Tips for using vellum

Hi gang - Had a question re: vellum. I bought these really cool travel vellum quotes at Michael's (don't think I'll buy again as they were expensive & I think I can just print them on my printer), and I'm not sure what to use for adhesive. Here is what I've purchased so far:

Xyron repositionable tape - Yikes! I bought this kit at Michael's which I just returned as I had a heck of a time with the repositionable tape, plus I really don't think I'll use the x machine. The tape was hard to work with, plus it did show through the vellum a bit. I used it as patiently as I could, but it drove me nuts.

Scotch vellum tape - I also returned this as my friend said she had trouble with this, but I am willing to try if you all recommend it.

I visited 2peas for the first time (Wow! Those layouts are amazing!) & people over there seem to recommend Scotch vellum tape or CM Clear Photo Splits. What do you all use? Anyone use Scotch tape, or CM splits yet? Any other brands that I should look for?

Also, do any of you print on your own vellum? I am having a hard time finding single sheets of vellum (Michael's sells books with patterned vellum, but they seem expensive & the patterns are kind of fancy). I am going to go to one of my local LSS and see if they have any - is there any brand that you recommend? I live on my computer (do lots of journalling, print photos, etc...) so I am eager to try it out. Also, is vellum just to be used for fancy pages such as weddings, babies, etc... or do you all use it with any layout?

Sorry for all of the questions, but you ladies know your stuff and I would welcome any vellum tips that you may have.

Have a great night, Tiger :earsgirl:

I've used brads to attach vellum. When I have used tape, I've covered it up with something- like buttons or a charm. I have also made a frame out of card stock to frame the vellum

As far as printing of vellum- go for it. I did find single sheets of vellum at Micheals but I bought a small pack. Just load it in your printer like regular paper. Even if it has a subtle design on the vellum it works really good.

Have FUN with your vellum :Pinkbounc

I have always bought my vellum in single-sheets at my LSS. Of course it is a little more expensive than regular card-stock, but its fun to use. I don't just save mine for "fancy" layouts either. Vellum looks cool when used with pictures of snow... gives your layout an "icy" feel to it!

Hi!! I use Scotch vellum tape, I love it!! It does show through when used over dark paper, though. I also put a button, brad, eyelet, diecut over the tape spot so you can't see it. :teeth:

I print on vellum all the time to journal, create titles, etc. I also print on transparencies. I get vellum by the sheet at AC Moore. They are usually out of white, so when they have it I stock up!! My LOs are on two peas, I am disneyfreakjackie ::MickeyMo over there, too!!

HAVE FUN!

I use vellum on everything...I do all of my Journaling on them. I'll either tack it down with brads or eyelets (brads only when I mount the vellum on another peice of cardstock under it...so you don't see the prong on the back) or I'll use herme fix dots. I love vellum...it's so versital...and dosn't take away from your photos.

I use so much of it I like buying it in the "value" packs. But I have seen individual sheets at Michaels. Our Michaels has it in a couple places...with the other 8.5"X11" cardstock and with the "card making" supplies.

Another neat idea to adhere vellum is to "stitch" or sew it to your page. It's really easier than it sounds and you can just do the corners even and not go all the way around. I mostly use eyelets and brads for mine. I love the vellum books you are talking about. I have them in travel/vacation, girls, and the sports one too.

I use the vellum scotch tape as well. (and all the other ideas suggested here as well). :) I have also used a glue stick very lightly on the back of the vellum and that seems to work pretty well too. maggie

ps: when you print on vellum from your computer, just make sure you let it dry before putting on your layout or it will smudge

pps: I LOVE my little x (the xyron 150) it totally rocks. You can run all kinds of things through it, ribbon, quickutz letters, shapes, pretty much anything you want to stick in your book. And just use one of those art erasers to get rid of the little bit of goo left after you peel the stuff off...

I mostly use brads and eyelets to attach vellum. I just recently bought vellum tape and tried it. The trick is to attch the tape to the paper you are mounting the vellum on, not the vellum. And you do have to rub over it a lot before removing the backing. It worked well for me after I learned those two things.

I print on vellum all the time with my ink jet printer. There is usually a rougher side and slicker side, so make sure you print on the rougher side and do let it dry, like someone said.

I bought vellum quotes at JoAnn's and was disapointed to discover it had the same 10 quotes over and over. Maybe we should have a swap of our extra vellum quotes!

I love using Vellum! I have tried all of the tapes and regular glues, but the thing that has worked the best for me is Scrappers Spray for Vellum by Creative Imaginations. You lightly spray it on the back of your vellum and place it on your page and it doesn't show through at all!!! You can even reposition it a few times if necessary and it still sticks! It is wonderful! I haven't had much luck finding vellum at Michael's either, but my LSS has a fairly good selection of it in a lot of really nice colors.

I too love Vellum! I put it on my page several ways. I have the scotch tape and it worked great sometimes for me and sometimes not. I think maybe it was the dark page I was adhering it too.
I use eyelets and brads. Also another trick is to cut the vellum larger and then adhere it with the adhesive in the corners, cover it with either a sticker or a photo.

