Hmmm... so throwing this out there...
I think that maybe the model planes were out in the garage, where his brother's stuff was, and that is why they don't get destroyed in the fire. I think he goes after Kate's dog, and MAYBE? he is hit by a car. There is anger at his drinking, but he's also up on a pedestal, so I'm not sure that he was drunk when he died. There would be too much anti-drinking in the family if that were true. We first heard about there being clues about his death when the dog showed up, we saw the cast, and Randall and Kate with Randall's girlfriend. So, maybe Sophie had picked up Jack since he's in a cast and probably can't drive (that wasn't his car in that clip, right?). There is a fire - maybe the dog gets loose and Jack goes after it. Kevin doesn't know about the disaster, and he's kissing Sophie, so it had to be some time after they spent that last day together. I don't remember seeing soot on any of them, so they aren't in the fire when it happens.
