Those darned abbreviations...

I feel your pain! I've been on here a few years and STILL don't know them all. I've said the same thing: type it out first, THEN abbreviate it thoughout your message . . .

I agree. Especially some of the more obscure abbreviations. And things like SM - is that Splash or Space Mtn.?

This has bugged me for a while. I'm glad somebody spoke up.

not in my sig, but my site does have the disney acronym decoder which has well over 400 acronyms to search. it's the most complete and current list online. also has a downloadable toolbar available so you can decode acronyms while looking at any site.

Unforunately once I got used to the DIS abbreviations, I have found I automatically think of them when I see the same abbrv's outside of the DIS.

For example, during basketball season when the score for Portland shows up on the sports ticker, it is POR and I immediately think Port Orleans Riverside:confused3

But I probably am a little too obsessed with the DISboards:rolleyes1

I thought I was the only one! POR always means Port Orleans Riverside haha!

I was definitely confused at first but after spending soo much time here (lurking/posting) I've gotten pretty good at figuring them out. That's sort of always been a skill of mine, odd I know!!

I just started here... and it is already irritating!

I have the opposite problem, I speak DIS abbreviations all the time to my family/friends and they have NO idea what I am talking about. Luckily my DH and mom are starting to pick up on them though.

Yea,
I've caught on to most of them. Sometimes I have to check the list. I'm still stumped on one I saw on another thread.
Can anybody help me? What is wol:confused3

WoL = Wonders of Life pavilion

according to my list

Okay, the length of that list in CoolBeans post just points out how farfetched it is to expect to understand all of them. Sorry, I prefer writing them out -- even though I can usually read a post and figure out which activity or ride or attraction is being talked about. It's sort of like capitalizing letters properly and using punctuation. When I was in school (way back in the dark ages) you'd have gotten extra work assigned if you took shortcuts. :-)

i just checked my site... 490 acronyms - not all disney specific, but most are.

you can see how current a list is by checking for something like TSM. (or TSMM).

I just figured out wol.....it's wonder's of life.:rotfl:
I guess if you think about them long enough...and you know Disney stuff, you can figure them out.
But, I know how the op (original poster) feels.
Stay on the boards, it gets easier:flower3:

That's how I felt when I started DISing. But you can only type out "Tomorrowland Transit Authority" or "Expedition Everest" so many times before you start thinking, " 'TTA' and 'EE' are a lot easier."

With the exception of newbies, everyone knows what the TTA is, what EE is, etc. No real reason to type it out. Newbies catch on quickly. And we were all there once.

Best of luck, guys! :)

<mini thread YAGE>

I am naturally an abbreviater... Yep, probably sounds weird, but I make abbreviations for everything in my head and my friends and DH just make fun of me (though they seem to be quite entertained by it). However, you know you are addicted to the DIS when you actually are in a real-life situation and you think of one of the icons (faces) from the DIS as a response!!! For instance, a couple of weeks ago, someone told me how much a repair to their car was going to cost and I immediately thought of this: :scared1: Now you don't even have to tell me how sad that is!!!

Completely agree. I've been here for a while so I'm rarely stumped with abbreviations now ... until, that is, they came up with BLT. BLT?! Now WHO is eating a sandwich at the CR?!

argh

I am laughing with the posters who start using these abbreviations in real life -- I think even my DH knows what MK, CRT and various others are. Even worse is when I am typing an e-mail to friend or family and want to say DH or DMIL

But the funniest abbreviation I ever saw was from a woman on the DIS boards (sorry - I don't remember who) who mentioned something about herself and "DFetus" (she was pregnant at the time!). Now THAT was hilarious. :lmao:

TSM (Toy Story Mania) took a while for me to figure out. I kept reading it as TGM (Tour Guide Mike) and boy -- those posts weren't making ANY sense!

Fun thread! :thumbsup2

It con be confusing because some have the same abbreviation. Space Mt and Splash Mt and Small World both have use SM. Then Small Wrld has another one, iasm. So most are easy if you read the first post and you know what context they are being used.

Some common ones:
TSM - Toy Story Mania
SM - Splash Mt/Space Mt/Small World
iasm - it's a small world
PP - Peter Pan
MPM - Mickey's Philhar Magic
ToT - Tower of Terror
RnRC - Rockin' Rollercoaster

? i've never seen IASW referred to as IASM or SM.
