Tipping for Counter Service/Take Out/Fast Food

The only carry out place I tip at is Papa John's and that's because I know a lot of the kids that work there since we order from there often. Other places like Subway, Schlotzky's, etc. I don't leave a tip.

OMG everywhere I go lately has a tip container even one grocery store I go to and I bag my own groceries. I ignore all of those tip jars and the only place I tipped recently outside of a restaurant was the fish store and they didn't have a tip jar :-), they cleaned and deveined my shrimp for ,me and that was worth the $5.00 I gave him heck I would have paid 20 to get it done.

I tip $1 per drink because my drinks are typically something like venti americano iced with extra ice two pumps white mocha two pumps regular mocha. Not just tall latte. And like I said, it's just a dollar. A freaking dollar. What's a dollar to make someone else happy?

You weren't in the Starbucks in Salem this morning?:rotfl2: I always tip in Starbucks & Dunks. ITA with happy, most of these jobs are low paying, I make good money so have no problem throwing .50/1.00 their way.

Fast food the only time I tip is on delivery, then I am pretty generous.

I tended bar & waitressed all thru college so I guess I am sympathetic to busting my butt for tips. In our house I am the overtipper, he is the under tipper. I will say I wouldn't tip before hand for service but if after it was exceptional I would plunk down a buck on the counter.

The credit card processing service might just have the tip thing automatically added in because the place is programmed as a restaurant. I would not feel bad or pressured into tipping just because it was on the screen.

This. I think it's built-into the newer technology POS systems. The little cafe in our office building just got a new one with a tablet type thing that you sign with your finger and has a tip screen. The only people who work there own the place and I've gotten to know them and don't think they did it to milk the customers. It's just an integrated part of the new system.

It's the same screen I see on all those same type POSs and on small shops or delivery places that use Square for iPhone

but if it at all customizable they can program it on whether or not to show the screen and the amounts.

I wouldn't tip there either, but do at Starbucks etc. I will add that our Starbucks in Target doesn't take tips. I find that odd, does anyone else have one like that? Is it a Target policy to not allow tips?

Probably a Target thing, I know someone that works at a Starbucks in a Target and he is a Target employee.

My bigger issue with places like this is their asking for a tip BEFORE the service has been rendered. But I just put no tip and move on.

Well originally, tips were paid before the service. It was more of a bribe to get good service rather than a reward after the fact for good service. So tipping is returning to its original form.
