Hi,

One of my 12 yr old boys skin seems to have that oily sheen on his face all the time. No acne yet. It doesn't really seems to bother him, but I'm sure it will at some point.

what should he be using on his face? and what shouldn't he be doing? Also, when he does start to get pimples, what should he use? Is Clearasol still the recommended product? It's been a long time since I've dealt with pimples.;)

TIA,

Sandy

My derm recommended Panoxyl wash to my 13 yr old niece ( i use it too) it works better than clearisil..sorry forgot to add you can find it in the same aisle at the drugstore as clearisil

Well if there are no pimples or black heads etc. I would recommend washing with something gentle like SpectroJel and then using some sort of mild astringent maybe??

When I was a teen I had very oily skin. I always used SeaBreeze. It's inexpensive (@$6 for a bottle that will last about a month) and good for clearing away the excess oil and the almost invisible film of dirt that seems to cling to it. I'd just put some on a tissue and wipe it over my whole face at bed time. It's also good at keeping away pimples and blackheads. I'm always told what good skin I have and this is all I use (seriously, I don't use anything else, no makeup no moisturizer). My skin is no where near as oily now but I still use it two or three times a week to help keep my skin clean. I'm alway's shocked at all the dirt that comes off my face even though I work in an office. Seabreeze is getting harder to find at some stores but CVS still carriers it in the skin care section. A close alternative is the clean n clear but it doesn't work as well.

I think the plain old Noxema in the big blue tubs is the best stuff ever. I would have him wash his face with that morning and night. Then an astringent after he washes (like SeaBreeze) should do the trick.

My 13 year old starting having acne when he was 10. His dermatologist recommended CeraVe wash (sensitive skin formula). You can get it at Walgreen's, CVS, etc.

I second SeaBreeze. My two DD 13 and 15 use it now and they love it. Both have good skin, not oily, a few pimples here and there, but they use this cleaner when they have a sudden breakout. HTH!

My DD12 uses Avon Clear Skin. When she uses it regularly it works great.

Greater amounts of oil production of the skin is normal for adolescents, especially boys. It's related to the increased amount of testosterone production. There's nothing you can do to "turn off" the excess oil production. Sometimes, "soaking up" the oil can lead to increased oil production because the skin thinks something is taking away the protective nature of what oil does for us. Everyone's skin is different. If you're a person using Seabreeze with no adverse reactions, good for you. It's basically using a perfumed alcohol on your face. Alcohol cuts any grease.

I'd be more concerned about the increased oil leading to clogged pores, blackheads and the beginnings of acne. Start him on a gentle cleanser, some of the ones mentioned above should be fine if recommended by a derm. If he looks like he's starting to have clogged pores caused by the oil and skin not sloghing off on it's own, try a gentle scrub or a clay mask 1-2 times a week.

Take a shower?

Oh No! The last thing I want to do is encouraged him to take 4 showers a day. I'm always yelling at one of the other kids, because he takes to many showers!

1 shower a day should be enough, unless of course it's after a soccer game/really dirty activity!
