Tips - cash or on your cc?

We always pay all tips in cash -- at Disney and everywhere else. I like the waiter having the money immediately. My daughter was a waiter for 4 years and this was what she preferred.

Which is illegal. I certainly don't want to help someone break the law.

I agree completely. Non tipped employees have to pay taxes on all their income, servers/tipped employees should too. But if they don't claim them, that income that they count on now is not included in calculation for things such as unemployment & social security.

:thumbsup2

I know servers tend to like cash because they can get away with not claming all their tips. They can't hide how much they got with CC tips.

Plus, they pay taxes on the tips that people don't leave. It is assumed that they are tipped a certain percentage all of the food and drinks that they serve. Believe me, just reading these boards, I know that people don't always tip appropriately. People that say, well the service wasn't good enough. Well, your waiter pays taxes on the bill you ran up and the tip you were supposed to leave.

I have a daughter, who was a server while she attended college. I have heard far too many stories of customers with huge bills that barely tipped - bills of over a $100, with a $5.00 tip.

This is not true. It is expected that you will get at least 8% of your sales in tips. If the server is keeping records of their tips on a daily basis and can show that she did not get that 8% (unlikely) then she can ignore the allocated tip amount and use the actual number. Servers are never expected to pay taxes on tips they did not actually take home.

I manage a small brewpub & not a single one of my bartenders gets less than 8% in tips JUST FROM CREDIT CARDS. Not even including their cash tips or excluding the sales from non-tipped items such as off-sale beer & merchandise.

Do you waiters also tip out other coworkers? I am glad that in California people tip so well.

Well that sucks.....but I'll continue to leave a tip on the cc when I use one to pay. There have been times I have left cash at the table and the server adds a tip anyway :scared1: when I've tried to dispute my bank says I have to go back to the restaurant to dispute with them (I use a check card for most dining out purchases) and that never works so I simply leave the tip on the card.

Which is illegal. I certainly don't want to help someone break the law.
well, it didn't take long for the 'moral police' to show up, did it?

I tip in cash because I don't want the server to eat the cc fee. Their taxes are THEIR business.

If I am leaving a cash tip on a bill I'm paying with my card, I always write "cash" on the tip line. That way there is no room for "accidental" fill-ins...

Is there something wrong or unethical about what I said?

Well, if you really want to look at it that way, whether they eat the CC fee is THEIR BUSINESS as well.

I don't tip in cash because I don't want some scumbag to steal the tip I leave for the server, and also so I have a record of it. I agree, whether a server pays taxes are his/her business, but there's nothing wrong with doing my part to keep people honest. I'm paying for part of the server's salary; he/she needs to pay taxes on it.

And, not every server in every restaurant pays the CC fee on tips - in fact, most don't. It varies by restaurant and state. But if it'll make you feel better, I'll make sure to add an additional 1.5% to my tips to cover that fee from now on.

I always tip in cash. I hand the tip directly to the server. Problem solved:) We had a few problems when we had our credit card added to our KTTW. Once we ordered an appetizer that wasn't covered under our dining plan and we wanted to pay cash for it. The server took that as an additional tip and charged our room for the appetizer. Guest services refunded it back to our room after I called them.

We bank at Chase and there are Chase ATM's at the resort so we just make sure to take enough out for tips that day.

We are using Deluxe Dinning for our upcoming trip so our tip budget will be very large. We use our Disney Visa Reward Card to pay our tips and when that is used up,, we use our room key tied to a credit card. I only take $20.00 in cash to the parks and I usually come home with it.

When we travel to WDW. We bring cash for tipping. Since we are on the dining plan, we dont want to charge just the tip.

If we're on the dining plan, I leave cash for the tip. This trip we are offsite and paying all meals OOP so I'll add the tip to the CC charge.

Cash always (and this goes for nail salons, spas, etc. as well.) I have been told that some places the server loses the credit card fee if the tip is put on the card.

Room charge. I understand that many servers don't get the money up front from cc. That's not my problem. I'm still tipping out the expected 18-20%, so I'm going to do it the easiest way for me.

Is this just a 'feeling', or did you make it up, or what?

It is the option of the restaurant to either "pool" tips or to have servers tip out from their individual tips. I have worked at multiple restaurants, and one of my main questions was whether they pooled tips or not. I personally will not work at a restaurant that pools tips because I feel that supports weak servers. I am a strong server and prefer to earn my own money (and keep most of it :) )

Excuse me?? Why was what I said a qualification for the "morality police"? Did you even read what you quoted?? :confused3

I've done that and they've told the manager we didn't leave a cash tip, the MANAGER then wrote the tip in and gave it to the server. I knew about that one because went and spoke with the manager. The manager didn't act like he believed me but he gave me a $5 gift card to "make up for it". :confused3

This is how I feel, I will do it the easiest way for me. I worked at a restaurant and all tipped personnel were cashed out at the end of their shift, that included tips.

ETA I am not only talking about dining at WDW or DLR, I'm talking about tipping servers wherever we dine out. :) I do the same with hairdressers, nail techs or any other tipped service.

I would have disputed the CC charge and filed a complaint. What the Manager did was illegal and considered theft:furious: We also tip in cash however we write on table in tip slot and take a picture of it with our phone and tip :wave2:
