Tips for one night car rental?

I am looking to rent a car for one night, not in Orlando but here in WI, so i can drive down to Chicago...My car is having issues and I don't want to risk taking it that far..I've never rented a car before so I'm looking for any advice on car rentals..I have debit cards only and only carry liability insurance on my current car..looking to rent a car probably in the next week or so..thanks so much!

One bit of advice, don't buy gas from the rental car agency unless you know you are going to return the car completely empty (as in the gas gauge is on or below the 'E').
