest 5k for the first time I suggest running it with someone you really care about because you'll have so much fun. But at the end of the race I suggest you run it as fast as possible. Like start off slow and then when you zoom past everyone, everyone will go "What, What, What". So trust me the 5k is really fun.

I'm excited to do another 5k in three weeks at the Hot2Trot. Thanks for reading!

This is the dream.

G—you’re a great writer and I really enjoyed your race report. It sounds like you had a lot of fun!

Best race recap ever!

Also best 5K advice ever.

Nicely done Miss G.

Cutest race recap ever. Good job G!!!

Congratulations G!!!!! (And Dad). That race sounds like it was a lot of fun. I wish I was there, I would have loved the brat jokes.

Congratulations to Billy and G for a well completed 5k! Thanks for the recap.

Congrats to G and father for a great 5k! Great race report!

This was seriously the cutest. Congrats to both of you!

This is the dream.

She says thanks to all!

G will do the recap for the remainder of the race:
A most epic race recap. Full of fun little details that remind me of the wisdom of a very old green friend of mine. "Truly wonderful the mind of a child is."
The easy fix was just to make sure the run was more on G's terms and less on anything else. So when I let her pick and choose, then things went fine. In some ways I feel like I transformed as a runner when I learned that it would not destroy my training if I had to train slower than "desired" for a few days. Or a lot of days. Slow training is better than no training. And not being intensely sore after training makes it easier to want to train the next day and so forth. The cumulative effect of that is much better than start intense, stop altogether after a day or two and then resume intense after a few weeks. That's a more difficult cycle to break.

Agreed!

Very true!

This is G's training journal now.

Total Run Miles - 43.4 miles
Total Run Time - 6:36 hours
Total Strength Time - 2:24 hours
Total Training Time - 9:00 hours

Tuesday

Conditions - ⛅ Mostly Cloudy, Wind 18mph to 28mph
Start: Temp+Dew = 79°F + 69°F; FL - 80°F
End: Temp+Dew = 78°F + 68°F; FL - 80°F

The only real warm day of the week at a T+D of 148. Otherwise the humidity dropped and things were much easier. I took it nice and slow and settled into what felt like a nice easy pace. Adjusted for T+D the pace was about 8:45, which feels about right for a 130bpm.

Wednesday

Conditions - ⛅ Partly Cloudy, Wind 8mph to 10mph
Start: Temp+Dew = 71°F + 47°F; FL - 71°F
End: Temp+Dew = 71°F + 47°F; FL - 71°F

G and I did our run first. She chose the school route, so we took it nice and easy. Chatted about the end of the school year. Also talked about how I was going to start doing "super boosts" at the end of some of my workouts if she preferred to join me for those instead of the 30/30s we've been doing.

Best I can remember, my run afterwards was unremarkable.

The LIIFT4 Legs workout after the runs was a lifting + HIIT one. It mostly ate me alive.

Thursday

Conditions - ☀️ Clear, Wind 10mph to 18mph
Start: Temp+Dew = 70°F + 53°F; FL - 70°F
End: Temp+Dew = 71°F + 50°F; FL - 70°F

Legs were still a little sore from the LIIFT4 legs workout. But managed just fine regardless.

Friday

Conditions - ☀️ Clear, Wind 13mph to 19mph
Start: Temp+Dew = 71°F + 41°F; FL - 71°F
End: Temp+Dew = 71°F + 41°F; FL - 71°F

Legs were still a little sore from LIIFT4 Legs, but overall not too bad. G was going to join me for the tail end of the workout and super boosts. But when I got done with my 6 miles of easy running, she had a friend over, so I did the 5 x 15s reps on my own. If my Garmin is to be believed, then I hit a max pace of 2:40 min/mile, but I'm not buying it since it only happened in a single rep. Other than that rep, my max pace was 3:52 min/mile which would mark only the third time I've ever recorded a sub-4 pace on my Garmin that I thought was legit. Garmin had me at 246 steps per minute. I was pretty beat at the end of the last rep, and I made my way back home.

