This is us..

What I got from it was that he put so much in to making her happy, the house livable and his work so relentlessly that he exhausted himself not just mentally but physically. He pushed himself right over the edge and it's something he's prone to do. She was warning William that she would step in if it got to that point trying to help him.

I'm bothered by something silly: why did Randall not get a "K" name as well?

Well, the name of the next episode is "KYLE", so that must be the name of the baby that died, because we know it was a boy & the other names started with a K. In the next episode we learn how Mom struggled to bond with Randall and maybe there will be some insight into how he got his name.

I got the impression that they didn't know what the babies would be until they were born. Ultrasounds were not the norm back then and certainly not to determine gender so you would think they went in with three boy names and three girl names. (We had two of each picked even though we knew very early on the were b/g.) So, Kevin, Kyle and...Randall? I'm trying to put my head in what was the norm back in 1979, kwim? Going by my youngest brother and about a dozen cousins born 1977-1980ish. Hopefully this (non) mystery will be solved for me next episode, lol.

Well, they did have u/s back then, just not routine. Since they knew it was triplets, a high risk pregnancy, she would've had some u/s. I didn't have any extra names for my twins, but did for the other 3, because I didn't find out what I was having.

If I am remembering right, I thought something someone said in the first episode indicated they were having 2 boys and 1 girl. I do want to rewatch the first episode again, so if I do that this afternoon, I'll quote from there. :)

I'm not saying they didn't, just that it was limited. My mom was very high risk with my brother (1978) and she had exactly one. Like I said, I'm just trying to put my head in that time frame and what might have been likely. U/S was a fairly new thing back then and from what I recall they were very hesitant to use it. For a triplet pregnancy yes, I could absolutely see them using it but then wouldn't they have known about the cord around the baby's neck and immediately insisted on a C section?

I was thinking of watching it again myself. What made me think they didn't know was the doctor's wording. Something like "you have a baby girl but the third baby, a boy didn't make it." Not, "your son didn't make it."

Remember, the doctor was not their doctor, so maybe they did know and he was not aware.

I loved both episodes of the show and was so happy to see the doctor back in the previews.

Good point, I forgot about that.

is considered the little brother

I never thought of this answer until I just read your post.
Randall was the last one that came to their family so he would be the youngest brother. When you have multiple births they always know who is the oldest even if it's by minutes or seconds.

Whichever was born first forgive me I forget would be the oldest child then the next would be the middle and Randall the last baby come into that family that day would be the baby. I'm sure growing up they always made references to this. Kids being kids. Not counting the one that passed of course.

I watched both shows last night. I really enjoyed both of the episodes.

I do not think the necklace is a memory of the (dead?) husband, I think it is a memory
of the deceased son. I thought when he gave the necklace to the mom, he said "this is....and then
she cut him off and said "I know what it means" (or something like that). It is a moon but thinking it is a symbol
of the son they didn't get to take home. She did say she would never take it off.

Ooooh that's interesting and something I didn't catch! I would be really sad if Jack and Rebecca got divorced though....

I thought Rebecca said, "I know.....our song." when he gave her the necklace. I think it symbolized their marriage.

I remember this line because I immediately though of the song "It's a marvelous night for a moon dance......."

Aaahhh thank you. Well that mystery is solved lol. Thanks!

I also thought she said "our song" (and was trying to think what their song might be), but then just now, reading this I was thinking to myself that maybe she said "our son" and not "our song" :upsidedow

I went back and re-watched the episode. It was definitely "our song." A song was playing in the background, but I don't know what it was or if it was their song.

I wouldn't have expected them to use the name for the baby that had passed but on the brink of the 80s there were plenty of "K" names back then. I wonder if it will play into Randall feeling a little more of the separation from his siblings. They also call him "little brother" even though they were born on the same day. Though we call my DD "the youngest" even though she's only two minutes younger than DS. I'm probably way overthinking it, lol.

I know I'm overthinking it, cause I wondered how they know Randall is the youngest. Since he was born outside the hospital, dropped off at a fire station, and then brought to the hospital, I'd kind of assume he was born minutes/hours before Kate & Kevin.

I was thinking the same thing. He's probably considered the youngest because he was the last to join the family even if he is physically older. But then I started overthinking some more and wondered if he was seen too much as a "replacement" for the third triplet instead of as himself when they were babies. It will be interesting to go back and see how it all plays out.

Was this on this week, did I miss it?

I laughed at this, it is a TV show. It is funny how we can become so invested we apply reality to fantasy, notice I said we. I do it all the time when a show has someone in my career field.

:rotfl2::rotfl2: My DH had our cable upgraded to XFinity One so he could talk to his remote. Well wasn't he pissed when he realized that it dumped all his saved shows. :rotfl::rotfl:

We switched to Xfinity One last fall. I'll admit it was pretty traumatizing to lose all my previously set recordings!

This is weird- I looked up the cast and says Dr only in one episode.. But they showed him in Ep 3? Right?

And Randall's 2 girls are only in 2 episodes

I think Gerald McRaney is too big a star for just a short appearance in the pilot.
