Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Yeah, that has to be it. I bought the Jacquard kit in the 1st post, but then added the other idye colors. I guess I'll just have to do the dharma dyes!

Oh bummer! Well, at least you know now that it wasn't you, it was the wrong dye. :guilty:

I guess it just gives me an excuse to try again! LOL this time I think I have to do it in my bathroom, I better be extra careful. LOL I can just see myself in the empty bathtub with my shower curtain closed so I don't get dye on anything. We made a *mess* last time.
(Stupid Ivory carpets... whose bright idea was it to put white carpets in an apartment?!!)

LOL! How funny! OMG! Ivory carpet, yikes. You can do it in your laundry room or outdoors if you have space and the weather is good.

Another tip, the dye 'cures' faster in warm conditions, keep them in a warm room, like your laundry room, garage etc.

I think our weather is going to be wet, cool, and rainy for the next few days. Omg if I had a garage-- I'd have a craft studio!

Laundry room wouldn't be a bad idea, I could clean that up fairly easily. Then it'd be easy to just throw them in the wash. Hmmm.

We're having the same, rain and more rain. :( Yep! The laundry room is perfect if you don't have a garage or craft room.

I hope this doesn't come out wrong...I think it's great that there are some of you who do this "professionally" and help everyone out with tips and ideas, etc. If it wasn't for you guys I wouldn't have be brave enough to try this. HOWEVER, not everyone can afford to order and ship in the expensive dye or have access to the medium expensive craft store stuff.

I went into my project as a way to do cheap matching shirts for 19 people at WDW. I bought the 5 packs of 100% cotton shirts, the Dylon & RIT dyes from Wal-mart. I do have a Michael's in the nearby large city so was able to get some soda ash. I washed my shirts without fabric softener, soaked them in the soda ash for 20-30 minutes each.

I do not use the full instructions on the dyes, since I wasn't using the dye as the instructions implied. I mixed each full package of RIT with 2 gallons of very hot water. The Dylon I mixed each packet with 4 cups of warm water. I did add the small amount of salt recommended on the packages, because I didn't know if it was important or not. Then I filled my little bottles (I used the bottles from the housewares section of wal-mart for $1 each - I think they are for vinger & oil, ketchup, etc.) and dyed like crazy. I did know I was using "weaker" dye, so I let them sit in there plastic wrap for 48 hrs.

And my shirts turned out quite well, as did those of my 2 sisters who were doing some also. Yes, when I did the first wash they faded a little. But not an insane amount. And now we will wear them on our trip. And after that I will wash them again and maybe they will fade some more, I don't know. But as shirts for a specific trip or event they will do excellectly. If we can wear them again, GREAT! If not, no big deal. Maybe I dye the same ones again next time. ;)

I will say that the RIT did fade a little more than the Dylon. So if I do it again, I'll either avoid the RIT (I had to get it this time because my store was out of red & green in the Dylon) or try it again using less water.

Here's a just a few of my shirts (I've posted in this thread before but god knows I won't find that post again, LOL):

I hope this helps someone who might want to try without having to order fancy stuff. :)

Again, I don't want this to come across harshly to anyone, I just want people to realize there ARE options. If I had the recent rash of negative and/or "Dharma only" posts I wouldn't have bothered to even try this project. And I would have missed out on some great shirts.

I've been reading through this thread and the other thread and I love all of the tips, instructions, advice etc. I'm getting ready to order from Dharma...I'm so glad I read through everything first though. I really like the bright shirts - so I want my first attempt to be a success!

Thanks so much for all of the helpful advice. I love this thread!!!

Pixie - Two questions for ya:

1 - Have you done a hoodie yet? If so, was it much harder than a t-shirt?

2- Do you think a football shape would work as well as the Mickey head?

My oldest is playing JV football this year and I was thinking of making an attempt at a spiral tie dye with a football instead of the Mickey head. Just not sure if it'd work. His school colors are purple and gold so I was thinking of either a gold football and just purple for the swirl or purple football with gold & purple swirl (and possibly having to use a bleach pen around the football in either case)

I would think a hoodie would work , I would probably spiral the hood separately.

A football shape should work with the same principal, I think the trick is to not do something too intricate. As you said, you could use the bleach pen, add the thread marks from the football with the pen to make it more football-like.

My high school was purple and gold also :)

Hi there,

Well I got a couple of them for my DD's but I just didn't have the time, I am working on them as we speak, older DD wants a shirt and a hoodie for her football game tomorrow, she wants to :cheer2: cheer her friend who plays for her high school team, let see how that would turn  I will update you on that for sure.

Yes, of course you can make your football shape, you can do the same steps but instead of the mickey ears you do the football shape and you can use resist for the lines too, I'll try something similar with DD's hoodie, she wants also the player number and the name on the front, oh lord help me  but yes, we can do the bleach pen to do the lines and the colors your mentioned are great idea too.

New project girls, these are great for anyone, any age, any size, and they look cool, many colors to play with, characters, even non disney if you like, :yay: My little nephew is a big time Lighting McQueen fan and I am making him a pair with a shirt for his birthday  he is only 2 so little ones would be even more cute. then halloween, love halloweeny stuff

Check them out....( got more pics in my album)

All of these shirts were done with RIT Dye. they have been washed and faded a little, but I am still very happy with the outcome. Esp for the price if the dye. I'll be putting an iron-on on the pink and green one!!! So, if you don't want to spend alot of money that is an option for you.