As I got to the house I saw G's friend on his bike riding away, and G putting on her running shoes. She was ready to go. But I was not. So at first I said I didn't have it in me. But the disappointment on her face got me, and I was like alright, we can do 30/30s. But she had her heart set on the 15s/120s super boost workout instead. So against my better judgement, I was in. Alright, we can do that. So I followed up my own 5x15s at Max, with an additional 5x10s at Super Boost with G. We mostly ran side by side, and it looks like we hit a max pace around 5:00-5:20 per the reps. So she was cooking. I told her to pretend our dog Dizzy was chasing after her and we were trying to get away. Legs were pretty tight after this consecutive dose of Max paces.

Saturday

Conditions - ☁️ Overcast, Wind 5mph to 7mph
Start: Temp+Dew = 56°F + 45°F; FL - 56°F
End: Temp+Dew = 58°F + 46°F; FL - 56°F

Legs felt a lot more snappy despite the slower pace. So the 15s Max pace reps were already paying off in a noticeable way with likely decreasing my ground contact time in my cadence. The run felt smooth. Excluding treadmill runs, and runs less than an hour, this was one of my lowest HR runs around this pace area. Only 2017 runs really compare when I was in peak physical shape and running in the cold.

During the beginning of the LIIFT4 chest/tri I was thinking it may be time to invest in heavier dumbbells. By the end of the workout, I was satisfied with the weights I've got. LOL.

Sunday

Conditions - ☁️ Overcast, Wind 8mph to 12mph
Start: Temp+Dew = 61°F + 57°F; FL - 61°F
End: Temp+Dew = 63°F + 58°F; FL - 61°F

Good run. The pace felt smooth. Legs feel good. Did another 5x15s rep set at the end of the workout. This time the much faster than sub-4 pacing was repeated across the intervals. On the five, I hit fastest measured pace of 2:57, 3:02, 2:51, 3:58, and 3:10. So I was really cooking. I feel like this may be the fastest I've ever felt during max speed type reps. I'm in a good place right now. I peaked at 245 spm again.

I'm liking where my body's at coming into the tail end of the introduction phase of the training. Excited for the real paced work to start.

6/6/22-6/12/22
Tues (6/7): 7 miles @ Easy (8:43 min/mile, 127 bpm) & LIIFT4-Shoulders
Wed (6/8): 7 miles @ 80% M Tempo (8:27 min/mile, 131 bpm) + LIIFT4-Legs
Thurs (6/9): 7 miles @ 80% M Tempo (8:27 min/mile, 133 bpm)
Fri (6/10): 6 miles @ Moderate (8:03 min/mile, 136 bpm) + 8x15s at Max on 2-3% grade hill
Sat (6/11): 7 miles @ Easy (8:42 min/mile, 133 bpm) + LIIFT4-Chest/Back
Sun (6/12): 7 miles @ Moderate (8:00 min/mile, 137 bpm) + LIIFT4-Legs

Total Run Miles - 42.5 miles
Total Run Time - 6:04 hours
Total Strength Time - 2:00 hours
Total Training Time - 8:04 hours

Tuesday

Conditions - ⛅ Partly Cloudy, Wind 5mph to 6mph
Start: Temp+Dew = 61°F + 56°F; FL - 61°F
End: Temp+Dew = 63°F + 58°F; FL - 61°F

Tuesday's run was spectacular. The pace was good. The HR was low. The T+D was creeping up, but not bad. All was good. Per the stats, I was starting to edge into HRvPace areas that I've never been in before. Including peak fitness in Winter 2017.

Wednesday

Conditions - ☁️ Overcast, Wind 7mph to 11mph
Start: Temp+Dew = 58°F + 56°F; FL - 58°F
End: Temp+Dew = 59°F + 56°F; FL - 58°F

Legs were feeling snappy and I just let the pace be what it wanted to be. Which means it was drifting a little quicker than I should be going. That ended up being the theme of the whole week. I felt fine going faster, but I really should have been holding back more.

We watched Obi-wan and the first episode of Ms. Marvel. G has decided after the first episode that she wants to do Ms. Marvel for Halloween/Princess. So now comes all the costume planning specific to getting her Kamala Khan outfit ready. We plan to make a giant foam fist for her. So that's goal #1. Then we'll narrow down on the Ms. Marvel costume itself, and then figure out what I'm wearing.

