So I've been considering adding my mother to my DVC contracts; I own one resale and purchased 25 direct points last year for the benefits. Now I'm concerned that if I change the contract to include both of us as members, I will lose my grandfathered status with the 25 points and no longer qualify for member benefits.

I can't find a direct answer to this in any of my membership paperwork, except that it looks like changing ownership creates a new deed and that to me sounds like I will no longer qualify for membership benefits with my 25 point contract. Wondering if anyone has any information about this, or a better understanding of adding owners to existing contracts? Thoughts?

My understanding is that it won't change your status but I would check with DVC administration first.

Call member services, but know there is a legal fee to add anyone. I know this since I want to add my kids when they turn 18 and was told to wait until all kids are 18 or I would be paying the legal fee multiple times. I have along way to go since my kids are young but want to make sure they can go without me when they are older.

I have done this twice, one for each contract we own, to add our adult daughter so she could get her own membership card.

The process is to transfer your contract from current owners to current owners plus mother.

Your first stop is Member Administration to make a request to add a person to the deed. As long as you have them on the line you should confirm that you will retain your current member status after the transfer is complete.

The main cost was filing the Quit Claim Deed and DVC ROFR with the Orange County Register of Deeds (or Comptroller, I forget which one), ~$50 plus the cost of creating the deed. I used an internet site to generate the Quit Claim deed the first time ($80) and just altered the property description for the second one. Since we owned the contract we decided to skip the title search. It takes about three months with mailing and processing.
