I heard a rumor this past week that Disney was working on a Tinkerbell movie (and that production had been stopped). Has anyone else heard about this?

I hadn't heard about a movie, but I know they have the new Disney Fairies line of products, so I wouldn't be surprised.

I heard the rumor briefly around a year ago, and had not heard any more.

I did hear of the Movie along with 1900 Park Fare Breakfest with Tink and a few other fairies.

Maybe the new lines not selling as well.DD has made me do my part but you never know.

Hmmm... I wonder if they missed the marketing train on this one. When I first saw the Fairy merchandise at the Disney Store, I excitedly ran to a CM to ask if there were going to be any upcoming videos/movies. The CM said absolutely not, they were only going to be releasing the series of books.

My DD has also made me do my part ;) but I have to say, I'm not sure who their target audience is with the books. My DD is 6 so I've been reading the chapter books to her. The stories are at her level, but boring for adults to read, and I'm sure much too young a level for children who are able to read novels on their own.

The last time I was at the Disney Store, they had their fairy merchandise at a deep discount.

They probably should have went with the movie concept first... I think the days of book-only markets are long gone. Maybe they'll still come up with a quick straight-to-video "meet the fairy" product :confused3

Perhaps they should just try to develop great stories and the merchandising will follow, as opposed to the other way around.

Making a great movie filled with interesting and beloved character takes talents and lots & lots of hard work.

Selling cheap, plastic merchandise to 6 year olds just takes a large ad budget.

Of course, what Disney doesn't want to see is the real characters last for generations - the Disney's Princesses were characters long before they showed up on bed sheets and diapers. But how many people today buy Strawberry Shortcake dolls or other plastic toy creations?

Maybe one day Disney will actually care about what they make. And then they'll be successful again.

If you are interested in the Tinkerbell movie, or the future of the Disney Pixies take a look at Jim Hills article from today.... Really interesting stuff

Interesting argument. You might say that every Disney movie is a platform to launch consumer material. ALthough in this case, launching the consumer goods well before a movie that supports the goods....

Well, speaking as a Mom with a DD6, I want to keep the magic alive in her for as long as possible. If buying a few dolls and books encourages her imagination and all things Never Land... consider me the gullible market Disney is looking for.

However, my DD loves books and these chapter books are just not up to par. And, the only way to answer her questions about which fairies did what and who they are was to visit the website. That's where they need a quick DVD/movie to introduce the characters and their world.

I think the problem is that what Disney considers (or has considered over the last 12 years) as "successful" isn't what you (or I) consider "successful." Perhaps with some new blood at Animation and in the parks, things will begin to change. We shall see.

My daughter is enamored with the fairies - she collected and traded for all of the tokens on the Disneyfairies website within days of them becoming available.

I remember reading a press release that discussed a television series for the fairies, which seems a little more apporopriate. Has anyone else heard that?

I just started at TDS and our tinkerbell/fairies towels are selling fast, and the rest of our merchandise has not been reduced in price. They seem to be fairly popular.