Thursday

Conditions - ⛅ Partly Cloudy, Wind 7mph to 10mph
Start: Temp+Dew = 56°F + 50°F; FL - 56°F
End: Temp+Dew = 61°F + 52°F; FL - 56°F

I tried holding back more and ended up at pretty much the exact same pace. It was G's last day of 2nd grade. She's bummed to say goodbye to her friends for the summer. But I guarantee the summer will be over before she knows it.

Friday

Conditions - 🌧 Drizzle, Wind 8mph to 12mph
Start: Temp+Dew = 66°F + 56°F; FL - 66°F
End: Temp+Dew = 68°F + 59°F; FL - 66°F

I tried to hold back, but it just didn't work again as I got in a groove and held it. I've got to force the issue more. Thankfully (or maybe not thankfully) some really warm weather is returning to WI again and it's going to do the forcing for me. I did get 6 miles at the "I shouldn't be going this fast pace" and then aimed to do some uphill max speed reps. I chose a hill that was more gentle than the one I plan on using in a few weeks. The plan was to do reps of 15s at max speed on this 2-3% grade hill until I felt like the quality was diminishing. I ended up with 8 reps on the uphill at 6:12 (was measuring 15s worth of running), 5:05, 4:51, 4:55, 4:58 (was starting to think the quality may be slipping and aimed for "one more"), 4:49 (alright maybe I'm good again), 4:55 (alright just one more), and 4:31 (saved best for last). The Garmin claimed I was hitting max pace of 2:30-3:30 min/mile. But I'm not buying it for much. I think it's just struggling with the very short durations because I doubt I'm actually going that fast. Regardless, that last rep tapped me out and I made my way back home. I'll take a 4:31 min/mile rep uphill though.

Later that evening I was trying to corral Dizzy and put my left knee in an awkward position. There's a little bit of soreness at the top back of my calf. I've had something similar before and more often than not it comes from running too hard uphill. So I'll keep an eye on it.

Saturday

Conditions - ☁️ Overcast, Wind 9mph to 12mph
Start: Temp+Dew = 65°F + 61°F; FL - 65°F
End: Temp+Dew = 66°F + 62°F; FL - 65°F

Saturday was good. The HR is up 6 bpm from Tuesday at the same pace despite the weather not being all that different. So I'm seeing a bit of a bounce backwards. This isn't terribly unsurprising because I ran a little too fast most of the week, but also because my training load data shows what I was doing six weeks ago is roughly equal to what I've been doing recently. So I'm flatening out. That'll change once training actually begins in two weeks. Behind the left knee was stiff and noticeable but had little to no effect on the running itself.

LIIFT4 moved into the last two weeks which marks a shift in workouts. Chest/Back was combined into a single workout.

That evening we watched one of the greatest movies ever made - Short Circuit.

short-circuit-robot.gif

G agrees it's one of the best movies ever made. She is waiting in anticipation to see the sequel.

Sunday

Conditions - ☁️ Overcast, Wind 9mph to 12mph
Start: Temp+Dew = 62°F + 58°F; FL - 62°F
End: Temp+Dew = 63°F + 59°F; FL - 62°F

Sunday was good, but the HR continues to climb relative to the pace. Behind the left knee was stiff and noticeable but had little to no effect on the running itself. The LIIFT4 workout was legs, and because of how the calf felt I decided to not do the uphill max speed sprints. This was a good decision because the Legs workout was brutal enough on its own.

Overall the week was good. I think I ran too fast on most of the days. Too much soon to be LR pace and Moderate pace, and not enough of truly easy pace. I hope to better remedy that this week. Especially since we're going to see a jump in temps. With that being said, despite the upwards movement of the HR, I felt generally pretty good during most of the runs. G and I have her 3rd 5k this upcoming weekend at Hot2Trot.

OMG I used to show the "NO DISASSEMBLE" clip in class for a discussion on Turing Tests and AI. Always got a big laugh. Johnny is the best actor in this film.
