I'm fairly new to these boards, and I admit, I'm addicted, but what is up with ALL the abbreviations!? It can take me twice as long to read a thread just because I'm stumped on some of the abbreviations!! I like to think I'm no dummy, but I do have to scratch my head and wonder about a bunch of them. Is it really that hard to type out what you're referring to once, and then abbreviate after that??? :surfweb:

I feel your pain! I've been on here a few years and STILL don't know them all. I've said the same thing: type it out first, THEN abbreviate it thoughout your message . . .

I agree about all the letters! I try to type out my responses and rarely use the abbreviations even for the parks, and those are fairly obvious.
9 times out of 10 I know what someone is referring to, but when the event requires 5 or 6 letters, I think it's getting ridiculous. :-) But then I'm old too!

You do get used to them after a while. But you can tell by my registration date that I'm an "oldie." ;) I even put a couple of the abbreviations on my license plate once: BWV DVC :goodvibes Another DISer saw me and we ended up having a good chat!

I've been speaking in abbreviations since I was a kid, having nothing to do with texting or computer typing, just lazy I guess! So it didn't take me long to catch on! ;)

You know what is even worse........ when you talk about WDW using abbreviations.

Luckily DH and our WDW fan friends know what I am talking about most of the time.

Unforunately once I got used to the DIS abbreviations, I have found I automatically think of them when I see the same abbrv's outside of the DIS.

For example, during basketball season when the score for Portland shows up on the sports ticker, it is POR and I immediately think Port Orleans Riverside:confused3

But I probably am a little too obsessed with the DISboards:rolleyes1

This is cracking me up! I admit I still have some problems thinking about what the words are and sometimes I have to sound it out, but DH and I do use the abbr. in real life!

We were eating at a resturant in Hershey this past summer and we were talking about our upcoming trip. DD said, "when are we going to WDW" and DH asked, "Do you think we should stay at AKV, SSR or OKW". This couple next to us overheard our conversation and asked us if we were talking about Disney World! We struck up a conversation and it turns out they post on intercot but not on Dis. It was quite amusing.

Cute thread :cutie:

When I first began posting here it took me a little while to catch on to all the abbreviations. Now, I don't have any trouble. Every now and then there's a rare one I've never seen, but after a few others post, I figure it out.

I also have used the abbreviations in regular speak. My family looks at me like I'm crazy. I have to remind myself that they don't talk here. :rotfl:

I pretty frequently google 'disboards abbreviations' to find this list and allow me to figure out what is being discussed. Still, I get stumped sometimes by ones like 'ELP' which apparently doesn't mean 'Electrical Light Parade', 'Emerson, Lake, & Palmer', 'English Language Proficiency', 'Endorsed Local Provider', or 'El Paso airport'.

You get used to it after a while. So much easier, but even after all these years of being on the DIS I still get stumped once in a while.

I know what you mean. I work at my local DS and when a guest comes up to me asking me about Disney, I find it hard sometimes because once I start rambling, I find myself having to correct myself because I use the abbr. on them and they usually give me a weird look back. I even do this with my co-workers and they just kind of nod at me like they know what I am talking about, but in reality they probably do not.

Also, I too am a victim of seeing the abbr. in the outside world and think they are talking about Disney....I think it is hilarious about the Portland Scoreboard, I too would of thought that they were talking about Port Orleans Riverside. It is kind of like when I am out and about around here and see hidden Mickey's everywhere. :rotfl:

OMG!!!! You guys are having me laugh so hard that my co workers are asking me what's soo funny!!!:surfweb: :lmao: :lmao: I told them it's a DIS thing and they wouldn't understand!!!:lmao: :lmao:

But, I have to agree that it's ALOT easier to say at first what you're talking about, then use abbr. Sometimes, I'm sitting here and wondering: "What in the world are they talking about?!?!?" But, sometimes it's kinda easy to know what someone is saying like OKW, WDW, AK, MK, DHS, stuff like this. But for a looong time I didn't know what TSM, POTC, BTMRR, and some other ones were. By the way(btw), they're Toy Story Mania(TSM), Pirates of the Carribean(POTC), and Big Thunder Mountain RailRoad(BTMRR)...for those of us still confused!!!! LMAO!!!!!:dance3:

YGUTI. That's my abbreviation for the threads on abbreviations. (You get used to it.) :)

It is confusing at first. I remember DH looking at our plan and asking, "What the hell is wuh wuh tuh bam?" It took me a second, but I quickly realized that he was looking at "WWTBAM" (Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?) and told him what it was.

There are a lot of the abbreviations, but - really - YGUTI. ;) :)