As for the mini x sticker maker I love it! But I have found that the repositional tape doesn't seem to be holding down my heavier weighted paper.

Also it a takes some time getting use to it. You really have to RUB it hard and sometimes go around the letters or the small pieces with something. I ususally will rub in on the edge of the table several times.

Minnie&Mickey Never heard of that spray. Is it messy? You know spray all over the place? Does it smell really bad? (I get headaches from a lot of that stuff) Do you have to leave your scrapping area to use it? I have used other spray adhesive for other crafts and have to go out side and spray it in a box.

I once did a swap on another board where we all order a LOARGE quntity of velum in one color from a site (had it all shipped to one girls site) and she divi'd it up and mailed everyone x # of sheets of each color... I twas awesome - that was over a year ago and I am just starting to get low on it!

REGULAR vellum - non colored I got at staples near the photo paper!

I have sewed it, xyroned it, used glue dots then put bottons over it, eyelets, and my favorite is brads!

also when printing make sure you set your printer settings to transperancy to limit smudging.

Things to do with Vellum:
1. Place over patterned paper to mute the design.

2. Create embellishments, such as flowers.

3. Journal boxes and titles.

4. Highlight portions of a picture.

5. Create soft borders.

6. Layer for deepening color blocks.

7. Scan and print photos on vellum for an unusual effect.

8. Dry emboss.

9. Tear and layer to create "snow", "ocean" or "clouds"

10. Create envelopes, windows, and tags.

11. Overstamp with Brilliance inks (white on white vellum for example) to
create your own patterned vellum (dry overnight rather than heat setting
the ink.)

***My favorite***
When you have those not so perfect pictures lay the vellum over - trace a line around the part of the picture you really want to see and cut the sqaure out - then lay the vellum over the layout -

Thanks for posting this topic Tiger! I haven't used it yet - I'm still working on my swap stuff, not pages. However, I did buy a package at Wal-Mart last week. It was 10 sheets (12x12) of translucent vellum for $3.97. I'm anxious to use it!

Something I saw on DIY network's scrapping show in addition to the usual brads, eyelets & sewing was to attach with ribbon. They did it 3 ways - one was kind of free floating (only attached at the top) & another was more like sewing with a very large running stitch. For the third one they punched/poked 2 holes in each corner & ran the ribbon through so it was diagonal in each corner.

There are some great ideas here! I like the idea of framing it.

I haven't read any of the replies, but I attach vellum with either brads or eyelets. I also recently started using the clear photo corners.

The only vellum I use for printing is by CTMH. I have never had a problem with smearing or smudges and it dries instantly... and I don't have to change any printer settings. So far, though, I have only used their "plain" vellum.

It isn't messy at all. It is in an aerosol can, and I just hold the vellum over my trash can and lightly spray it...like a two second spray. As far as it having an odor, I just went and sprayed a little bit to see if it smelled before answering this question, and it does have an odor, but you are spraying such a small amount and for such a short time, that I don't think it will bother you. I don't leave my scrapping area to spray it, I don't even leave my chair. I love this stuff!

Thanks so much! You all gave some fab ideas for adhesion, as well as usage of vellum. I can't use the spray due to allergies/asthma, so I guess tapes or brads/eyelets are the answer. I must admit, I am still a bit scared of using brads/eyelets as I watched my friend banging the heck out of her book last week (would that have been the brads or eyelets? I'm still not sure!) and that kinda scares me. I'm not as worried about the safety issue as they are coated, right? Since I'm still experimenting, I'm going to probably try the Scotch vellum tape as well as CM stuff for vellum. We seem to have limited selection around here for vellum, but I am going to check out Walmart, as well as LSS, and believe it or not, our grocery superstore had some the other day as well - one of the major brand names and much cheaper than Michael's!

I'll let you know how it turns out. Now back to my baby who is climbing up my scrap desk to get to our Disney album - is 20 months old too young to learn how to scrap? LOL!!!

Just wanted to add...I have tryed the CM clear photo splits with a medium weight vellum...and it sucked. You could sooo see the adhesive. I won't use it again. I just say that because you mentioned trying the CM stuff for vellum. I use to love the CM photo splits..but won't order them anymore...now that there clear....and that's comming from a CMC. I love just about all of there products...but this is one that I can simpley do without. The photo tape...from CM...now I like that..and have used it on occasions on the vellum, mostly in areas that are covered or hidden by something else. I really havent' found any adhesive that you can't see through vellum to some degree. That spray may be an idea.

maggie - What a gorgeous layout? What did you use to adhere your vellum to the page? Two peas is an amazing site, but it sure makes me feel inadequate - the layouts are incredible!

scrapperjill - Thanks for the info on the photo splits - I guess it'll have to be the Scotch Vellum Tape as that's all that anyone else has mentioned, besides the spray which I can't use.

Thanks again, Tiger

hey tiger, I just used the vellum scotch tape on it. and a glue stick. :) maggie
