Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

I don't know if Tide to go has any bleach in it or not?

And you know what? I can't tell from the packaging at all. Now that I know what you've used, I'm going to see if I can find it somewhere else like a drug store or the grocery store. Thanks!

I think I saw somewhere in the 74 pages of information that someone uses plastic store bags instead of the plastic wrap. Can someone confirm or deny that this will work? I dred the idea of using plastic wrap for these projects. As far as I am concerned that stuff is evil. I do have some plastic wrap if ya'll say it is the best/only way to go.

My only concern with you not using plastic wrap would be the integrity of the dye on the Mickey head. You know what I mean? I would worry that if I wasn't careful, all the dye would be sort of sloshy in a ziploc, but maybe someone who's used it has a better idea.

Alright, here's my results so far.

If you'll notice, the more saturated ones are my second round of shirts. I'm currently working on the red/blue tank (which is mine) to see if I can get a more defined Mickey head. It's so tough without the bleach pen, but I'm giving it a whirl. I can always make more, right?

The only question I have for everyone is, notice on the tank tops...and some of the shirts, how there a white blotches or lighter blotches in the Mickey head. Any idea why that's happening?

Use the plastic wrap or sandwich bags to wrap the Mickey Head, so it doesn't bleed color over the rest of the shirt and vice versa. I use the regular sandwich bags (not zipper bags.) I just turn the bag inside out over my hand then surround the mickey head with my hand and flip the bag, then rubberband.

You can use the plastic grocery bags when you "incubate" your shirts for the 24 hours--1 shirt per bag, tied or closed with a twist tie. Just make sure the grocery bags don't have any small holes, or you could drip dye all over the place! I will often place the individual grocery bags inside a larger garbage bag or on a drop cloth just in case.

Oooohhh.... have you tried washing with the glitter on yet? That sounds like an addition I need to my little princess outfits! I saw those while I was there yesterday (mine are still 1.99), and thought- these would be awesome if they stayed in the wash! So let us know! I also saw the tulip spray, like for stencils, and think it might be an easy way to get MM heads on, but was not sure how well they washed!

I have not washed the glitter spray yet. I am still trying to decide on a design. But my tester shirt needs to be heat set, then I'll throw it in the wash, just to be sure the colors won't run. It might be a few days. I hope the glitter doesn't come off in the wash, I really like the look of it.

Here are the 2 practice ones I made! I think they definitely look good enough to wear. I want to make one with girly pinks, purples, and turqoise for me next! I couldn't have done it without all the great details & directions here!

I have used the very corner of ziplock bags before- I just cut them off, wrap the Mickey Heads in them, and the band them, it works good to!

Yeah you dont want too much excess sloshing around in there or it will bleed into your second color!

They look great!

Yeah, you could always trace your MM head, and go in with a paint brush and fill it in with a darker blue! I have done that several times with great results! Just make sure you dont have too much dye on your brush or it will bleed.

Sometimes the little folds in the ears get stuck where you band, just be sure they are all pulled out before you dye!

Oh! I meant to add I lay a trash bag down, and use gallon ziplock bags for them to process in so I know they will be air tight. If you are using a fiber reactive dye (like jaquard or dharma dyes) they need to stay wet the whole 24 hours for the chemicals to work!

Okay i made mine shirts, and they actually look okay, i just need to take a picture of them.I started to make mine into a halter top but the needle on my machine broke so will have to wait till i can get to Joann's. I will have to make my moms over one of the ears is bigger than the other and looks a little strange on, so on the plus side she has a new exercise shirt.

Has anyone tried doing a regular tie dye shirt (no sewing of a mickey head), and then bleaching out the outline of the mickey head? I've got a short period of time to try to do all our t-shirts for our upcoming trip while my girls are at camp, and was thinking for the tie dyes I was hoping to make, maybe I could cut that corner. I know it wouldn't have the contrasting color of the mickey head, but I was just wondering whether that might be something that could work.

Any thoughts? TIA!

I have seen some people do a swirly Mickey head using a bleach pen, and that seems to be a lot faster than sewing a lot of MM heads! I tried to find a pic for you-- I know it is SOMEWHERE on this thread! hahahaha!

I love the bright blue Mickey Heads, they really stand out!!

Not sure about the spots on the MHs. It almost looks like part of the MH got caught up under the rubber bands maybe?? Did you pre-wash the shirts to get out all waxes, oils, sizing? It almost looks like there was a spot of something that just caused the dye to resist.

I wondered if that was the issue. I had a tough time making sure it was all out, so that could be it.

Thank you! The kit I used is Jacquard, I think, from AC Moore. I had a 40% off coupon so that was nice.

Now that you and Tinker have mentioned, I'm wondering if part was caught under the rubber bands. I did pre-wash and shrink the shirts, so there shouldn't be anything on them.

Oddly enough though, it didn't happen on my husband's shirt. And he did his colors on his own, so maybe I should have him do the Mickey heads!

I just reposted a picture of the bleached spiral Mickey Head last week or so back on page 67. Not my shirt, it is Marshay's I think? I think you could easily dye a center section a certain color, than bleach out a MH.

You might save a bit of time doing Mickey Heads with the bleach pen, and if you're short on time, the results might be a little more predictable than trying to get a good dyed Mickey Head. I'd recommend doing only a couple at a time, as bleach can weaken the cotton fibers if left on too long, and you need to really rinse the bleach pen out well.

Okay, my fingers are yellow and blue so I must have something going on. I am slightly miffed. The dye kit I got from Michaels seems to have been tampered with. It was supposed to have 5 colors so I assumed there would be 5 bottles in there, but there was only 4 even though there are 5 packets of additional color. I guess it is my own fault for not checking it out more when I saw how banged up the box was. I will wash them out tomorrow before we head out for the day.
