Thoughts on Mini-Goofy (Minnie? Goofy)

Hi all,

I'm looking for thoughts on my plan for the WDW Marathon weekend.

I've already signed up for the HM... it will be my second HM ever. I started running this January with a Couch 2 5K program, am currently in week 2 of a 10K training program and am planning to train for and run the Philadelphia Half Marathon in November.

For the WDW HM, we will be staying the whole week leading up to the HM and I'm looking for a running related activity for the rest of the family and I came up with the idea of doing the Family 5K on Friday morning with my wife and girls (ages 10 and 8 next January) as a light workout before the Saturday race.

Afterward we would go back to the resort and spend the day chilling by the pool or on resort activities (napping and/or massage a definite possibility). But definitely no park touring that day. We'd head back to Epcot for the pre-race spaghetti dinner/Illuminations package and then back and in bed by about 10PM.

Up at 3:30 or 4, breakfast and then walk to the starting corrals (we are staying at OKW).

Overall I think it would be a fun way to do my own Mini-Goofy type event and I don't think it would be too much as I would be walking most if not all of the 5K anyway.

Has anyone who is relatively new to running done this combination before?

If not, what are your thoughts.

Ted

I started running in April 2011 to lose weight and improve my fitness level, and along the way I decided to make the 2012 Disney Half my 'end goal'. I followed a modified Galloway training plan (his 3 runs/week schedule works for me). And I succeeded! I did the Family 5K and the HM and it was awesome. :goodvibes. My son and I ran the 5K and I ran the Half (my first HM ever).

You can definitely do the same! Just make sure you get your rest. The 5K starts around 6:30am so you will be getting up around 3:30am for that. I did not do the Pasta dinner event on Friday night because I wanted to get a good night's sleep on Friday night. The Half starts at 5:30am so you will be getting up around 2:30-3:00am to get dressed and prepared.

I did not do the parks on Friday, but I spent the whole afternoon/evening at Epcot after the Half. All the walking is good for your post-race recovery. You will have an amazing time!! Make sure you have FUN on the course! Disney races are a unique running experience. :thumbsup2

I've decided that I call the 5k & 1/2 Marathon combo the Pluto... It hasn't caught on yet.

I'm planning on doing this for 2013. I too began running last year and did the 1/2 Marathon as a goal this year.

C25K - B210K - Hal Higdon Novice 1/2 Marathon were the training plans I went through last year.

Both Rick and I have blogged about our experiences, Rick's blogs are better written than my randomness :)
