Anyone have tips on how to keep the white parts of the shirt white?

I made some a few weeks ago and they are awesome. :lovestruc
However, after I washed them the color bled a bit into the white parts and is a blue-gray color. I really want the white to be white. I've got another batch to do this weekend.

I used this special detergent that came in the kit I bought from Dharma called synthrapol? (something like that) and it seems to help keep the colors set.

Okay, so I finished my shirts. Originally made 4.....two of them needed to be outlined with the bleach pen. Has anyone else had the issue of the bleach pen not actually bleaching? I outlined the MM heads and then washed them and all of the bleach was gone...no outline. I am thinking of doing them again but not sure if its worth it.
I did two more and they turned out great. We (DD and I) got better at using the rubber bands around the head and really getting the dye in the fabric. My next attempt will be a black and red one like PixieDust did (for my son).
I'll try to post pics---not sure how so I'll have to figure that out. We are leaving for WDW this Tues and the two shirts that need bleaching are for friends.

Thanks. I don't know that I will ever be that ambitious. I still haven't started my first t-shirts. The supplies are still sitting in the bags. :sad2:

Just do it - trust me - it was so much fun! We did two sets before our trip in Oct (so we were the matching goober family again :)). One set in red, white, blue and another we wore on halloween in yellow and orange and black (there are pictures somewhere a lot of pages back).

We are taking the red white blue to Disneyland in August. Don't expect to see too many there!

And will be making christmas colors for Nov trip!

A question - was in ACM today and they had tshirts for 2.50 so I grabbed a red one and a black one. Was thinking I'd trace and baste mickey head on red and then bleach out the mickey head and maybe 'tie dye' with bleach on some parts to remove the color and do what I guess I'd call a reverse tie die. Has anyone tried this? I love the tie dye shirts but I hate wearing a white shirt. I just don't look good if there is too much white.

The other idea I had for the black shirt was the same general idea - but I got some fabric spray paint (non-aerosol) that appears to be a bunch of colors somehow - was going to make a mickey stencill or now that I see the smaller versions maybe smaller mickeys and then spray this on (it says great on dark colors). Anyone tried this?

Looking for any crazy ideas that go in this general direction.

I could wear Mickey clothes every day!

Maria

Our first try at shirts! We really love three of them especially! So much fun! Can't wait to try this again!

My second set of shirts are in the final wash right now. Keeping my fingers crossed that the white part stays white! I'll post pictures later.

Okay, so these are the pics. I wasn't thrilled with them. I outlined the yellow and green with bleach pens. I ended up re-doing my shirt and my daughter's...those pics are the last two shirts. Better, my daughter's was great but I still want to do another for me.

Thanks...I figure I need more practice. And a new hobby is born.
When I was at WDW last week I saw at least 2 sets of people with these on....pretty cool.

PixieDust, you are the queen of the swirl. Any tips?

I love the color combo on the last one.

I finally have my Mickey basted. I'll will be soaking it tonight. I'll be sure to let you know how it all turns out. :thumbsup2

Aww that's so cute with the tutu!

I had done these a few years ago but, I had used a kit. This time I used some Jacquard dye from my art store and I WAY overestimated how much dye I would need. I used two cups of water for each color and it hardly looks like I used any for 3 shirts! Now I am looking around my house for other things to dye. :rotfl2: Do you think the DH would be happy to walk in and see tie dyed sheets? ha ha
