Tie Dye Instructions for Spiral Mickey Shirt

I like the look of you shirts. I never thought of doing panties but i do know I hated doing my grandaughter's shorts so I don't know that I will try doing panties. :rotfl:

The panties are the ones she really 'helped' me with, it was really hard!! LOL The mickey head ended up being a blob, so I used the bleach pen to do the swirly mickey head, but the bleach bled on them so it is more like a lighter mickey head on them...lol

In case this hasnt been listed before.....

Those kids black colored plates that they serve the kids meals in that are in the shape of Mickeys Head are PERFECT to outline the shirts with!!

Great tip!!:thumbsup2

Here are my finished t-shirts. I have already rinsed them by hand and let them dry......I still need to wash them in machine and am really, really hoping that they dont fade much more.........

I am pleased with them.

Your shirts turned out very nice.

I can't wait to unwrap mine today and see how they came out! Thanks everyone for the instructions and the photos!

I made my mickey head shirt in the beginning of July for my trip towards the end of July. My mickey head turned out perfect. I wore it at Epcot and I while I noticed tons of people looking at my shirt - no one said anything!! I got more compliments and questions about my stick figure family iron on transfer shirt!! Both shirts were so cute, but I was really proud of my mickey head tie dye shirt.

Now for the sort of sad part. I washed my tie dye shirt by hand when I got home from the trip and more blue dye was coming out in the water. I rinsed it until the water was clear and laid it out to dry. The next morning I noticed that some of the blue had run onto the white around the mickey head. No other color ran - just the blue. I also used fushia, purple and green. It ran in some other spots too, but I really don't care about that. I just wanted to save my perfect mickey head. I had a really nice area of white around it and I didn't have to use the bleach pen or anything. I rinsed the shirt out again in cold water to see if I could lighten up the area where the blue had run (it's not super bad and the mickey head is still good, but the white area around the mickey head is now a very light blue in some spots) and it really didn't change much. I laid the shirt out again to dry on a clean white towel and sure enough, there was more blue on the towel again. I can't figure out why the blue keeps coming off the shirt. When I first made the shirt, I washed it in the machine with some Era and laid it out and no colors came off on the towel. Why would washing it by hand in just cold water make the blue come off now? I've thought about using the bleach pen, but I don't want to take the chance of ruining the mickey head. I feel I should just leave it along at this point. I showed the shirt to my son when he came over the other day and he said it didn't look bad.

I was just so darn proud of that mickey head shirt because after reading all the posts and seeing everyone's pictures, I couldn't believe that I actually made it and that it turned out so good!! I had never even tie dyed before!! I have another whole set of dyes, so maybe I'll try another one someday!!

So, I was able to finally get my tie dye's done. They came out so good for a first try. I didn't ned to use any bleach and added crystals around the edge since its an all girl trip. Had so much fun making them. Next time I'm going to let my DD help make some. Since this is a suprirse trip, she obviously couldn't help.

Thanks for the instructions and tips! We used the Tulip dye kits. Here are some of the shirts we made:

We're going to be posting more pictures of the process and of the shirts in our TR. :yay:

I've been lurking for a while. I am going to attempt this for our Sept trip. I am planning on doing this once school starts. Just am concerned about my sone "wanting to help" and ending up with a huge mess on my hands! (actually the mess on my hands is the least of my worries!!:rotfl2: )

Everyone's shirts are beautiful! I have enjoyed looking through this thread at everyone's masterpieces!

One question - I already have my shirts. And I will get the dye either at Michaels or Joanns. Where do I get the soda ash?
Thanks a bunch!

I've never tie dyed before but some friends are getting together for a tie dye party and I thought we would attempt micky shirts for our upcoming trip. So I looked over the instructions and printed a template and then sewed a basting stich. Only thing is I did it right on the line, not just outside the line. Do I need to undo it and sew farther out. If I keep it as is would I just end up with a smaller mickey? The party is not till next week so I have to time change things if needed. I also did not pre-wash the shirts, and i used mint floss. Is there a problem using mint floss?

Thanks,

Thanks,

I sewed my basting stitches right on the line, and the Mickeys all came out fine, so you should be okay there! :thumbsup2 I think sewing right on the line just leads to smaller Mickeys - you can check out the size of my Mickeys relative to the shirts in my pictures a few posts up. I did pre-wash the shirts and used regular waxed floss for the stitching, so I can't help with those questions.

I also stitched right on the line and I think that is part of what made mine so defined. That and really tight rubber bands. I also squeezed out some of the extra dye on the head area before wrapping them in plastic. :thumbsup2

me and DSD made our tie dye shirts for our upcoming trip and I have a question...

We followed all steps but the last step says to wrap in saran wrap and leave for XX amount of hours.. we wont get to wash them out until tomorrow when we get off of work.. Is it going to hurt anything to leave them so long before we wash them out????

The longer you can leave them (within reason) the better the colors develop. Good luck!

thank you for the quick reply.. we will definitely get them washed out as soon as we get out of work tomorrow.. My fingers are crossed that they come out great.. I'll post some pictures..

We are headed to WDW in 6 days and just did this! It was a LONG process, we used Dharma Co. products (very good quality, but lots of steps!) and we are SO pleased with our outcome! The mickey head's are perfect (we used the outline in previous pages that was suggested, it has a blue background) and the colors are so crisp, we are so excited to wear them! We dyed LOTS of stuff (I even have some tie dye panties now!) :lmao:

Tips:
-USE QUALITY DYE
-take your time, follow all the steps
-stitch your mickey well and rubberband TIGHT around your stitching
-let it sit a long time, ours sat 24 hours

Here are our Mickey outfits...

AWESOME shirts. I just finished tye dieing some also. I will post pictures later. I also used Dharma for all but 2 shirts. I got those 2 shirts at a local craft store and they turned out terrible compared to the others. I don't know why...they were all made of the same type of materials, pre-washed together, etc. etc. I have re-ordered more shirts from Dharma and I am going to do some more to replace the "cheap" shirts...I'm just not happy with them and the Dharma shirts came out so much more vibrant.

WOW THAT LOOKS SOOOOOOOO COOL!!! My DS 9 :cool1: & DS 6 :rotfl2: will totally love it, I am not an artistic person but that project looks right up my alley.
