Arts and Crafts **Tie Dye Mickey ears shirts directions**NEW NEW PICS LAST PAGE**

Hey everyone--thought I'd post a pic of the 19 shirts I made for my son's class trip. I know they are not Mickey head shirts but the kids are going to wear these to WDW in June. In case you are interested, I used Dharma dye. The colors are Bright Green, Turquoise, Lemon Yellow and Royal Blue.

Nice! way to go, those are a lot of shirts and they look cool, I bet the kids loved 'em.

Are you basting the Mickley Head outline that you have drawn on the shirt then pulling the basting string?

I basted all the way around the Mickey head & ears (one long way around, not 3 separate), then pulled that super tight. I used dental floss. You really can't break it! After that, you put rubber bands super tight right where the string/floss is pulled. I went down about 1 1/2 inches into the shirt.

And I LOVE the class full of shirts!! So much fun!

General question for everybody who has done this - How many shirts are you guys able to get done in a "batch"?

I have so enjoyed seeing everyone's creativity and beautiful shirts. Thanks to everyone who posts their tips, photos, etc. I'm finally ready to give it a try for an upcoming trip.

Okay..I think I basically have the idea but I do still have a couple of questions for clarification. I am doing 4 shirts and have ordered the small Dharma tie dye kit.

Can I soak 4 shirts in 1 gallon soda ash water or do I need more?

For anyone that has used dental floss---- waxed or unwaxed? Does it matter? I thought I read somewhere that fishing line, the type of floss (waxed or unwaxed) and silk thread are needed because they won't hold the dye? Is that right?

If I use the bottles to squirt dye on the shirts, do I need to flip the "bun" over to do the other side or will the dye soak through?

And, finally...to PixieDust32--love your shirts! My son (17 y.o) really likes the black and red one and is anxious for me to try and make him one. Did you use Dharma dyes and, if so, which numbers are the dyes that you used? I want to make sure I get it nice and bold like the one you did. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Can I soak 4 shirts in 1 gallon soda ash water or do I need more? That will be enough. You might have to "squish" the shirts down in the bucket but that is plenty. You just have to get the shirts wet, let them soak awhile then wring them out so they aren't too wet.

I thought I read somewhere that fishing line, the type of floss (waxed or unwaxed) and silk thread are needed because they won't hold the dye? Is that right? I have used waxed (not mint) dental floss. I know that Pixiedust uses silk thread. I wouldn't recommend using fishing line. Depending on the fabric, you might tear the shirt when you pull the basting tight after sewing it. I have torn a small hole in a shirt even using the dental floss.

If I use the bottles to squirt dye on the shirts, do I need to flip the "bun" over to do the other side or will the dye soak through? You should flip the bun over and use the same colors in the wedges that you used on the top.

Please see my answers above. :) (But PixieDust is the master of the Mickey Tie Dye!! ;))

Thank you Whama.

@ Tamiroo... You can look at the pics on the first page, yes you have to turn the bun and like Whama said apply the same colors on the botton as your did on the top, (slices).

Thanks for the wonderful instructions we are going in Sept and can't wait to try this!

Anyone have tips on how to keep the white parts of the shirt white?

I made some a few weeks ago and they are awesome. :lovestruc
However, after I washed them the color bled a bit into the white parts and is a blue-gray color. I really want the white to be white. I've got another batch to do this weekend.
