To buy or not to buy...

I keep going back and forth with this question.

I've been to Disney at least yearly since they opened. ( I remember when DVC first came out and points were about $50.00 a point AND you got a 10 year annual pass..) Yet, I still don't own.

My children are older now. DD is 11 and DS is 16 and I'd pretty much decided against buying. However, I spent the first week of December at the Boardwalk with my sister ( who is an owner ) and had a fabulous time. I'd like to make it a tradition and go every year.

I'd only need about 50 points so I'd buy resale. The points are reasonable and the maintenance on that small number is also minimal. But, would I be better off just renting the points and getting them transferred to my sisters account? With the current point rental chart I'm only spending about $90.00 a night to rent. ( We go Mon-Fri and drive from SC ) I'd love opinions on this. Thanks.

Over a period of time, the purchase of a resale would be more cost effective.

i made the same kind of decision to buy in small.

i'm happier to have control of the reservation and be able to contact MS directly.

it is typically a little cheaper also - i'm estimating $7ish per point rather than $10+ for renting. (and transfers can be tough with the one-per-year limitation.)

i'd vote to buy in, but if the $5000ish is too much of a stretch up front, renting will probably work out fine...

1. I don't want to rely on rentals every year.

2. If I owe the points, I can waitlist, change resorts, cancel, change dates vs. renting is pretty much final.

3. It will be harder to get points transfers--you are only allowed 1 in or out each year---I think you will only find people with last minute points that they can't use willing to do tranfers--esp. for little amounts like 50 points.

4. 50 points is such a small amount and you have such flex with bank/borrow--5 nights sun-thus in studio, or skip a year or two and get bigger place/longer stays.
