This makes me so angry!!!

Side note - I know what could set Charley off.

He is fine with other dogs, he's had playdates, when we take walks he walks right past other (well tempramented) dogs not even batting an eye. Right next to 'em - no problem.

UNTIL - Its a dominant, 'unstable' dog. If the dog starts growling at him, or barking at him - when the owner doesnt seem to be able to get control of them and *I* am with him, he barks back. He doesnt charge them or try and take off towards them - but he doesnt like them doing it when I walk him.

Funny thing is - if he's out with my husband walking, and dogs do that he just keeps on walking by them too. Only barks at dogs that bark or pull towards him, when Im with. :confused3

And funny thing is - most the 'unstable' dogs - are generally little. The dogs flexing their muscles at Charley are the size of his arm. :lmao:

But - my whole point of this, was this.... as a powerful dog owner, I HAVE to be aware of my dog, and HAVE to know where he needs work, and be in control of him at all times.

Again - this one falls on the owner - she should be ashamed of herself.

Ill tell you if Charley ever even snapped at a child, for no reason - it would be the worst decision I'd ever have to make. :(

I don't even know why I am posting. Anyone that says anything remotely positive about pits gets torn apart on the DIS.

I'm sorry, but your post seems so antangonistic. Why?

A little girl just had her scalp ripped off and only 2/3 was able to be successfully re-attached. I think this thread is not the best place to champion the "qualities" of this breed.

Unless you are a Vet, I really don't think you are qualified to question anyone's credentials on the subject

This isn't a thread just about the attack, or a request for prayers. Many post are calling for a ban on the breed.

I don't believe you have any idea how much time and research CR has done on Pit Bulls and other "bully" breeds.
You are calling her 2nd post antagonistic? How, just because she is for education instead of mass hysteria?

As for why does it always seem to be pit bulls

If you read the comments in the second link there is a good explanation comparison of how "pit bull" isn't even a breed, but slang that includes several breeds. Typically it can mean either an American Staffordshire Terrier, or an American Pit Bull Terrier, but several breeds including bull mastiffs are usually group together by the media as "pit bulls"

Another example of the bias against "pit bulls"
There was a story last yr where it was first reported that a "pit" puppy chewed off several toes of a baby. There were cries far and loud on the DIS and elsewhere for banning the breed. However the investigation revealed that the families pet ferret was actually the one that injured the baby.
Where was the media coverage on that. Where was the outcry for the ban of ferrets?

Aside from the fact that Pit Bull or Ferret - why in the heck were 2 animals allowed to roam free around a new born baby - whom had to be screaming bloody murder as it's toes were being literally eaten - and the parents didnt hear anything?? WHat were they? Drugged up and passed out??

I wonder if they ever got charged with anything?

I'm trying to find links right now. Had to restart IE, but now looks like I might have to restart the computer. For some reason its freezing when I run a search using yahoo toolbar. Will restart and try searching another way.

I know what you mean. Sadly, it is the "unsavory" people that own most of the Pit Bulls around here. They breed them to fight or whatever. Sad, very sad.

I'm in no way saying that all people that own Pits are "trash", there just seems to be a disproportionate number of "trash pit owners" around HERE.

I agree.

For many years I had to pass a horrible Pitt bull breeder place-it made me ill-about 40 dogs on 3 foot long chains with a metal "house" (In the hot South here) on dirt-no grass-mud when it rained .-most of the time I'd go out of my way to avoid the place.

Apparently he was one of the top suppliers of fighting pitts around and -finally_ the ASPC got him shut down-almost every one of the dogs had to be destroyed.

Tethering breeds aggression. It would do that with any animal. Thats how they get them to be so nasty. :(

So awful. Im glad the ASPCA stepped in.

Aggressive behavior occurs natually in nature. You could also hand raise an alligator and 'teach' it to be gentle, but you couldnt count on it not turning on you. I very much believe this breed should be banned. How many maimed and killed people is it gonna take:confused3

only thing I can find right now is this
http://publish.portland.indymedia.org/en/2007/02/353254.shtml
altough I do seem to remember that at some point after this there was evidence that did point to the ferret. I can't find any info on the parents drug testing or anything. There isn't a link to the source, but the above link has copy/paste info that the parents each served 48 days and were give 60 days probation. sounds like a grandparent had the kids (the couple also had a 2 yr old at the time of the incident) and custody was to be determined later

Blindly? I'd venture to say I know much more about the breed, then you do.

Don't be too sure about that. You don't know nearly as much about me as you apparently think you do. I just may quite possibly know more about the breed than you.

Yeah - read my first post on this thread.

Oh Stella, you have no idea of whay you've accidentally stepped into here. It always starts with a post about how sorry they are for the victim, then rapidly slides downhill.

Keep watching...before it's over, the whole thing will somehow be not be the dog's fault at all. They may try to make it the owner's fault, or as sad as this may sound, it may even somehow become the victim's fault. Just not the dog's, never the dog's fault. :(

As for why that post seemed so antangonistic, that would be because they've learned that I, as well as a few others, always take their bait when they're trying to stir the pot.

Yanno..there is a REASON why I cross the street when I see a pit coming down the sidewalk.

I don't want to be anywhere NEAR these dogs, if I can possibly avoid it. They scare the living beejeezus outta me. :scared:

LOL...funny how you have that backwards. The bait was the blatant attacks against the breed instead of direct comments about the event.
Notice how CR first posted an article that provided even more information. Information from neighbors that the owner had problems with the dog in the past. Information that shows that the owner was acting irresponsible.

We just got a ban on pits and other big dogs here on base, it's a great thing! I really don't like pit bulls for many reasons. I feel so bad for the family :(

Just a question because I'm nosy - what other dogs do they ban? Is it all big dogs, or just some?

Scary story! Makes me angry, too.
darlak--the dogs in your avatar are adorable! What are they?

Exactly. It's amazing the lack of compassion some in the world people have.

EXACTLY!!!!
Very good analogy.

Jen in NH, My sister, who is in real estate, said there are many insurance companies who won't even insure your home if you own a put bull, rottweiler, German shepard or chow. I don't know if the mixes of these breeds are an issue as who can tell anyway what a mixed breed is sometimes?

I am sure there are responsible, informed pit owners but IMHO pit bulls should have to wear muzzles when they are off their own property, even if being walked by an owner. Any aggressive dog should be required to do so. I have seen greyhounds muzzled quite often in photos. Why not an aggressive breed?

My Irish setter has his own set of issues but being licked to death hasn't sent anyone to the hospital, yet. He could potentially knock someone over in his excitement which is a breed norm. We do take extra care around visitors for this reason and he is leashed when walked.

OMG, what a horrible story. That poor baby!

What I don't understand is why all of the posts about how great pit bulls are?? I get that people have them as pets and think they are great, but this thread was started about what a horrible story this is.
