I’d like to give my remaining €50’s and €100’s from my last DCL trip as additional tips to anyone who’s country uses the €. Seems a waste to get fewer dollars back when I could just be more generous to a CM that could use the money back at their home. I’m planning on US dollar for all other CM’s. I know ship banking is weird so I want to only give Euros to those that I verify still use euros at home before I add to their tip.
I tried not to bother you guys here and asked on social media but it’s been 2 days waiting on approval for my question there. Wasn’t thinking this question would have been controversial or offensive???

Hi, dont know how ship banking goes but it’d seem that there are lots of staff from europe on the boats, they’ll appreciate anything, dont worry. Some african and asian countries use Euros as unofficial currencies.

i don't see any problem with that except for finding the crew members that are from (probably) Eastern European countries. I can't remember but I think their home country is listed on their name tags? Those are pretty high denomination bills. There are some crew members who are not allowed to accept tips at all, I think?

A lot of these eastern european countries will willingly accept the Euro as a more stable currency alongside their own. Its a pretty international currency in the way the US dollar is and the pound used to be before boris tanked it.

I would guess there are more Eastern European cast members than Western? Here are the countries that accept the Euro:

Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain.

I'd say if you give someone 5 Euros it might be considered a hassle. If you give ANYONE a one hundred Euro note as an extra tip, they will be happy. Even if they can't easily spend it, they'll take the time to find someone to swap it for dollars.

I’m hoping a few of the standard envelope people will be able to use the euro I have left over. Yes I still noticed they listed the countries below on the name tags. Although Peter the cruise director still has Switzerland/Germany (my daughter and I disagree) and a few months ago he said he has lived in Florida for years now.

Cast members have no difficulty changing currency, but know that they may lose a percentage of it to conversion fees (e.g. 3-5%) if you're not tipping in the official currency. If you're on a European cruise it'll be pretty common for them to get tips in EUR or GBP so it shouldn't even be much hassle because they can wait to get a critical mass of it before changing it out.

Are you planning on giving it to any random cm that has a name tag from Europe? It’s rare I get a server a or host from Europe. Most are from the Philippines, India or Central America.

When I took the transatlantic I gave a mix of tips depending on how they responded to my question of usefulness of euro now that they were going to Europe. Didn’t even ask those with non-euro countries if they were interested in a euro tip. Which some could have actually lived in Europe but so they got US dollars. I’m not interested in making difficult conversations about usefulness of euro when they probably have enough difficulty with the dollar that they have to convert to their home money currency form.
What would bug me is if they have to pay a fee every time they change my tip into there home currency. Maybe that’s what they expect as a traveling worker. But if I have some and can avoid that exchange fee for them, seems like I am doing a good thing. No?

A lot of the crew leave the ship in European ports to sightsee, eat, drink, buy stuff. I would think any of them would appreciated some spending money.

That’s what I thought right away, but some don’t leave the ship to send it all home. That left me so stressed out there. I just want to be a good person to people who treat me like a human being and make me feel special. It’s such a gift I get there that I want to help not hinder.

As someone who works in a non-tipped service position a thank you goes a long way. It's better than money and not as awkward.

If it’s extra money (not their standard tip), even with a transaction fee for doing a foreign exchange (FOREX) still leaves a nice gift.

For those that fly home after a contract, any large international airport should have a FOREX kiosk. We might not notice places that exchange USD, as it is widely accepted across the world (sometimes preferred).

I would gladly accept €50 or 100.
