For a few weeks now I have been wanting to test out time lapse photography. My camera really won't let me do it unless I tether to my computer and bringing my computer out in the cold and raining New England weather just didn't interest me. Nor did sitting and manually pressing the shutter ever few seconds.

Anyway, for those of you who have not heard it on the news, New England is getting battered by a pretty good snow storm right now. I decided to set up my camera in a window and take a time lapse of the street. Unfortunately I got home after the snow started so you don't get to see too much of the initial accumulation from nothing to about 4 inches right now. You can see it the sun se though. I made this video with around 450 shots taken at 10 second intervals. Each photo is then displayed for .03 seconds.

For those who are interested I used Apple's Aperture and Final Cut Express programs. Then I uploaded to YouTube for simplicity's sake.

I would be interested to hear your feedback and if anyone else has examples, please share!

I think you did a great job with this. I liked how the street lights came on as the snow mounted up.

That was cool - I liked the way you caught the cars going by and the tracks they made in the snow. :thumbsup2

Awesome job!!! I liked the way the cars looked going by after it was dark enough to see the head light streaks.

Thanks everyone! I just wish I had made it home in time so you could see the snowless streets getting quickly covered and then the sun setting!

That came out great! I was actually thinking about working on some time lapse photography when it starts to get warmer, I never thought about how fun it could be with the snow (probably because all I think about is how I dislike the snow). What a great idea!

The Castle Lighting sequence I did is in a similar vein (but much smaller in scope), taking about 24 images in about a minute. Not having a tripod I used PS CS4 to align the images and ProShow Gold to compile the show (with music).

The idea is fun and I would like to try more of this, maybe set up a tripod to catch the castle (or some other landmark) from about 30 minutes before sunset through dusk.

The Rebel IR remote is inexpensive enough to play with, I might be able to adapt an interval timer to it.

I like time lapse. I find that it works best if there is a dramatic change in your scene over time. Like you said, it would have worked better if you'd started with a clear street. Still, it was fun to watch. We don't get much of that white stuff here.

My wife did something like this for the pergola she had built in the backyard. She used a remote with a timer built in. I think the shots were at 10 second intervals played back 30fps over five and a half minutes. She gave a DVD to the builder, who loved it.

The video is here.

That was pretty cool. I just purchased a macbook in Nov and I have a lot to learn, I would like to be able to do stuff like that. DW is much better at the tech stuff than I am. I am lucky that I figured how to post, DW had to show me.
