Throwaway room (read post #2041 or #2710 before posting)

So we got back from WDW on Thanksgiving and we did do the "throwaway campsite." Not debating the ethics or anything of this system or if Disney is going to shut it down, but I wanted to let you all know how it worked for us to help answer some questions.

I didn't think to book it early enough to get the ADR bonus, so no info there. I booked a campsite for 11/20, 1 night. Our days at the parks were 11/21 - 11/25. I would have booked 11/21, but the 11/20 night was $60 vs $84. I booked it at about 3 months out.

First bonus - Despite being booked only for 1 night, we were able to book FP+ at 60 days for our entire trip. This was one of the main reasons for us as we were able to get FP+ to ensure we got to do everything that we wanted to.

Second bonus - Magic Bands. I really like the new FP+ and the convenience of having these planned ahead, but regardless, Magic Bands are SO AWESOME! I loved not having to carry around cards, worry about losing them, pull them out each time we had a FP, etc. I can't say enough about how great they are! Anyway, we planned to buy them for our family of 6, which would have cost us $78, but with the throwaway room, we saved $18 and got them with our names imprinted on the inside (slight perk, but cool nonetheless). We also were able to park free on the 21st, so save $17 more.

Third bonus - We were able to get the FP lunch for Be Our Guest. It is such a cool restaurant, good food, good value, great atmosphere. And since at the time it was FP only, it is another benefit that only onsite guests get. When we actually arrived, they were letting people sign up for standby, but it was an hour wait at 12:30.

And we actually never even set foot on the FW property. You can check in online and have the Magic Bands shipped to your home and go from there.

So anyway, that was our experience. I hope it answers some questions and helps. :cheer2:

Sounds like you had a great trip! Just to clarify: you were able to book FP for your entire trip on the exact 60 day mark? If so, that is different than others have reported.

To be a little clearer:

Were you able to book FP+ for all the days of your trip on the same day, at the 60 day mark, from check-in? Or just 60 days from each day? The latter is what is expected.

So, for the parking, do you use the Magic Bands to get entry? I'm assuming they have scanners at the entrances to the parking lots. Good to know that we can just do the online check in.

We got free parking for the length of the throwaway. I showed my print off with confirmation. I asked one CM if she could scan my band to get proof of stay but she said she was embarrassed to admit she forgot her scanner-? Anyway, it stressed me a bit, felt awkward and a part of me was relieved when we had to pay after the throwaway was over. :upsidedow

I liked having the bands, and FPs at 60 days, even tho they opened more SDMTs up a few days before our trip so I was able to get FPs for 2 days then.
I also liked the ease of scanning our band for pictures.

Truth, I changed all my original ADRs, months later, moved FPs around (except the SDMT on Dec 2nd and TSM Dec 1st) days b4 and even day of for a couple. So I am not sure the throwaway was 100% worth it, BUT it did ease my mind while planning, so there is that.:thumbsup2

Planning a return trip for MNSSHP this time staying onsite, feel I owe Disney. ;) :rotfl:

Yes, 60 days from each day. Not just 60 days for the days we were staying on property. :)

Yes They scanned my MB. :)

Just wanted to give an update that it appears that a 1 night "throw away" room does not get your FP access for your entire ticket length. We are staying onsite for 1 night before a 7 night stay at WBC. Our FP window opened the 23rd and we have 5 day tickets linked to our MDE. I was able to make FP selections for 2/21 but today 2/22 did not open up to make selections so it looks like this "loop hole" has closed.

You may not understand the loophole exactly.

The 1 night does not immediately open up a 60+length of ticket window. It opens up a 60+length of reservation window. After the reservation window, it is 60 days from date in question.

If you check in on 2/21, then yesterday, 12/23 was the opening of that window. You should have been able to make FP+ reservations for 2/21 AND 2/22 (check-in and check-out days), but no further.

Today would be sixty days from 2/22 - which was already in your window from yesterday.

TOMORROW is 60 days from 2/23 - you will be able to make FP+ reservations for 2/23, but no further.

The "loophole" is that you get 60 days from any date in question (up to a limit which is about 60 days past the check-in date) because of the throwaway room, whereas you would only have 30 days.

Oooh thanks. I think our 2 different check in dates is getting me confused because yes I did make FP selections yesterday for 2/22. I am losing my mind, thanks for straightening me out :)

Hello

I haven't been keeping up on throw away rooms. Last May, I was able to use a 1-night throw away room to book 6 days in the parks 60 days out. It sounds like that is no longer the case. If I understand correctly, now a 1-night throw away room will only get 60 days FP for check-in and check out days (so 2 days)?

I think it is 60 days prior to check-in you can make check-in/out days. Then a rolling 60days for the remainder of the trip.

So if your 1 day is a Friday, June 5, then on April 6 (60 days prior to June 5) you can make FP+s for June 5 & 6, And on April 8 you can make them for June 7, and on April 9 you can make them for June 8.

Someone please let me know if I have that correct.

Also "for the remainder of the trip": is that based on the length of your ticket that you have linked to your reservation? Or are you able to do it without linking. I am still working my way through this. We will *most likely* buy from a discount Ticket broker. Except for 2 tickets which will most likely be APs. I'm currently a planning mess.

Exactly!

Tickets need to be linked before making any FP+ reservations...

GREAT! I'm glad to know I get the rolling-60 days part. And thanks for the info about linking. What I'm still confused about:

Also "for the remainder of the trip": is that based on the length of your ticket that you have linked to your reservation?

If I have 3Day tickets can I only book 3 days worth (check-in, check-out, and the next day) of FP+s?

Yes, you can only book for the number of days on your ticket.

Thanks!

I have all these dark, murky areas of confusion over changes since my last (and many prior) trips to Disney. I can finally mark ONE area off my list of things to learn. I got this one :-)

I appreciate all the knowledge transfer around here!

I'm planning to schedule a throw away room on a Wed. I know that I can book FP+ 60-day out on Wed and Thur. But, I'm showing up on the Sunday before. Will I be able to book FP+ 60-days out for Sun, Mon, Tues, or Wed? I do have a 6 day no exp. ticket that I'm using. Or, do I have to wait and schedule those FP+ 30-days out one day at a time?

It's a rolling 30 for the days prior to your resort stay.
