This is us..

You know, I'm not clear if he worked FOR the company or if he was PART of the company. But yeah, I'm sure there's ways around it. I've never worked for a corporate company but I've witnessed many companies, including ones that have owned the plant my husband works for skirt those pesky contract clauses. Not that Randall is the type to get dirty like that.
Yeah, I "might or might not have been" involved in something like this and I can tell you companies get down right ugly about this. When the potential to lose clients is involved companies can go for the jugular.

I loved this week's episode, I cried harder in than when William actually died. Everyone saying goodbye just did me in. When the mailman cried I just lost it!

I am so glad that Randall quit his job, it was killing him.

I agree about Mandy Moore's character, with all the great male characters in this show, the female ones just don't seem as captivating. When you play her off of Jack she just comes off less endearing.

I really hope that Jack does not die because he was driving drunk! That would be awful. He deserves a hero's death!

I do have to say on thing about Rebecca (ex boyfriend aside), people were freaking that she would be so selfish to leave her family to go on tour, then last night they tell us it's a 2 week tour LOL. Two weeks?? I think her family can live for 2 weeks without her.

I think that Randall must have discussed quitting his job with Beth between the time he told her he needed to stop by the office and before we saw him quitting. They couldn't show that without losing the impact of the scene. I can't see Randall making that decision without any input from Beth.

I'm going to hope maybe that's what happened. Even if they are well off enough that finances aren't an issue, that's a really big step to take without consulting a spouse.

Him consulting Beth about quitting isn't that big of deal to me at all. Esp since she was very unhappy with the company after the card and the pears came.

I agree, and I think Randall knows exactly how much Beth hates him working at that job. She has made many snide comments about it. Also, I think Beth understands Randall is going through something very profound and life changing by meeting, then losing, his biological dad in a two month time span. I think she knows meeting William has changed him forever and he will readjust his life.

And he helped create that company. He could easily become their competition.

I don't think they are in any financial trouble without his job. The seem very well off and Beth seems to have a job so I don't think they will be in turmoil. I think it's the opposite, Beth has been making snide remarks about his job and all the time he dedicates to it instead of being with his family. I think she will be relieved at his quitting.

I kinda though Beth was goading Randall into quitting with that insensitive "gift". It was one of those abbreviated conversations long married couples have when a topic (Randall and his work obsession) that has been talked to death before. It felt like this topic had been discussed already (or am I reading too much into it as that is what my DH and I do? LOL)

Randall and Kate (both the characters and actors who played them) really outshone everyone else this episode (for me anyway). I can't get past Sophie - or Jessie as she was known on The Walking Dead LOL.

I would agree. In my head she pretty much gave her blessing in that exchange.

I forgot to mention I really liked the scene between Kate and Randall. We don't know enough about their relationship, I'd like to see more about the two of them.

We don't know why they don't get along. We will probably find out next season. The only glimpse we got into their relationship was the scene at the pool where a bunch of Kate's friends wrote that note to her and Sofie/Sophie signed it.

On this week's episode they showed teenage Kevin and Sophie snuggling on the sofa and Kate was in the room -- she wasn't giving them the evil eye, or anything like that.

Since Sophie didn't move to California the first time Kevin moved there, I guess we shouldn't expect her to uproot her life for a movie. Wonder how long he lived in California before he cheated on her.

It would be silly for Sophie to move to LA for one movie. They only take a few months to film. I guess we will have to see if she can trust him again. Loved seeing Ron Howard. It was silly but fun.

They lost me with him quitting with no other plan in place. Yes, he needs a better work/family balance. But just up and quitting throws the family into turmoil and trades one set of problems for antother.
I agree, Ken Olin the produce did this story line on 30 Something. Then they did the story line of working for themselves and that just caused resentment, working even longer hours. I would like to see Ramdall change complete gears and find something else to do.

I totally agree...and it's not like there's baby triplets at home, they're 3 teenagers who can basically take care of themselves. No reason she can't go do something for 2 weeks. For goodness sakes my DH leaves for months and sometimes years at a time since our 3 kids were babies (I get that's an extreme situation -military, but still, I don't get the guilt that ppl. seem to be putting on her for going on tour for 2 weeks.)

Thankfully we continue to evolve in terms of expectations of men's and women's roles in the home, but I'm not surprised by this being the case more than 20 years ago.

So, I've decided that it's too obvious for it to be a drinking and driving accident. They said it would be a shock when it happens, and this is too neatly presented to us. We also heard about him teaching the kids to drive. Do you think something happens when Kate is behind the wheel? That's definitely something she'd want to block.

Edit: Though now I'm thinking that maybe they wouldn't have joked about how Randall shot out of the driveway if had something to do with Kate's driving...

I'm not sure women were really still thought of that way in the mid 90's. We weren't expected to be housewives at that time.

I do agree with you. This seems way too obvious..like just waiting for the show to drop. I hope we aren't left with a huge cliffhanger but I have a feeling we will be.

I agree with both of you...drinking and driving just seems WAY too obvious. I'm willing to bet there WILL be a cliffhanger and Jack will NOT die in a car accident. He is remembered as a hero by his family...drunk driving doesn't really fit with that image they have of him.

Thats a very good point.

I agree with pretty much everyone - this is too convenient of a set up for it to be this simple. Plus, what others have said about Mandy Moore saying it won't be until next season that we find out exactly how Jack dies tells me this isn't as straight forward as they're showing right now.
