Tipping ?

Since we always pay a delivery fee, we do not tip. Never have.
However, the guy that just came to pump the septic tank had to dig a hole to get to the tank and then the job of pumping it, in the rain, well he got $50!! Not a job I, nor my husband would ever want!!!

Was he a plumber? That's his job. $50 is crazy.

There's a lot of jobs I don't want, but I don't feel I have to tip the people who do them unless it's understood to be part of the deal, such as with waiters, cabdrivers and hairdressers.

It's nice to offer a bottle of water of soda.

I would never give a cash tip to a delivery; you PAID for this SERVICE

If they go above and beyond, a note of thanks to their employer is a great way to show appreciation.

Not his job. His job is to pump the septic. Your job as the home owner is to provide access to the septic to be pumped. $50 is a steal. Usually there would be an excavation fee if the septic needed to be unburied.

I wouldn't say it's mandatory... but I also know that when you pay for delivery/install especially at major chain stores, the money isn't going to the delivery people. If I'm too lazy to do something myself in the 100 degree florida weather I'm not a cheapskate and I make sure to take care of the guys busting their behinds, but I guess if $10 is going to make or break you it may be a different story

I remember back in the day working in a restaurant that charged $2 for delivery that went back to the restaurant not the driver and people would not tip the driver because of this.

And that is why when you order your pizza, Dominoes has a notice that the delivery charge is not a tip.

You are correct, as we found out. The last company that pumped the tank (over 5 years ago) dug and did not charge extra. We were unaware we were supposed to dig it up. The company that did it this time will only dig 15-18 inches. It was about 24 inches if not more deep and was 24 inches across. My husband did help him dig and my husband took care of filling the hole back in. He just felt bad for the guy pumping it (not a plumber, just a septic service pump guy) because it was muddy and raining!! Not a pretty day to dig and pump, especially since it was rainy, warm and humid...ugh!!

Just an update here: Washer was delivered this morning right on time. They even called a half hour before they got here to make sure I was home! Took them about 45 minutes to take out my old washer, bring in the new one, install it, make it level (this is a challenge in a 150 year old house!) and run a test on it. They even put down cardboard where they brought in the new washer on the floors! This was absolutely not necessary as I have subflooring down where they walked, but they insisted on putting the cardboard down. Bottles of water were offered but declined. Great service! No tip given as was the consensus of the group.

In my neck of the woods, furniture and appliance delivery people are definitely among the list of people for whom a tip is understood to be part of the deal.

I got a new washer last month. I tipped the 2 guys, $5 each. And a cold drink! It was hot and the old machine weighed a ton and had to go up stairs.

If they do a good job, I'd tip each of the delivery people $10-$20. You don't have to, but I figure it's a nice thing to do if someone's done a really good job. One of my family members used to work in a similar job where tipping wasn't really expected, but it was always a nice surprise/bonus when someone would tip.
