This Is Us- Season two

Hmmm... so throwing this out there...

I think that maybe the model planes were out in the garage, where his brother's stuff was, and that is why they don't get destroyed in the fire. I think he goes after Kate's dog, and MAYBE? he is hit by a car. There is anger at his drinking, but he's also up on a pedestal, so I'm not sure that he was drunk when he died. There would be too much anti-drinking in the family if that were true. We first heard about there being clues about his death when the dog showed up, we saw the cast, and Randall and Kate with Randall's girlfriend. So, maybe Sophie had picked up Jack since he's in a cast and probably can't drive (that wasn't his car in that clip, right?). There is a fire - maybe the dog gets loose and Jack goes after it. Kevin doesn't know about the disaster, and he's kissing Sophie, so it had to be some time after they spent that last day together. I don't remember seeing soot on any of them, so they aren't in the fire when it happens.

The plot point "This Is Us" fans have been waiting for with equal parts dread and curiosity is almost here. Papa Pearson will die.

Of course, thanks to the time-hopping nature of the plot, he's already dead. And even after fans see him die, he'll still be around in flashbacks.

But the mystery around Jack's passing will be a mystery no more.

Spoiler alert: If you haven't watched the latest episode of "This Is Us" ... what are you waiting for?! Check it out, and then come back here!)

Tuesday night's episode of the tearjerker series didn't seem like a setup to sad times — at first. In fact, there was hardly a reason to reach for the tissues at all.

Until the message of the final minutes sunk in.

As viewers will recall from the season premiere, we already know that Jack's death is somehow related to the fire that destroyed the Pearson family home. Now we know something else about the fire — there was no warning.

In an aside that would have seemed like nothing without those all-important past clues, viewers learned that Jack and Rebecca forgot to buy batteries for the smoke detector. It's as simple as that. A mistake anyone could make.

And according to one producer, that's the point.

"We’re trying to brace people and help people prepare," Isaac Aptaker explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. "It’s a way of showing that there’s so much going on in these characters’ lives right now, and there’s so much that they’re dealing with. It’s so easy to make a simple mistake. Of course, looking back, we all know what that leads to, but life is hectic. Sometimes you forget to get batteries."

There's something about the mundane nature of it that makes it seem so real.

But for fans who don't believe Jack's death is really imminent — especially after many expected it during last season's finale — rest assured, it's happening.

"Without giving away exactly what episode we’re going to see the death, we are very close," Aptaker said. "We’re not pulling any punches. This isn’t like, 'Oh, they’re going to get batteries next week,' and everyone will be on Twitter cursing us. You are watching the events that lead to this man’s untimely death."

Which means every moment Jack shares with his family could be the last.

"Now that we know we’re this close to the death, every time Jack has an interaction with one of his kids, that’s even the tiniest bit emotional, it has this added weight to it because we, as an audience, have this bird’s eye view and can see what’s coming," he said, adding, "We’re certainly very mindful of that whenever we’re crafting these moments, that a little goes a long way, because you know that the audience is sitting there going. 'Ooh, is this the last time they talk?' And very soon it will be because like I said, we’re not pulling punches with that smoke detector — it’s coming."

Ready or not.

Well, we know there was a fire at a house. And we know the model airplanes survived. So, somehow those two things intertwine..

I think that maybe the model planes were out in the garage, where his brother's stuff was, and that is why they don't get destroyed in the fire.

That could work.

Good article, @Mizzoufan - thanks for posting it!

Ugh

From now on I may have to watch the episodes when I’m alone in the house. The ugly cry will be embarrassing.

I didn’t even think that every conversation could be his last. That makes it even worse.

I want them to pull the bandaid off to get it over with. It’s almost too much buildup at this point.

I have never been so emotional invested in show and dreading losing a character expect for losing Derek on Greys Anatomy but losing Jack will be worse.

I think Kate will blame herself for the smoke detector not having batteries. When Kate ran out of the store her mom was upset she left without telling her. It would be easy to see that as the reason Rebecca forgot to get the batteries. That would explain why Kate might feel guilt over her dad’s death. It could also explain part of Kate’s weight issues because she ran out of the store upset because she could not fit into the dress for the dance.

She *did* fit into the dress though. But in her mind the attention she received was because she was fat so she put on the smaller dress to feel fat again.

That's interesting. I took it that she was upset that she did fit into the dress and it didn't "fix" her -- so much so that her family hadn't even noticed that she'd lost the weight to fit into the smallest dress she pulled. If weight was supposedly her problem and she'd been losing the weight and no one noticed, what was wrong with her and why bother if no one seemed to notice her for anything but fat?

I don’t disagree I’m just going by what she said to Madison and the scene they showed while she was talking to her. I don’t recall her saying anything about her family not noticing just that fitting into the size dress (she had a 7 written on her arm and that’s what she put on first) didn’t make her feel like she thought it would so she put on the smaller one because she was used to that feeling.

That is what I got from the conversation also.

Yeah, I just went back and rewatched it because I thought maybe I’d missed something. She says it didn’t solve anything and she was more comfortable being angry at herself for being fat because that’s who she was. Then she puts on the smaller dress to get that feeling.

I was remembering it wrong. She didn't fit into the smallest one, she tried it on knowing it would match the way she felt inside. So deeply painful. Hopefully coming to an understanding of Madison's pain will help her gain understanding of her own in a way that enables her to live healthier in a lot of ways.

Also, we've known since the show started that Jack dies at a young age. The way they wrote Derek off the show was ridiculous in so many ways.

Exactly. They had started gradually ruining the character of Derek, making him a jerk. And then he stops his car in the middle of the road to check his phone. Are you kidding me?

And not a single vehicle on the road the entire time he's helping the crash victims, and no cell service - until the very minute that he's getting ready to drive off. Mmm hmm. Man, that episode really ticked me off. lol

He mom should of went to the dressing room with her, or at least waited in the area. Kate would of never walked out of the dressing room area. The scene was written stupid.
