I have heard that the general rule of thumb for mousekeeping (to be tipped) is $1 per person per day plus $1...so for a total of 4 people in a room it would be $5 per day, is this a rule of thumb at value resorts? Just wanting to get my envelopes ready, I don't want to look stingy.
Thanks

This is a very hote topic on the DIS - many do not belive in tipping at all, while many of us do.

No matter the resort, I think $5 a day is fine unless it is a large family with a lot to clean up. We are two, and very neat so $5 (and a little gift during the holidays :) feels right. Even when we were 4 that's what we left in a cute envelope - which we prepared ahead. Makes it so much easier :) We always wrote a personal note of thanks too. :)

Have fun!!!

P,S, At a deluxe we also leave an envelope for evening turn down service. :)

We tipped $3/day (we had 3 people) and had excellent mousekeeping (Pop, February 2008)

We stayed at Pop last year with 3 of us in the room and left $1.00 pp/day. The last day we left a little more but I felt bad that we had left the room a little more messy than it had been duirng the week.

Without any comment on the whole tipping "issue", the housekeepers at the values do just as much work as the housekeepers at the deluxes so the tips should be the same, if you so choose to tip. It doesn't matter if the sheets have a higher thread count or whatever, making a bed is making a bed.

we are a very organized and neat family two adults and two toddlers (i swear my dh is ocd!). we usually leave $5.00 per day. i am a big believer in tipping as i waitressed my way through college :) and the service industry is WAY underrated!

I am certainly not trying to start anything...I just wanted to know. I agree that Mousekeepers probably work equally as hard at each resort. Thanks for all of your feed back!

i tip $5 a day no matter if there is just me or 3 or 4 of us. I think $5 per room is fine. i too create cute envelopes before i leave home and love putting them on the vanity each morning. some mornings mouse keeping doesn't take it though but i still keep on leaving it. :laundy:

We stayed at GF last October. There were the 3 of us and we are very neat, tidy people also. We left a tip of $3 when we left in the morning and also when we were back in the afternoon before turn down service we left $3 then also. Once we were there when they came in the afternoon and hadn't been there in the morning. We thought they forgot us. They asked us if we wanted turn down service. We told them that it wasn't necessary and they did it anyways. Since we tipped I think they did it. If we didn't tip....who knows.....maybe we wouldn't have gotten it??? :confused3 When we left we left them balloons and candy as our thanks to them.

We always leave a few bucks a day at the end of the stay. BUT if we get anything special we leave some money that day too. (towel animals)

Since I don't like Mousekeeping in and out when I have my computer in the room I keep the "Do not disturb" sign on the door. The DVC units provide a vacuum & they'll bring us towels on the 4th day (no tip for this). However at the end of the stay I leave a thank you note & tip $5+ per room & an extra $10 if I have a kitchen (not kitchenette) (I do try to clean my best & run the dishwasher before leaving) They also get all change we've accumulated during the stay laid out mickey style ;)

For a family of 4, I tip $5 a day. If I ask for specific items I usually add an extra $2. I always leave a thank you note daily with my tip.

Wow, you folks certainly are friendly. I've never tipped any housekeeping staff at a hotel before. I tip waiters/waitresses what I feel they deserve at restaurants, but don't put money in tip jars or tip the mailman or anything like that. Housekeeping gets paid for their job, and that's fine for me. Unlike waiters who get paid much less than minimum wage which is different, why tip?

I think the OP has the information needed. Maybe we can stop yet another tipping thread from going to far.

We generaly tip $5 per room as a baseline. When it's obvious mousekeeping is going above and beyond with towel critters etc we tip extra. Like others, we also place the tips in an envelope pre-addressed to them and include a small note of thanks. We've always had great service from mousekeeping over the years.
