Tipping on Luggage? Do You Double Tip?

The general rule is that you tip at the end of the service. For luggage when it arrives at your room upon check-in and when you get it delivered to your car, shuttle or cab upon check-out. The norm is $1 for each bag, $2 for large or heavy bags.

If I am changing resorts I will tip $2 per bag when they pick up my luggage from my room and $2 per bag when it is delivered at my room in the new resort.

My experience is that bell services and valet pool tips within each resort. So not tipping the person who collects your bags and puts them into storage or takes your car to the valet lot does not leave them with no tips.

JimC, my experience at VWL last week did not give me the impression that the tips are pooled. long story......

This is a very interesting thread; glad it was started.

At Disney, I had always tipped the person who brought our bags to the room, but not the person who took them out of the car, especially since we travel light - typically two carry-ons and maybe two bags of groceries, no checked luggage.

Then I wasn't sure if we weren't a couple of rubes after our last trip when...

We lifted our two carry-ons and groceries out of the trunk and handed them to the valet, who put them on a cart and handed us a tag. We said thanks, and got about three steps when he said - in a loud, almost aggressive voice - "Will there be anything else today, sir?" As in, Hey, did you forget something over here? Like a tip?

First off, I'm always the one who handles tipping, so my husband sort of looked at him like he had three heads, said, "No, thank you, all set," and walked away. Once inside, DH asked me if we should have tipped him. For what, you know?

I always thought I had the tipping thing down, but after that, I wasn't sure. Good to know I'm doing okay.

Am I the only one who gets offended by the "hints" at tipping? I mean...they may get plenty of hicks who have no clue about tipping at all....but the general ettiquette is to tip at the end of service and better for good service. Anyone who hints that they want a tip from me is getting a lower tip than they would have otherwise....if any tip at all (particularly those who haven't earned a tip). I just find it rude. Why would I tip someone for being rude?

Don't get me wrong...i use common sense and tip well when its warranted. But I once used a gift card at a restaurant and had the waiter circle (in red ink no less) the total before subtracting the gift card and write a note basically saying "I should be tipped on this amount". I knew that already, of course, but being highly offended I tipped quite low. Too bad because he would have received a very nice tip from us otherwise.

On the other side of things...I once accidentally poked a BWV valet in the eye as he was helping us inload our luggage. He helped us several more times on that trip and I tipped him very well each time. Really its a wonder he didn't try to run away every time he saw us...I poked him hard, fingernail and all...I felt so awful and embarrassed!

Thre are several ways to even out tips. I was under the impression that they did pool tips but if they don't, you can bet they have another way to even them out. In the long run, a rotational system will work just as well with the exception that the better people will get rewarded slightly more. But in no way is Disney expecting you to tip both ways with valet or bell staff and they are not planning on a tip at all for housekeeping. They will reward their employees with these guidelines in mind.

I have asked the valet taking my car at a number of WDW resorts if they pool tips. Every time I have asked, the answer has been "no".

Whatever amount I choose to tip for valet services I simply split between the valet that takes it and the one that brings it back.
