Arts and Crafts **Tie Dye Mickey ears shirts directions**NEW NEW PICS LAST PAGE**

Awesome! Im jealous now :) I want to be there too ;) Keep trying, you will learn more tricks as you go.

im going to attempt mine this weekend...do you wash the shirts first? then soak them in soda ash? I couldnt find the post with that info I just found the post on how to tie dye. I also would like to know how you did the white around the mickey head. All I could find was a white pen for writing on fabric in the same isle as the tie dye stuff...

I didn't wash the shirts first because the soda ash that you soak them in is also a cleansing agent.
I used a blue pencil to mark the Mickey ears. You can find it in the fabric department at Walmart or at a Joanne's type store. I followed the advice of someone who used dental floss to baste the design. It was awesome because you can pull it very tightly and it will not break. I made my basting stitches almost anally even and I think that's why the design was so distinct. JMHO....have fun with this. It was very exciting!!

Two things.....shirts are soaking in soda ash since yesterday afternoon....will be elastizing (coined word) and dyed this afternoon....I'll keep you all up to date with pics to follow.

PixieDust32....thank you so much for your detailed instructions which were very easy to follow. Being a crafter/sewer, I do appreciate when someone takes the time to share. It's disconcerting when people don't want/try to help others. I have another question....I have the outline ( side view ) of Mickey's face, with his nose visible. Do you think that, following the same premise with the basting, that the design will be visible or will his nose get lost in the design? I probably didn't describe this correctly but I hope you get the general idea.

Thanks for you help...

I used the Mickey profile for the last set I did. Here are the pics.

Awesome! that mickey looks cool. Love the color combo. Way to go!

About the soda ash question... You do have to soak the shirts for about 30 minutes before you apply the dye. I had never used the dental floss but I know lots of people had and it worked fine too.
About the white line, you never know, sometimes is the dye, the darker dye are thicker so it doesn't run wild like others, most of my shirts have the white park due to the rubber bands being very very very thight, but when the dye goes thru I just use a bleach pen to define the outline, just be very careful if you push to hard the bleach line would be very thick and ugly, practice on a towel first.

I bet you could also do a mickey head with the Batik style. Its done with wax to cover the area you dont want to dye. Oh crud, then mickeys head would be the color of the shirt.

I had tried resist and it didn't work as expected, maybe I need to keeo trying.

LOVE the Mickey Profile!! How clever!!

Did anyone watch Martha Stewart try and tie dye? :rotfl2:

http://www.marthastewart.com/article/tie-dyed-leggings

(Unfortunately the link just is a picture of the leggings they dyed - but Martha couldnt have been more hesitant - and she got dye on her sleeve - the way she tipped the bottle!! The girl doing the dying was really great - it made me realize that the way she scrunched and then added the rubber bands AS WELL AS how she showed how to get the dye into the folds -

That's what Pixie has been saying ALL along! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2

Oh really? I didn't see it. Let me check it out. Thanks Sandy girl.

Awesome Sandy! Very very simple technique and fun. I love the constellations and nebula inspiration from the artist. I would try to do a couple for my shop.

Thanks for sharing.
 :hippie:

Thanks for the directions PixieDust! I've got all the materials to try it, but before I start I just have a few questions:

1) Do I gather the stitches I basted around the mickey head, and the put elastics on, or do I just leave them as is and put elastics on?

2) Do I sew around the whole ears ( like the blue in my picture) or do I just sew around the parts of the years not connected to the head ( like the yellow in my picture)

I justs want to make sure I dont make a stupid mistake and ruin my shirts!

Hi there.

You have to gather all the stitches together and kind of use the rest of the thread or floss whatever you are using, and tie it around it, then put the rubber bands very very tight.

Sew or basted aroung THE WHOLE mickey head!!

Let me know if you have any other question. Good Luck :yay::cheer2:

rock.my.socks....don't worry, you can't ruin your shirts. Just be sure to baste the Mickey head really evenly and pull the stitches tightly. I used dental floss rather than thread and there was no chance of breakage while pulling up the stitches. My Mickey's were better defined than my actual tye dying of the resf of the shirt. When I do it again, I'll stick the tip of the bottle more into the folds of the shirt. Have fun with it!!!
