It's just one of many reasons that I say renting points is not as easy or trouble free as one might think just by reading these boards.

I guess if you use PayPal it will make it even more difficult.
Unbelievable story, but somehow, I believe it.

I have not rented out points that often, but when I did I accepted a check from the renter. I figure if it bounces I won't send them the reservation. And if the final payment (which should come (for me) 45 days before the actual rental dates) bounces, I would cancel the reservation.

It's the person who is renting that wants to use paypal - he/she is worried about the owner not following through on the reservation and his/her money. They see paypal as providing some level of protection for that. As the OP's story illustrates, paypal does that - sometimes unjustly at the expense of the owner!

I assume you meant you were renting, not selling your points. I have never had any issues with paypal, but I have never used it for selling, only buying. I used to have a credit card account for my dog, basket, and grooming sales, but I got rid of it, because it got too costly. Maybe Paypal is getting that way too.

Just to let you know that I was the DVC member that used paypal to transfer 275 points off jagmeister.

I only used paypal for speed as there would have been no chance I could have got a check to him and for it to clear before the 11 month window opened for my vacation. I paid using funds from my bank account and not a credit card.

I had no idea paypal could do this, as far as I am concerned I have paid paypal a lot of money that should be passed onto the seller and this has not been completed. I am awaiting paypals response to my complaint.

I wanted to send this post just to clarify that I had not attempted to chargeback these funds and from my point of view the transaction went through smoothly.

I am working with jagmeister in an attempt to sort this out with paypal.

an alternative:
i used escrow.com when transferring pts to another DISner (alas, i can't take credit for the idea . she found the service & we both investigated them, tho.........AND the transaction went perfectly: she deposited the $'s in an escrow.com acct, i transferred the pts, she verified transfer & released the funds to me. it did take a bit over a week to get the check, but worth it knowing that both sides were protected).
very easy transaction.

The Escrow.com sounds like a good idea for both and it should, in theory, provide some protection although I think most of us would have thought that paypal (Ebay) would have also provided that protection to both buyer and seller. I haven't had a problem with paypal, per se, as all my dealings have been as a buyer. I have had small problems with some seller substituting products usually of small value (less than $10) that it isn't worth the time pursuing.

Wow, sorry you are going through this. I had something similar (on a smaller scale) happen to me with paypal. They froze my account, taking back money I had paid for ebay items (causing very upset sellers to email me nasty things). It took about a month to clear it up. I swore I would never use paypal again.

But going to the bank to get money orders grew daunting after many months and eventually I started using my paypal account again. I only use it for ebay purchases (small amounts) and I always pay by credit card so I have some recourse.

Good luck to you. I know how frustrating it can be. I hope you get it all straightened out soon.

I've used PayPal for over 1,000 transactions, mostly as a seller, and all of them have gone very smoothly. But, then again, I've also stayed at BCV and experienced a courteous check-in, got the type of room I requested and had the power and water stay on the whole time. Could just be I'm lucky.

Jagmeister & psharrock – if not too late, ie not past the 30 day window, why not have Paul reverse the charge from Paypal – then the two of you can find an alternate method of settling payment – ie maybe a money order or cheque by courier. This would take the issue right out of Paypal’s hands.

I hope everyone understands that Paul had absolutely no fault in this matter. In fact, he has bent over backwards to help me when he had no obligation, legally or morally, to intervene. IMHO, his efforts are a shining example of the kinship DVC members share with each other. One of the reasons I enjoy spending time in this forum. Thanks again, Paul.

I also had a similar experience with Paypal. I had a particular business partner that I would transact back and forth with (sometimes in large amounts) and Paypal flagged and froze his account, my account AND my DH's account. It took many calls and faxing of more and more (and more....) documentation before they cleared access. Now I just use it for one-time ebay purchases.

Paypal sucks I would never use their service. A good friend of mine bought some parts for his motorcycle from a guy in NY and he paid pay pal. He recieved a box that contained no motorcycle parts so he contacted pay pal to reverse the transfer they told him that since he had recieved something they wouldn't do it.

Last summer we had a major idenity theft problem to the tune of $7000 when someone hacked into my husbands Paypal and email account. Be careful.

What happened to you is my nightmare .

Would you care to share some details and how to avoid what happened to you? I am so sorry for you and anyone having to go through ID theft.

One important thing to lookout for is an email requesting personal info like usernames and passwords. Many of these claim some urgency regarding a made-up problem with your account. They are often very convincing and look totally authentic.
