We're getting ready for a road trip with our DD 2.75 and DS 7 months to visit family in Canada. The drive is 13 hours without stops, although we do have some lunch/dinner stops planned along the way to see some friends. Do you have any suggestions on how to make this a sane trip? Is that possible?? :) Thanks!!

Do you have a portable DVD player?

Pack some kids music.

Wrap up some little gifts and hand them out along the way. They could be treats (fruit snacks, fish crackers, little cookies, etc) or a new toy (mini magna doddle, kalidascope, glow necklace (night), etc).

Take breaks for the little ones to run around (baby can stretch out on blanket). Bubbles or ball to play with during breaks.

Have your daughters favorite blanket/stuffed toy for naps.

Have a great trip.

You're going to get a lot of DVD player suggestions.

Fortunately for us, my kids will sleep in the car. Mostly what I do is make sure they are in very comfy clothes, have a couple of new books and a couple of favorites, play 'their' music, and take their blankies and a favorite stuffed friend. Stopping to see friends & family also helps, because the kids are excited to get to the next place (and don't fuss as much about leaving if I say "but we're going to see Nana now!")

Thank you for the tips! We do have a DVD player. Thanks for the reminder about comfy clothes...hopefully they will want to sleep more! I like the gift idea, and my DD would love bubbles and a ball for the pitstops. Thanks again!

I second the presents. - We drive about 7 hours to my Dad's, and DS always looks forward to them. We usually dole them out at certain mile markers.

We also like books/storytellers on CD. - Especially if anyone feels carsick watching the DVD player for too long, the audio stories let them look out the window. Big Ryan's Tall Tales are DS's favorite.

Have a great trip :)

Taking a portable potty helps with dealing with gross restrooms, or no restrooms at all. A little purel and you're back on your way. Have fun. I live in Canada, although I doubt you're coming our way as we're days and days and days from PA. Canada is so beautiful and you'll love it wherever you go.
