Tip Jar at Subway?

I went into Subway yesterday and as I was paying for my sandwich, I notice a tip jar in front of the register. I didn't realize Subway was a "tipping" position, so I threw my change in the jar. Does your Subway have a tip jar and do you tip them? I am on the fence about going back now because they never had one before. Don't get me wrong, I tip whenever I should and very well, but at Subway??

same thing at coffee shops

What is next the post office?

They have one at the Dairy Queen in my mall.

I don't tip them. These people make the same amount or maybe more than some of my employees and they turn down tips all the time for great customer service (wrapping gifts for customers, etc)

It's not the same as waitstaff that gets $2.13 an hour.

Makes me not want to go to these places because you almost feel pressured.

I have to wonder if the parent companies of these shops know and okay this?

That is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO not allowed!!!!!!!!! Can you PM me with where you happend to see that?? That is a HUGE no no and needs to be taken care of!!

Thanks!!!

Our Subway does, so does Starbucks....
I just ingore the jar and I don't care if they think less of me for not tipping.

I had a friend making $7 an hour at Starbucks. He certainly wasn't relying on the tips.

I did see a cute "tip" cup once. Under the word tips it said something like "Joe's college spending money" or something similar. The guy was nice so I gave him my change for creativity. As I threw in my change, I told him it was because he was nice and his tip cup made me laugh. The kid was creative and I could afford the 30 cents so why not.

There are tip jars in MANY of our counter service restaurants, delis, and other places. I never use it.

I don't tip at counter service restaurants. I understand Starbucks because that is like tipping a bartender. OTOH, I only ever buy plain coffee to go at Starbucks so I don't tip them either.:o

Our Subway does too and nope we never give them a tip. That would be like tipping someone at McDonalds or any other fast food restaurant. Like another poster said, they aren't relying on tips for their pay like other restaurant workers do.

All the delis, sandwiches places have the tip jars. Sorry I don't put anything into them.My sanwiches costs enough already.I also love the places the put out the big decorated jars at Christmas. That anooys me, so I definetly don't contribute.

Since tipping is for actualy SERVICE, I wouldn't tip any counter service person, who basically just takes the order and hands you a bag of food. What's to tip, how well they handle the bag for you, or how well they tried to talk you into supersizing it?

The Subway shop next to my office here has a tip jar too. I never tip counter service.

There are tip jars in most of the Subway locations in New York City.

Our Quizno's has one, our subway doesn't. At Quizno's my kids order some pretty unique subs, and the workers are really good about getting it right. So about half the time, I'll toss some change in there. They really are making the sandwich, and in a non-standard way, so I do consider it a service.

Now subway is specifically a made to order kind of place, so I wouldn't think the same thing there.

Yeah, our Mrs. Fields in the mall has a tip jar (they serve lunch as well - sandwiches and soup). I never leave a tip. They are getting paid over minimum wage there and I don't consider schlepping cookies a tipped position. ;)

There are tip jars everywhere now. Starbucks has one which I think is funny because we recently had someone apply for a job with us and she had worked previously as a barista at Starbucks and made $9.50 an hour!

I think I'll set up a Paypal tip jar in my signature and those of you who feel serviced by my posts can tip me. ;)

I never put money in those tip jars, and they are popping up more and more in fast food type places. I order takeout from our local Cheesecake Factory sometimes, and they have a tip jar out there. I never tip them--all's they do is take my money. It comes bagged from the kitchen.

LOL!!

We have tip jars everywhere. It is at our local Chinese restaraunt and I never leave a tip. I have not seen one at our Subway yet. Maybe I should go check it out for lunch!

There was a tip jar at the pretzel place in the mall last weekend  . All they do is had you a preztel and fill your drink-- and it expensive to begin with. I don't usually tip at counter service places beacuse you are already paying for that basic service.

I see tip jars springing up at all kinds of shops, fast food places, even some stores. Seems like it is getting out of hand.

I do not usually tip at places like Subway, Dunkin Donuts, Dairy Queen, etc. JMO these are not "tipped" positions.

I see tip jars all over the place now, i just tip when i think they go beyond what they normal would have done, at those places

I also see tip jars but choose not to participate.

Some of you were talking about how little the counter person does, but on occasion I find the wait staff at a sit-down does little more than that as well!!!

At any rate, I think we do not expect to tip when we go into a counter place -- we do in a sit-down place.
