Counters- When home shopping, we were prepared to buy something that required a full kitchen makeover. I had a short list of granites I really wanted. While they didn’t showcase it well in the real estate pics (looked gray), I was shocked during our walkthrough to see that it was Labrador antique granite. It was one of the granites on my short list! It looks like a grayish brown granite with black flecks until you’re on top of it. It’s peppered with these vibrant iridescent blue crystals. People entering our home sometimes question why we added a really bold blue backsplash until they look more closely at the counters. I’m guessing they got a really large piece because it’s on both kitchen countertops, the bar (which is long), a little nook area on the edge of the kitchen, and this peninsula table feature they added as an alternative to a dinette table space.
Formal dining room- Our first home was open concept in the formal living room/dining room area. I hated it so much that I held off on dining room furniture. I got that traditional formal dining room in our second house. It was very pretty, but it was cramped. This house had a formal dining room complete with built in displays and cabinets, but I preferred the formal living room area. Plus i needed room for our china cabinet. We eventually replaced the flooring to a nice dark wood to compliment the furniture and rug. There’s also plenty of room to keep the table’s onboard leaf in place. The previous owners also had hardware installed for a wall mounted tv (since it was their living room). I got a new tv as a work anniversary gift that year, so we can also have Thanksgiving day football and holiday movies on in the background during our most festive meals in that room.
Unique features- The house is 50 years old, but even in the earlier days of master planned communities, there were model homes. We’ve been informed that ours was one of the models, so we have some interesting add ons and features not found in many other houses in our town. The closet space is horrible and the bathrooms are small (common in older houses), but we have all kinds of random little storage and built ins within the kitchen, a Harry Potter style nook under our staircase, and my favorite…there’s a little cutout cabinet style door on the wall of the upstairs hall bathroom that opens into the side of the linen closet. So, if you need an extra towel or washcloth, you can just reach in the closet from this side access.
