I copied this from another website this morning:

Brokeback Mountain actress Michelle Williams has been disowned by her former school because of her role in the controversial gay cowboy romance. Williams, who attended exclusive Santa Fe Christian School in San Diego, California, has been blasted by the school's headmaster as "offensive" for acting the long-suffering wife of a homosexual ranch hand, played by Heath Ledger. Jim Hopson has branded the Oscar nominee a poor role model, and hopes his education establishment won't be linked to the film's themes. He tells the San Diego Union Tribune, "We don't want to have anything to do with her in relation to that movie. Michelle doesn't represent the values of this institution. Brokeback Mountain basically promotes a lifestyle we don't promote."

I'm not gay, but this type of attitude sickens me. For one thing, it's predjudice. Secondly, she's an actress. Good grief - Can someone please punch this guy in the head and knock some sense into him?

I'm sure she doesn't want support from people/institutions like that one. What a bunch of idiots.

:confused3 Recommending violence to combat prejudice. What does that accomplish? I may not agree with Mr. Hopson's opinions, but he is certainly entitled to hold and express those opinions without getting punched in the head. How would you like it if someone punched you in the head everytime they disagreed with you?

If I said something as assanine as what he said, I would say "Thank You."

Just because everyone is entitled to their opinion doesn't mean what they say isn't stupid. It's people like him and the remarks that he makes, that causes predjudice and violence among minorities. So hell yes - Combat violence started by others by giving it right back to them.

That's stupid!

Don't invite her to festitivities or whatever---but to "disown" her---wow, that sounds very Christian!

Didn't she play teh chick who slept around a lot on Dawson's Creek (you know--a bad girl before she came to their town). And they wait until she plays a character who's husband is gay to disown her.

I guess sleeping around is okay---but portraying the spouse of someone who had an affair (let alone homosexual relationship) is not.

Ummm....okay.

Let it be known the school was okay with the (portrayed) sleeping around.

This makes no sense at all and you are way overreacting. Combat violence with violence? :sad2:

It makes perfect sense.

You and I have 2 very different schools of thought. Sure, I believe everyone is entitled to their opinion. However, you believe that just because everyone is entitled to an opinion, that opinion can't be wrong. I don't believe that way.

Why am I overreacting? Because you don't share my beliefes? Interesting - Because I don't share your opinion, I'm overreacting. That's not hypocritical in the least bit. :rolleyes1

I'm sure Michelle's losing sleep over it. What the hell is "disowning" an alumnus anyways?? :confused3

Betcha they still send her fundraising letters, though. :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

 Remember what happens when you assume?

I don't believe that just because everyone is entitled to an opinion, that opinion can't be wrong. I believe everyone is allowed to their own opinions... period. They can also express those opinions freely... period.

I may disagree with someone else and that is ok. What I don't believe is that just because I disagree with someone or if their opinion "makes me sick," that it's ok to resort to or even suggest violence against that individual. That is overreacting. Indeed, that is the basis of terrorism. So, are you a terrorist?

Did I use the word "assume"?

Sorry, but if you can't understand the difference between making a sarcastic remark and being a terrorist, you must not be a very good judge of character.

There's a slight difference between dope slapping someone for being ignorant and being a terrorist - Wouldn't you say?

Boy, you sure do enjoy :stir:

I bet they do, too!! :rotfl:

btw, boomhauer, not to speak for T_M but I don't think he believes that all opinions are right. In fact, I KNOW he doesn't. He is, however, an vehement advocate for freedom of speech, as am I.

And everyone must have YOUR opinion otherwise they are an idiot.

Wow...

How stunning - a Christian school doesn't like a movie promoting a lifestyle they do not support. Absolutely stunning.

The school should be shut down and all of them sent to re-education centers and forced to think the right way. Which means your way, right?

PC run amok. Again.

BTW - I completely disagree with the school's position...

I didn't say that. If I did, please point it out to me.

What I said is, just because everyone's entitled to their own opinion doesn't mean their opinion is correct. Hell, I love Leave It To Beaver. Does that make it a good show, simply because I like it? Of course not.

I hate leave it to beaver, should I come punch you in the head?

By it's very definition, an opinion can't be "correct" or "incorrect" -- it's an opinion. You either agree with it or don't agree with it.

Honestly, to me, the press release by the school smacks of self-promotion. Seriously, was anyone associating the school she went to before this statement was made?

I guess I'm not then.

It seems VERY hypocritical to me to be against violence, but for freedom of speech that promotes violence.

But that's just me.

IF the school just made a statement about the movie being against their moral values, I have no problems (even if I don't agree) since I am sure there are many that agree with them. There have been many churches/groups that have come out against movies and that is their right.

I think their stance against the actress in the movie is rather funny. She is an actress, it isn't real life, they are disowning her for a movie role????

How does me liking Leave It To Beaver cause you, or anyone else harm?
