Arts and Crafts **Tie Dye Mickey ears shirts directions**NEW NEW PICS LAST PAGE**

Hey! I did it! I made the shirts and you can too! AND I posted photos. As you can see, not as full of color as they could be, but I am happy with them.

Your Mickey's came out great!! That's the one thing I usually don't have a problem with, it's getting the color into the shirt and not having a lot of white.

I find that if I have a lot of dye on me (and I usually do..even with gloves) that rubbing on of the soda ash water on it helps a lot. I wash THAT off with soap and water, but some of the ash water on a paper towel has worked wonders, I even used it to get dye off an outdoor table!

Shirts are ready to dye... but it's pouring down rain today, so I guess I'll be tie-dyeing in the garage! Hope I don't make too much of a mess... but I probably will!:rotfl:

How do you get multiple heads on the shirt? Just tie off smaller areas and mroe than 1?

OK, it is hard to tie-dye in secret....my kids don't know it, but in one week we are going to wake them up and tell them we are headed to Disney.

Then I made 4 of this color scheme....tanks with small Mickey's for the girls, T's for the boys.

Thanks for the great instructions!

I'm going to try and touch up some of the shirts I did last week and I'm trying to figure out the best way to do it. I bought 2 of the little square spongy paint brushes and I'm going to mix up a little bit of dye. Should I get the shirt wet first? Should I soak it in soda ash water again; and if I do, what will happen to the dye that's already on the shirt?

OK! You need the soda ash for the dye to "stick" on it. I had done touch up before when I tied my rubber bands a little to good, here is what you need to do.

Wet the brush in the soda ash mix,( I hope you had saved it) then get the shirt wet, not soaking wet, just a little wet on the area you want to apply the dye, put a piece o cardboard or whatever in between the shirt. Then dip the brush on the dye just a little (try on a rag first to see how much you need to add and how hard you want to press) then just kinda paint on it, let it dry for at least 4 hours and then wash it normal. It will work!

I knew you would have the answer! I really don't want to do my shirt over so I figure this is the easiest way to fix it. I didn't save it, but that's okay, I have a big box of Arm & Hammer washing soda so I can make up just a smaller batch.

Should I rinse out the little sponge brush before dipping it in the dye, or just leave the soda ash water on it?

Yes, just leave the soda ash water, it should be ok. Just like if you were painting, very small amount of dye at the time. It might look different from the rest of the shirt, don't worry, it would be fine after the wash. :thumbsup2

Where does everyone make their shirts? I planned on doing it in my kitchen. Does it really get that messy? I have a large L-shaped kitchen and planned on bringing in (2) 4'x6' tables. I would never think about doing it on my kitchen table. LOL

I'm doing mine outside. We're doing shirts, pillowcases and bandannas. I figure I might as well get my hands messy once and do it all together!

I've been doing them outside, but a basement you don't mind getting a little messy would be a good option if you're worried about weather. You might want to invest in a plastic drop cloth if you're thinking kitchen.

Shirts and pillowcases are soaking. Would love to do a smaller batch first to make sure I am doing it right, but today is the only day I can do it. Im attempting them on the washer and dryer with an old vinyl tablecloth down. UGH! I wish I wasnt a perfectionist because all I keep thinking is that Ill do it wrong.:headache: Happy thoughts...happy thoughts...next month we're in the World...next month we're in the World:cool1::cool1::lmao:

HHMMMM...those you tube videos make it look easy. How do you hold the shirt and not get color all over the white that you havent done yet? I wish opening of the bottle wasnt so big. It was coming out so fast. The dye seemed to "travel" through the fabric as soon as it touched it. Is that normal? I wondered if my fabric was too wet from the soda ash, but I took one apart just to make sure and I couldnt wring any more out. Oh, the waiting game....

DD8 , DS5 and I just finished our 4 shirts. They are waiting in the laundry room in plastic bags until we can open them tomorrow. I'm worried. The kids were not exactly "helpful".. :rotfl:

I am worried we didn't wring them out enough after the soda ash. I did try, but they were still pretty drippy when we were dyeing. We'll see how it goes.

Hi Roxy!
I'm getting ready to tie dye red and yellow but would love to add some black as an accent like on this shirt. How did you do this? Will you share your secret? :)

Well, we did our shirts today! I can't wait to see how they turned out. I did a regular Tshirt, a twisted/knot-front shirt (from Dharma), and two girls' sundresses (also from Dharma). My shirt and the sundresses are all multi-mickey headed.

Mu colors are orange, yellow and black like Pixie's above (ah but I could only dream that they'd turn out that nice)..I just hope they aren't complete brown blobs in the end. It might have been overly ambitious to try so many mickeys on a shirt on my first attempt, we'll see! :rotfl2:

I did see some bleeding through the rubberbands on at least one of my mickeyheads, but I have my bleach pen ready.

The hardest part for me was the twisting and making my "bun". The plastic under the shirt twisted too and as a result I doubt I will have very pretty well defined spirals. That difficulty was enhanced by my garment choices- the dresses had smocking which just did not twist well and my knot-front top I think just might have too much going on in the front (my mickeys are in the lower corner and upper shoulder, offset.) The plain T-shirt was MUCH easier to work with by far!

Fingers crossed, I'll post pics as soon as I can! Thanks Roxy for all of your help!!!
