Pixi Dust, I love it! That looks great!

I have been subscribing to this post since it started and have done my own shirts and they actually came out pretty good and now I am ready to do it again for our next trip!

How do you get such a bold white line around the mickey head? Also, how do you get purple to go throught the whole shirt without it looking like a big blob!

I know these questions have probably been ased a million times but I couldn't find anything going back.

Also, I think I remember you use the Dharma Dyes right? What colors would you recommend for men/boys that are not too bright but look nice?

Thanks for your help!

Pixie Dust- that is awesome!!! Is that what they call a black rainbow? Can you please tell us how you did it? It's beautiful!

I'm getting ready to order some dharma dyes. I'm doing the traditional black/red/white and I'm going to use the oxblood red with the black I have (new black). I don't want it too bright red so I'm hoping that will be a good choice.

For the second set I'm thinking carribean blue since it's DD's fave color and that DS will wear it, too. Now, for the second color (only wanting to do a two-color shirt) I was thinking robin's egg blue for a nice monochromatic look, but then was also thinking green. But which green? Cayman Isle? Or go brighter with either kelly green or bright green?

Ack! I'm horrid with decisions. So, what would YOU do? This inquiring mind wants to know...
and thanks in advance for your opinions!

Thank you. :lovestruc

The white part is where the rubber bands are, sometimes they look super others not so much :confused3

The purple is from the blue mixing with red, you get purple, if you overlap the colors you get secondary colors, green, orange, purple...

For experience boys like, blues, like navy, light blues, greens... Yes, get dharma if you want great colors.

Thank you Cindi!

Absolutely! I know some people are afraid of using black, but it can look good, you do have to be careful because it can get messy.

OMG these shirts are soo adorable. But I don't think I'm crafty enough to pull this off! The directions (on page one) are confusing (bast?) Can't I just pay somebody to make these for me.....yes, I typically go through life this way incase you're wondering

OMG 13 days without any posts? What's wrong in the tie dye world?!!?!?!?!!?!?

I must remedy this. I just placed another dharma order, and added new black, raspberry, hot pink, and cerulean blue to our mix!

I know right! They might be having fun at the beach or Disney!!

Here a pic on some shirts I made...

New to the board and I just absolutely love your shirts....

anyway you can give me a little more hints on how to do the black rainbow tye dye without getting the black all over the place?

Also I was looking on the Dharma website for colors and there were 4 different blacks...which one did you use that gave that true black Mickey?

Thanks

No clue how they are going to come out......

I got the large Jacquad kit to "practice" with and had a 55% off coupon at AC Moore...kit only came to $9 & change so I went back and got another in case I really don't like these. I was also able to get extra soda ash and a Tulip Black dye which I filled half way so that the black was a strong black, both with 55% off. When I get the technique down, I was going to spend more and get the Dharma Dyes....

I did three Hanes tanks and three Faded Glory Ts and tried a variety of techniques....rainbow swirl Mickey, black rainbow swirl Mickey, blue/green swirl Mickey, red/black Mickey and Minnie bulls eye, red/blue multiple Mickeys on both a T and a tank....it took my forever but I think I finally have basting a Mickey's head down!

So here is what I think went wrong....the bottles still leaked even though I tightened them as much as I could...so as I am trying to do a red/blue bulls eye, red is going into the blue and vice versa...all this would be fine for a girl but I was aiming the shirt for a boy so a mix of purple would not be cool....

The yellow bottle was squirting dye out horrible as I was trying to get it into it's individual pie section of a swirl....it was coming out at like an angle from the bottle? It was so crazy....I'm wondering what bottles you guys get when you order from Dharma....AC Moore didn't have extra empty bottles in their tie dye section so not sure where else I can find them (I do have a Michael's and Joanne fabrics near me too)...is there a better bottle to use when I go to order the dyes from Dharma.....

I was also so afraid that I didn't add enough through the folds yet at the same time I wonder if I added too much....

And lastly even though I changed my gloves multiple times while also using paper towels to wipe off extra dye (sorry Mother Earth!), I still would get dye on a new shirt as I tried to wring it out from the soda ash.....ugghhh

Our trip is in August and I really wanted to do shirts for my kids and my niece and nephews (especially since it is my nephews' first trip!)....looks like I may be tie dyeing all summer long to get this right!

Also is there any way a newbie on here can post pics? Do I need to load it to a photobucket account instead?

Sometimes bottles are just fussy. If you find they're leaking from around the threads where you screw on the top, get yourself a roll of plumbers tape. It will help big time.

Depending on how much dye you used on the blue and red one, you may find you don't have a lot of overlap. I was afraid of that with the italian themed ones I did for my friend (particularly the swirl), and the purple and yellow bullseye I did for my cousin's daughter but it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. You really just won't know until you rinse.

I've never bought bottles from dharma, we reuse the ones from the Jacquard kit, plus we have bottles that we got at Walmart that are supposed to be used for condiments, and we have bottles that we got in the Wilton section at Joanns (for candy making). They all work fine.

The dye on the gloves issue..well it's just kind of the nature of the beast. You'll probably find it doesn't make a huge difference since tiedye is a mix of colors anyway. If you have a shirt where a spot of color would be a big issue, put on fresh gloves between colors or if its white, use a little bleach. On the striped italian themed shirt, there was a little smudge of blue in the white stripe. A little bleach took care of it.

I think you can post pictures one you have 10 posts. You'll need an account like photobucket.

Quick question about tye-dye kits(I am a tie-dye virgin, lol) I bought kits at JoAnns today, they are simple with only 3 colors and say to just add water. I noticed at the beginning of this thread the instructions say to soak in "ash water". The instructions don't say to do that on my kit. It just says wash and either use damp from washer or dry, depending on preferred method. Is taht ok? Will it work out the same? Also, should I leave damp from washer or dry before dying and would it be best after the shirts dry for 24 hrs to go ahead and wash them again? Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thank you all for being so nice!!

Also: Is there any particular thread to use for the Ears and do I take it out after dying? Can I use the dye in my kit again if there is leftovers? Thank you!

The kits already have the soda ash mix with the dye. You can dye them dry or wet, I never wash mine, I soak them and wring them with my hands then I dye them. You have to use the dye within 45 minutes (kits dye)

Thank you!! I know you said you just soak and then dye, but what do you recommend for me since I don't actually have to soak before? Does it make a difference if I do the dye with a damp or dry shirt? Plus, when do I take the thread out of the shirt?

Thank you again!! :flower3:
