Your DH sounds like a keeper! Please post the recipe.

I guess I haven't been retired long enough (this is my first year)---I hear weather forcast calling for ice starting 3amish. Of course, the brain automatically kicks in with the debate-2hr delay or no school? Next thought: the weatherman's called for snow we didn't get this year so maybe nothing. Next thought: It doesn't matter to me. I don't have to go anywhere! Then my caring side comes out and says but it sure sounds like the teachers could use a few extra hours break after talking to several on Thurs. So upon going to bed, I cannot sleep, thinking about ice! The next thing I know, it's 10 of 5. I turn on tv thinking Channel 8 should be putting the delays up! Rats---nothing for Lancaster Co. I calm down...remembering it doesn't matter to me...I don't have to go anywhere. Go to bathroom...look out...it looks wet but icey? Turn off tv for maybe 5 min. I have to know so turn it back on...YES! Donegal! and sure enough...2 hr delay Etown!!! I was so excited I could not go back to sleep!
I guess I'll never be retired long enough to not enjoy the thrill of a 2 hr delay...or better yet...a snow day!
Maybe some of you mom's don't like them but I sure did!

:rotfl2: I love them!!! Better yet is when you know the night before:woohoo: .

Morning TKers! We got hit pretty hard with the sleet/ice mix today, everything is cancelled, and no, I didn't get to the grocery last night to stock up on eggs and milk. Instead, I got Mexican last night and have some yummy left overs. But how long will that last me?

Oh! Lost was so good last night. I've been racking my brain trying to figure out who the other two member of the "Oceanic 6" were. I too enjoyed the catch-up episode, so I was all primed when the new episode came on afterward.

I do hope Audisfan isn't affected by the nasty weather.

I still check if school is cancelled too. I don't know why. Just good to know.

I must be in the Stone Ages, I don't have TiVo either. But I like commercials! There's a Pedigree Dog Adoption one that makes me tear up everytime I watch it. Also, I have this tendency to do stuff during that time, whether it be putting laundry in the dryer, checking on my baking, or just getting up and running around. I had read once that if you got up and exercised during the commercials of a one hour show, you'd get the recommended 22 minutes of activity. I just walk in place or do situps. Its not as painful that way. But then again, I don't think it really works, at least, I haven't noticed for me.

QVC is channel 317 on my DirecTv. I watch it too! Mostly I salivate when they have the gourmet foods. I've always been tempted to order. I did get my amazing shower head and my DVD recorder from there. Its dangerous, but the lighting is amazing on there! :thumbsup2

Please post the recipe! I've never met a Mac and Cheese I didn't like.

Good day everyone! Stay safe and warm and if you have a school day with the little ones, enjoy!

hello again.

it's a dreary rainy day here, too. icy cold rain, yuck!

i'd love to get that recipe, too, bopsmom. we ALL love mac n cheese over here. i don't know who loves it more, my kids or my husband!

just thought i'd give ONE more great thing about tivo/dvr!
you can put the words disney world in on your wish list, and it records EVERYTHING regarding wdw!!!

ok that's the last i'll say about it....yeah right!:hippie:

forgot to say, i do the same thing! more because i'm excited it will snow! and my kids aren't even at the age that they would get a snow day! we just love the snow!

this reminds me of the time when i was pregnant with my DD. my husband was traveling a LOT. so he was away in january and we were set to get a ton of snow. so my brother stayed over my house, to shovel for me (how sweet, i know). now he's an elementary teacher. so we're watching the news the night before, and his school announces that it will be closed even before it starts snowing!! he was jumping around like a 7-year-old boy!! it was so cute!

Thanks for the lighting compliments! I feel so loved!

Bopsmom, definitely post that recipe please! We're back in the woods, and, although we don't have nearly the trouble you do, we have on occasion been out for multiple days. A recipe that didn't involve opening the fridge and risking spoiling all the food would be great. (I keep threatening to get a generator.)

Also, for anyone who read my late night ranting. I found the cartoon I was thinking of. It was Kidd Video and it was about a teen band that was captured and taken to the "Flipside" (where they subsequently became cartoons instead of live action.) Thanks crazy '80s for some really wacky shows!

Have a good day everyone, and, if you're in the Northeast, be careful out there. Its icy, cold and overall gross.:cold:

Awww. Magsnden, that really is a sweet story about your brother. And a teacher too! What a guy.

I remember Kidd Video! The evil guy in the show was called the Master Blaster. How funny!

Does anyone remember Jem? She was supposed to be a rock star who could transform into something...she had a rival band called the Misfits and a cute boyfriend with blue hair named Rio.

I went to ComiCon in San Diego years ago and on the selling floor they had all these toys from my childhood! It was so great to see them again. I wish I had taken better care of my toys when I was little. Those things would be worth a fortune now!

Its getting super nasty outside now. I can hear the "tinkle tinkle" of the sleet as it hits the windows.

Was told by Shutterfly to call back if I don't receive the pictures by Monday. So what's the use of Priority Mail if it takes a week? It usually takes 2-3 days, depending on distance. I think they really didn't send it by priority, they just say they do.

Addendum: I fully apologize to Shuttefly's services and to the United States Postal Service. The pictures just arrived.

.

So glad you remember too! Check out youtube.com. I found some video clips of it. I was laughing my bum off. (too bad you can't actually do that...)

Of course I remember Jem. In fact, that's one of those random bits of info I was talking about that I should probably try to get rid of to make room for "real" stuff... I know the whole theme song!

All of the sudden I have to go to the bathroom.:lmao:
I am ready to compare Lost notes. Can't understand who are the "good guys" and who are the "bad guys". So frustrating.
Oh and yes.... I also like Antiques Roadshow!!!:thumbsup2 Don't get to see that one as much.

As a retired elementary librarian, one of my goals was to read books longer than 32 pages. I guess a lot of you Mommies out there feel the same.

I got my required milk for the ice storm we may (or may not) get tomorrow morning.

As a elementary teacher and mom, I feel the same way. I finally started reading books w/o pictures this summer. I've expanded my book list beyond "If you Give a Mouse a Cookie."

And I agree...why the big stock up of milk, bread and eggs? It snowed here last night - about 10 inches. We're running out of road salt now and they are using sand. Not as effective for driving. Lots of people in ditches today. :sad2:

Hey Guys
I have a great recipe for "emergency use" that is made with totally non-perishable items!:thumbsup2 It is a commerical Mac n' Cheese recipe a cafeteria chain (Luby's) uses-it is DD favorite food(has been since she could eat solid food) I got the recipe from them. It uses powered milk, velveta/american cheese, boiling water and pasta. It is really, really good too.Actually, the cheese/milk base of the recipe lends itself to great casseroles.
I'll post it if anyone wants it

Love to get the recipe. Thanks!

I have now joined a Little House on the Prarie thread. I am a closet Little House nerd. I just love that show. Have since I was a kid. (Yes I am old enough to have seen this show when it was out.) Am trying to collect the series since they do not show reruns on regular tv.
Oh lighttech - I finally understand why your sign-on name is. I told you I am a little slow.

No worries! Yup. For those of you who missed the conversation... I am a LIGHTing TECHnician. (A designer actually.) I work for QVC. (As well as some small theatres now and then.) Theatre is my first love, but there's no steady work doing that, and now that I have to be a responsible adult, wife and mommy, QVC is a much better option. Plus, I still get to do lighting design every day, which not a lot of people who studied my field can say. I consider myself pretty blessed.

I grew up in So Cal, didn't see falling snow until my 20s (the first set  ) so I get all excited if it snows here. :yay:

hey everyone, i don't really have time. my daughter's downstairs saying " mommy come down. i'm huuungry". so i guess i have to feed her!

got really yucky here too. freezing rain is pelting the windows.

i'm sorry i don't remember flipside. but who out there remembers "josie and the pussycats"? i loved that show!

funny, magikitty, about shutterfly!! it's terrible, though, when you're waiting for the pictures. i know.

but what i really had to tell you all is this. my husband is a huge little house fan!!! he remembers all the episodes and can't believe i was not really into that show. i will say, in his defense if there is any, he grew up in a house full of girls. 4 girls, 2 boys. also they always had to give up television for lent, EXCEPT for that show. the poor boy was at the mercy of his sisters!

i thought you'd all enjoy that funny info!

ok better feed the kids before they starve.

OK, caught up to page 113. I'll have to do the rest later. DH should be out tonight, so maybe I'll sneak in some laptop time later.

Just wanted to say "hi."

Oh, and here's a cute moment for the mommy crowd. DS told me yesterday that he "loves pizza" but he "especially loves" me. I feel so honored! Outranking pizza is a pretty big deal for an almost 3 yr old! :rotfl: :lmao:

I love kids perspectives on the world.

Think there's any chance this will roll over into the teen years?

OMG that is SO SWEET!!! I miss mine being little. :lovestruc Oh and yes, sometimes it rolls over in to the teen years..."Mom, you are the best....will you make me some Ice Cream." or "you are the best Mom of all my friends....do you have 20.00?"

Awww. Magsnden, that really is a sweet story about your brother. And a teacher too! What a guy.

Magsden, I was trying to find your story but can't find it.

I Loved Josie and the pussycats!!!!!

Hope everyone is doing good. I have been getting so behind on everyone! Both work and home have been crazy!!! Sorry to hear about all the snow and ice. :scared1: . Somehow we got lucky and got the "warm side" it is 70ish today and 60's for the weekend...don't worry, it won't last.

I think you have the cooles job EVER!! Didn't QVC use to be in Chesapeake Va?

.

Thanks.
Nope. QVC has always been in PA, just outside of Philadelphia, but, I think we have a customer service call center there (or a distribution center, I can't remember). So, I'm sure there's signs for it, etc.

:wave2: guys

lighttech,
I just wanted to pass along what I do to keep things from spoiling when the power goes out. Before the hurricane season, I start saving and cleaning milk jugs.I fill them with water and put them in the bottom of my deep freeze. This way it works better since we only keep it about 1/2 full during the summertime(avoid spoilage). You can also just use jugs of bottled water, but we recycle here.:hippie:

For the Fridge/Freezers I fill 1 gallon ziploc bags with water and freeze flat. you can stack them after they are solid. These will keep your fridge/freezer cold, they are portable. We used 2 of the ziplocs in the Igloo when we evacuated(6 hours the car!). They kept 1 gallon of milk and 1 12pac of soda cold for 12 hours.

This techinique gives us our gallons of water needed (our pumps go out) and ice too!

If we don't get a storm that year-like we didn't this year(that you God) I take the gallon jugs and toss them in the pool and let the kids play with them. Our pool water actually gets into the 90degree temps in late summer here and they love having their own block of ice to swim with.

Love to get the recipe. Thanks!

I am almost embarrased to give a recipe that uses Velveta cheese to someone from WI-I still consider ya'll the cheese state, despite what those :cool2: CA cows say:rotfl:

Here is the recipe:.

Luby's MacN'Cheese
The original says to cook the pasta until soft, but that is really a personal preference.
8 ounces (2cups) dry elbow macaroni
4 tablespoons nonfat dry milk
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon butter or margarine, melted (you can use oil)
12 ounces (3 cups) shredded *American cheese, divided or Small cubes of Velveta
1/4teaspoon kosher salt
1 1/4 cup boiling water

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a baking dish (the med/lg rectangular dish9x12x2 I think).
Cook the macaroni according to package directions. Drain.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the dry milk, flour and butter/oil. Whisking constantly, gradually stir in boiling water-
Make sure it's really boiling if using cubes of velveta; a few small lumps will melt later
Add 1 cup cheese and continue whisking until smooth and creamy, 2 to 3
minutes.
Fold in macaroni, 1 more cup of cheese and the salt.
Transfer to the prepared baking dish and cover with foil.
Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until the sauce in the center of the casserole is thick and creamy.
Remove the foil and sprinkle the macaroni with the remaining 1 cup cheese(chop up the velveta into tiny pieces).
Return to the oven and bake until the cheese melts.

*Borden makes a shredded american cheese
Makes 6 servings.

Variations:
Tuna/Chicken/Turkey Casserole
I follow this recipe but change the pasta to wide noodles or other pasta; add some dehydrated onion, celery flakes when mixing, then at the end add in 1 can drained tuna, 1/2 a can or 3/4 cup frozen green peas.
Add crushed up chips to the cheese that you use for topping at the end of baking. It make a really yummy tuna casserole.
You can even change the tuna to cooked turkey or chicken.

Burger Mac
Follow Mac and Cheese recipe
Fold in Browned Ground Beef or Turkey before putting into baking dish.

Taco Mac
Add taco seasoning when browing meat for Burger Mac recipe.

If anyone makes up another variation let me know!:thumbsup2

:goodvibes
Gotta go, DH is home:woohoo:

I have a question! Does it have to be dry milk? (I'm talking about the Mac and Cheese recipe) Don't have any in the pantry and by the looks of it outside, won't be getting out anytime soon. And today would be perfect to have mac and cheese baking in the oven. Yummy. Thanks for posting the recipe!

Thanks, but the baby is my little cousin, but I did try to kidnap her and make her my own.

I loved Josie and the Pussycats, but only the episodes when they were in space. And I always liked Alexander more than Alan. Was a geek lover from the beginning.

My BF loves Little House too! He still watches the reruns on the Hallmark channel. But then again, he loves "classic" television in general: The Andy Griffith show, Leave it to Beaver, I dream of Jeannie. He had a lot of surgeries as a child and spent his time watching reruns during the day. He's presently upset that TvLand is showing reruns of Just Shoot Me. He has deemed it unworthy.

They have Little House Days somewhere in Minnesota near where some of my friends live. I'd love to go. Where do you get the DVD sets of the show? It was one of the few that I was allowed to watch (when my parents were around).

I wasn't allowed to watch Facts of Life because of the title. My parents thought it would be too racy to watch. How funny is that now?

here you go pepper23.

forgot to say, i do the same thing! more because i'm excited it will snow! and my kids aren't even at the age that they would get a snow day! we just love the snow!

i may be biased but he really is a sweet guy. somehow he's still single. but i think he secretly enjoys his bachelorhood!

Thanks! Not a real fan of those :snooty: Cali cows. Ours are much friendlier.
Don't tell anyone. I used to love Velveta when I was little.
We have a motto in WI - If you can fry it and/or it involves cheese, we love it.

MagiKitty - My DH found the Little House series on Amazon.

Bopsmom - Thanks for the tips. We lose our water pump too, so I usually have a few jugs of water around anyway just in case. Unfortunately, we fill our freezer up pretty well... but, that in and of itself keeps down on the spoilage when we do lose power.

And, I agree. Those cows are just plain wrong. WI will always be the cheese state as far as I'm concerned.
