If fitting properly, thongs will not show through clothing. I don't have an issue with people wearing them with dresses/skirts as long as they conduct themselves as a lady.

ETA: Some knit dresses will show anything; I go without when I wear those

How is wearing a thong to avoid a panty line trashy? No one knows what you're wearing under your dress but you anyways. Panty lines with a dress are so tacky. I'd actually prefer to just go without underwear than spend 15 bucks on half a pair of underwear

Pray tell, OP, do you find an occasion when a thong isn't trashy (when worn under clothing)? My guess is you don't. I see no difference between wearing a thong under jeans than under a dress. So, no, I do not think it's trashy to wear a thong under a dress. If you don't like thongs, then don't wear them. But don't classify people who wear them as trashy. It's an undergarment and it's none of your business what other people wear.

Oh you'd be very suprised at how often people can tell you are wearing a thong. There was a girl at the Boardwalk last week and I knew she was wearing a thong b/c every time she walked you could see her butt kind of move above the thong line. It's almost always obvious when people are wearing white too.

If panty lines are going to be visible, then yes I think it's appropriate.
ITA!:thumbsup2

Well....I'll go ya one better. My sister doesn't wear underwear at all when she wears hose/a dress. She says they call them "pantyhose" for a reason.

I don't think it's trashy to wear a thong with a dress, but I do think they look trashy sticking up out of jeans.

That's just the point....I'm thinking with these short dresses and lots of dancing going on.....it's likely you will get to see what's under there.
I think that if you're wearing the sort of dress that allows people to see your underwear that it doesn't matter much what kind of underwear it is. If you're willing to expose that area...you probably don't much care who sees what.

as a male member of the species, i believe that thong underwear is always appropriate.

Underwear is part of the visable outfit these days. Bras and tops of underpants abound. I don't get it but I don't care either. We went braless, wore headbands vertically and jeans that had legs 3 ft wide dragging in the mud.

My husband said the same thing. ;)

I don't like when you either can see the thong showing out of the pants/jeans OR if you can see that the woman is wearing a thong through her dress or pants. :scared:

I guess I'm in the minority, I don't care about anyone's undergarments but my own. :confused3

Trashy?? God no. Appropriate? Not for teenagers. Thongs are there to get rid of panty lines, if i have a dress on, especially formal, I will definitely have on a thong. And I too wore one to my wedding but I assure you no one knew except my mother (who helped me pick it out) and my exhusband.

Not sure why it would ever be considered trashy. I think trashy is wearing a thong that is VISIBLE in jeans. That's gross.

Why is it inappropriate for a teenager to wear a thong? I initially wore them to get rid of VPL. I continue to wear them because they're comfortable. I see nothing wrong with it at all, even for a teenager.

OK, male type ramble here...Why, oh why, do you women folk make yourselves so uncomfortable just to do something that you perceive to look good. You do realize that men will accept you regardless of your appearance don't you?

Yes, I know the fashion people have drilled it into your heads that if you don't wear a thong (can't have those panty lines) or heals (must have nice looking calves) or push up bra's (can't have the girls not at attention) you will not be attractive to men (or women, sorry didn't mean to be inclusive there) and will die a lonely old woman surrounded by a hundred cats.

Trust me when I tell you the only place a man wants to see underwear, shoes or bra's is on the floor. (if you get my drift) Frankly they don't care what kind they are at that point or previous to that, for that matter.

My point...life is short, don't be uncomfortable all through it, just for vanity.

Don't assume that we do this stuff for you guys! I'm more comfy in the thong... and I like the way I feel when I wear heels and *I* think I look nice in them.

All that being said, I do agree with you. But I like to look nice for ME.

I'm not quite sure when butt floss is appropriate....I don't get the whole intentional wedgie thing.

I just don't get it either. It looks sooooo uncomfortable!

how do you know if someone is wearing a thong under the dress or not? I'd rather it be under a dress than coming out someones jeans.

I voted trashy, because I think it is trashy any time you can see it poking out of anything. I don't want to see ANYONE'S underwear, be it a young woman's (or old woman's:scared:) thong, or a man's booty sticking out over the top of his belt...Dont' get me started...
