Arts and Crafts **Tie Dye Mickey ears shirts directions**NEW NEW PICS LAST PAGE**

Shirts are dyed and have been sitting for 48 hours. I don't have access to (synthrapol?) for the wash. Can anyone give me advice for keeping the colors as bright as possible? Hot, warm or cold water when washing? Do I add salt to the wash water? Dry in the dryer or hang outside? I would like to finish these tonight and I'm not sure what is the best method.
Thanks in advance!

I just washed mine in cool water and they turned out great! here is a pic

I made several tye dye Mickey shirts years ago, and never really loved them because they have too much white. I used blue, pink, and yellow, all those colors came out moderately bright, but there's too much white in between. What do you think about putting them in some blue or another color - I know it will turn the pink to purple, and the yellow to green... will it just make the whole thing murky? Any suggestions would be welcome. Thanks.

I just finished mine, well still have to wash them, this morning and they are looking cool. I have a lot of white in my shirt shirt but it's almost tinged pale purple so it looks nice. We'll see when they are dry. I'll post pictures when they are done. We tried a different technique of a bunch of them.

ok I have read through every post and I think we (me and DD13) will be able to handle this. We leave the 13th and my daughter has no camp the week before so to keep her busy this is what I have planned. We will be making 5 shirts. Has anybody done this to a shirt that is somewhat gauzy? it is 100% cotton but it is pretty gauzy? will we have to use less dye?

I did a really thin and kinda gauzy shirt- and also ruined one! Just be VERY careful when stitching and pulling the stitches tight. It's very easy to tear the shirt. It also doesn't take as much dye as the others, so be careful with the 'ears' so the dye doesn't bleed a lot into the rest of the shirt. Good luck! :wizard:

After reading this entire thread (yes, all 126 pages :scared1:), I have convinced myself that I can do this. I have a couple questions, though. When drawing the Mickey head, can I use Crayola washable markers? They are supposed to wash out, and I already have those. Or should I just go ahead and buy a fabric marking pen?
About the rubber bands: do I need thick ones or thin ones? I actually have to buy them, so it doesn't really matter, but I'd like to know which ones to buy and just wondered which ones you guys use.
Oh, on the subject of gloves: Do you think exam gloves would work? I have boxes of those!
One last question: After I baste and pull the Mickey head, do I put the rubber band around the whole 'wad' of fabric that is the pulled head? That's what I got from what I read, but I just wanted to be sure I'm not doomed from the get-go.
Thanks, everyone!

Wow... ALL 126 pages! That's impressive! Here are MY answers, but others may do it differently...(I posted pics some pages back -p110-if you want to check out my technique!)

I draw the Mickey head with a pencil-just very lightly. It always washes out-I'm all about using what you have! I also thing the exam gloves will work just fine. You just need to keep the dye off of your skin.
For the rubber bands, I use a thick ones around the base of the mickey head- just below the stitching. (this may answer your other question!) I use thin ones to section off the 'pie' pieces/hold the spiral together.

Good luck! You CAN do this!! It's not hard once you get the hand of it, and it's really fun!:goodvibes

Thanks, MagicMomma! I love your shirts. We (DS4, DS6, and sister) attempted to do a few shirts today using the Mickey head directions. We used Dylon dye and did what the directions told us to do, except they said only to wait 8 hours or something before rinsing/washing. I will end up waiting almost 24 hours simply because I will be sleeping or busy until then. It didn't say to use the sodium carbonate, so I didn't; do you think this will be an issue? What kind of dye do you use?
When I wash these, is there anything I should put in with the wash (salt, vinegar, etc.) to help set them? And if so, how would I do that in my HE washer?
I ended up using the Crayola to draw my Mickey. I did it in yellow, so if it doesn't actually wash out, I'll just have a yellow ring. No big. I didn't think to use a pencil. That's a good idea.
I am hoping they turn out okay; I haven't tie dyed anything in probably 20 years (has it really been that long?!). We went with the cheaper dye in case I royally messed them up. Or in case someone else did. ;) It doesn't really matter since I'm sure the boys will love them because they made them.
Once I figure out how to do this, I will probably buy the Dharma dyes since I am intending to make these for my nephews for Christmas to put in their "You are going to Disney" bags. I may even make some for Mom and Dad, since they are coming, too.
If/when I figure out how to post pictures, I will post these. Even if they suck. Hey, everyone needs a laugh now and then, right? Here's hoping...
Thanks so much for your help!

The dyes you used are different, therefore you get a different result, I think you have to boil the clothes with those dyes, they are not fiber reactive like the dyes used for tie dye. I think it would be good practice but not the same results.

The shirts are done! And soooo much better than I anticipated. Tomorrow I will attempt to upload a pic of them. I am so excited!!
Thanks, everyone!

Thanks, Pixie. After reading your tutorial and subsequent posts, I knew not to buy dye that wasn't fiber reactive. It was a good thing, too, since the last time I had tie dyed anything was 20+ years ago. And we did use RIT back then because, here at least, that was all that was readily available.
I didn't use the soda ash for my first attempt, but I bought some last night. I'm going to try this again. I bought Arm& Hammer washing powder. How much of this do I use in my water when pre-soaking my shirts?
Even with the fading, the shirts came out really well, but as I understand it, the soda ash keeps it from fading? I am really excited about making these! So is my weird sister; she wants to tie dye her sheets with Mickey heads!
I think I may have started my own little tie dye epidemic here in KY! I'm good with it. Thanks so much for your help!
