Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Pixie Dust can you tell me what color red and black you used for this shirt. I like how red the red is. The last one I purchased from darhma was a little to orangey for my taste I like a real red red. Thanks

Blue is Sky blue. Green was made with the blue and yellow on their own. Red was scarlet I think.

Has anyone ever used Synthropol or Dharma Tradings equivalent in a HE washing machine? Last time i tie dyed shirts I had a standard washer and now have a HE.

My shirts just came out of their soda ash soak - let's see if I can get them dyed - it is late, but quiet - better to do while the kids are sleeping (6 and 2)! I have an HE machine, so I will let you know how the sythropol goes in a few days. Wish me luck!

Just wanted to share my pics - 3 mens shirts, 4 ladies shirts, and 4 kids shirts (each lady and child has 2 - I was trying different types of cotton). I used Dharma dyes and I did use the bleach pen. I think they turned out FABULOUS!

What are the best red and green colors for Christmas shirts from Dharma? If we are doing just 2 colors for 10 shirts, will 2 ounces of each still be ok?

Here are two of the ones I made. 9 of us are going the middle of the month. Looks like the rubber bands weren't tight enough and I had a hard time keeping the blue for the mickey head in just that area. I like them though!

I used Bright Green #29 and Chinese red # 10A and was pleased with the results. Because it is tie dye I wanted to keep the colors bright and fun but still have them be Christmassy. I did the shirts a couple of years ago for a woman I work with and forgot to snap a picture before I gave them to her. She had her picture taken withthe Santa at California Adventure and the shirts worked perfectly with the decorations at that park. Also two ounces will be more than enough for 10 shirts. Do not order more - you will have plenty left over.

I'm getting my Dharma order together. I was thinking of ordering the serious starter kit for $25.95 but then I decided to add up all the items individually. You can't buy 1 oz of the dye so I just added half of the 2 oz price. I came up with a total around $16! Shouldn't the kits be discounted rather than more expensive? Anyway, it just solidified my decision to order everything separately.

Ouch! I was going to order 5 lb of soda ash and urea and 32 oz of synthrapol so I would have extra to use up left over dye in the future but shipping was going to be $24. I put them back down to the smallest size and shipping went down to $14. I'm going to go ahead and place the order but does anyone know which craft stores actually carry soda ash, urea and synthrapol? I really want to get the dye from Dharma since everyone has said it is the best but would like to have a go to store for other supplies. I couldn't find them just searching Michael's website other than a tie-dye kit that included soda ash.

Heads up, there is a little shipping calculator in the lower left hand corner of the shopping cart. I had overlooked it.

Also, the Dharma site mentions using salt but I can't actually find any instructions that say to use salt. Is that a substitute for soda ash or something?

Okay...I must have missed a step somewhere. I got my Dharma order in, all the white things to be dyed are sitting in in a stack ready for the soda ash...what is the urea and synthrapol? (I know what urea is...why do I need it here?) We were going to soda ash the things today, but if I need to hunt down the urea and synthrapol first, I will wait. I too would like to know where I can get this as well. (Now I am going to go hunt through this thread for why I need these two things, lol)

The synthrapol is supposed to go into the wash after you dye it to keep the colors from running.

Some people don't use either of these things and some do. My main concern with the synthrapol is that is is supposed to catch those extra molecules of dye that come off in the wash so they don't muddy up the white areas of the shirt. I have spent entirely too long today reading about tie dye.

Thank you very much for the info as well as the quick response! I can go ahead and do my mickey heads and the soda ash then...phew, thought I had to rush all over town before I could start that step. My DH is working from home today, he just said he thinks I could probably get those at the hardware store. Going to make a few calls/google whacks now. Thanks again!

ETA: Just found both at my local Dick Blick Arts. Dharma had it of course, but I should have added it in when I ordered. I was not willing to pay $15 shipping for less than $7 worth of product. Thanks again for the help.

You can get Sodium Carbonated AKA soda ash at HOME DEPOT. Don't order from Dharma, the shipping is way too much. Go to the POOL chemicals area and look for PH UP Sodium Carbonated.

I know this thread is OLD, but I am posting so I can subscribe and won't lose it. I've read about 50 pages of the thread, and in the next few days I hope to read the rest of it.

DH and I are going to the World in 3 weeks, and I have decided to make a couple sets of these shirts for us. Today I put in a big order with Dharma, and as soon as it arrives, I'll be starting this project. I ordered the starter kit that supposed to make 20 shirts (I know it won't do nearly that many), some extra bottles, extra soda ash, textile wash, and a few extra dyes: deep orange, bright green, grape and better black.

I have done a fair amount of tie-dye in the past, but always with the Tulip Kits in the past. I've done shirts a bunch for my kids, but mostly I do fabric yardage in a wide width and use the resulting fun fabric as quilt backs The Tulip usually ends up more pastel-y, so I am hoping that the Dharma fiber reactive dyes will result in brighter colors.

I've just got to find the mickey head image and print that out, then I'll be ready to go as soon as my goody box arrives.

I use Tulip most of the time, as well. On page 161 of this thread, is a template, post number 2414.
