Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

Irish dancer, I love your shirts! What kind of tanks did you use? You Mickeys came out great!

Thanks Tinker. The girls tanks are both from Walmart. The bigger one is from the Jr. dept and the smaller one is from kids. They are both ribbed.

I'm so glad I did tanks as the temps earlier in June were sweltering. Poor DS was very sweaty in his t-shirt but I couldn't find any good boys tanks that were 100%cotton and plain white.

I know, the only ones I can find for my DS3, are "wife beaters" lol, but we are going at the end of Aug- first of Sept, and he will burn up if I put him in a T! I found DBF's at Old Navy for $5! I just love how the dye does on the ribbed shirts, soooo bright and colorful!

I know I'm late in getting these posted but I made them literally right before we left on our trip June 12th so here goes:

http://They were really fun to make and I'm sure we'll do it again. Our next trip will probably be in 2010 around the holidays so maybe green/red combo.[/QUOTE]

Irish Dancer,

These turned out great! They girls look so cute in them with Tink! I love the purple MH's.

Christmas color combo is on my list, but waaayyy down, after red/white/blue, halloween, and some mix of mostly dark greens.

Hi, everyone,

Michaels is apparently going to reset the t-shirt crafting aisle soon, because it is decimated, and LOTS of things are on clearance, but lots of pegs are already empty.

My newest purchase is a small spray bottle of DecoFabric Spray by MarvyUchida for $0.99. It is very fine glitter in a very watery permanent fabric paint base. You have to shake it to keep the glitter suspended. They only have the silver at my Michaels, but I realize I have a bottle of a coppery color at home that I've had for years and never used.

It would add just a little bit of bling to your shirts, but in a much more subtle way than rhinestones or glitter glue. It comes in a spray bottle, but the pump broke on mine and I used a paintbrush to add some glittery streaks.

I did not get this to use on my tie dyes, though. I'm currently working on another type of shirt, and will eventually post pics if they turn out worth anything.

Sounds neat, thanks for the tip!

Oooohhh.... :lovestruc have you tried washing with the glitter on yet? That sounds like an addition I need to my little princess outfits! I saw those while I was there yesterday (mine are still 1.99), and thought- these would be awesome if they stayed in the wash! So let us know! I also saw the tulip spray, like for stencils, and think it might be an easy way to get MM heads on, but was not sure how well they washed!

I should be in town at the end of July! LOL about the 1.50 shirts- good point, it took me a few tries before I felt like I had it down! They can be night shirts lol!

Yeah, it's hard to find them for a good price, but the colors look great on them! I am sooo ready to unwrap these in my kitchen.. they are just BEGGING me to unwrap them! haha! Gotta make myself wait it out!

Michaels has their shirts for $2.50 each this week -- I usually stock up on them when they're $2. But I LOVE the Michaels shirts for dyes and paints.

Alicia, that's exactly right! I usually do a Mickey head on each side, and then lift each side and band down. I usually dont band all of the way to the bottom, just until I hit the seams of the sides of the shirts. Then I just squite the dye on the bottom part. I have done the spiral design before as well, but for me, the circles are a much easier method! Just be sure you make your bands super tight, especially around the Mickey Shapes!

Are you using resist or the floss method? Your mickey heads are really nice and formed!

I use floss- I'm old school ;) lol! I like the Michaels shirts for painting, but since I use fiber reactive dyes, they don't yield a good color for me!

Some of you guys may want to check out this site if you are ordering for the whole family- it is jiffyshirts.com . They have 100% cotton shirts for as low as $2- and lots of neat accessories to!

Hmmm. I'm glad you said that. I thought the last batch of white t-shirts I bought from Michaels were 100% cotton, but now I'll need to recheck before I dye shirts for our next cruise!

Oh my gosh you go soon!!! Yeah, last time I checked they switched to a 50/50 blend, which I think is weird bc it is like they want to sabatoge your tie dye! hahahahaha! Anyway, that has your shirts to you in 3 days, and they have tons and tons of cute T's, I order from them quite a bit when my local warehouse is out of a size (for example- I can never find 2XL and 3XL here).

Thanks! I wonder if I got old shirts last time? Because the DIS green ones I bought are definitely 100% cotton. I'll make sure to check the big batch of white ones I bought on Sunday. :(

After seeing your shirts, I think I need to suck it up and try the floss method. I've had really good resist results, but yours are super crisp.

Thank you!! I had one bad experience with resist, and ruined a batch of shirts (could not get the resist to come OFF the shirt!)- so I decided to stick with floss! If you look I posted my template a few pages back, and just make sure you do them super tight! I have also found it helps to wrap the MM heads in cling wrap to keep other colors from dripping on them!

Michaels is really good about refunds if you decide to take them back- I hope you got some 100% cotton ones though so you dont have the hassel!

Okay oh experienced ones, this is a stupid question, but did you just use a regular pencil to trace Mickey onto the shirt? I just tried using one of my sewing pencils and I couldn't get it to show up (for some reason I am thinking I have this problem every time I try and use the thing). Squinting semi cross-eyed and tilting my head just so, I was able to see most of the lines, but would love to be able to see the next one easier. Oh and another thing, how small of a stitch should it be, and does it matter that I missed the step that said to make sure you stitch just to the outside of it (whoops)?

Hey Jenn! I use a washable marker! It washes right about but it is bright when I use it, so I dont miss anything! I sew right on the line, so I think you are ok on your MM shape!

I made my first two the other day and they turned out great! I will post pictures soon! I bought the Tulip kit from Michael's, didn't use Soda Ash (just bought some for the next batch), and I let one shirt sit for 18 hours (I couldn't take it anymore and had to see if it worked, hehe) and the second one sit for 30 something hours. They both turned out bright but the one that sat longest is noticably brighter. I bought a 3-pack of undershirts for my hubby, size 2x, and used 2 of those and was only able to do those two with the regular kit. I did use a ton of dye and only filled the bottles 3/4 of the way full for more concentrated color. I can't wait to make more! Even DH said he will wear them after seeing them! Thanks for the great idea to everyone who contributed!!!

YEA! Can't wait to see your pics! Isn't it fun!?!? It is like unwrapping a masterpeice of art every time! I love it!

Hey everyone! I'm getting ready to post pics soon, but I have a question.

When you're all talking about the bleach pens, what do you mean? When I was at WalMart today, all I could find was a Tide to Go pen. Will that work?

Thanks! :goodvibes
