This is Us- Season six

It was mentioned that she is a junior in HS, so that would definitely make her 16 or 17.

My thoughts...
1. The purchase of the smoker made zero sense in that scene. I get that it will tie in later, but way it was brought into this episode felt very forced. It's sad that we're starting to see the demise of Kate and Toby.
2. I too was glad that Kevin didn't go for the young co-star. It shows he's actually maturing. I felt awful for him in this episode, but overall I think he and Madison are doing a pretty good job of co-parenting given their situation. Kevin needs his own house for sure.
3. I LOVED Beth in this episode. She is so good at calming Randall down and being the voice of reason. I think they're going to have to help Deja see Malik in a responsible way. As Deja said, it's likely to happen whether they support it or not, so they might as well help her with chaperoned visits of some sort.

When Deja met her boyfriend, he was 16 and she was '2 years younger'. How long have they been going out? If she is now 16 and he is 18, then it's rape.

Anyways, you don't let your daughter even at 16 or 17 have a weekend sleepover with a boyfriend. And if you do, you don't expect nothing to happen.

Regarding Toby and Kate, I thought that the original idea of the show was for both the actors who played Toby and Kate to lose weight and watch their transitions. Toby lost the weight, Kate never did. So they've got to change it, I guess.

The storyline where Kate met her ex-boyfriend from 20 years previous made no sense at all. Why would you gain 200 pounds then want to confront an ex-boyfriend and make him upset/jealous in any way? He's more relieved he left you now.

OK-- I may be a little off here but last night I noticed what could be the beginning of Kate's issue with food. All the 'good' moments revolved around some sort of food. She was eating popcorn at the movie, then the ice cream sundaes. There have been some others too.

I agree with others, if I had called to pick up my lost child that was supposed to have been with my husband there would have been the WTH were you doing conversation.
Oooooooo good catch!

She is driving in Pennsylvania, so she’s at least 16.

As someone else mentioned, they didn’t “let” Deja go to visit him in Boston. Deja says she was studying at Tiffany’s house.

I thought Rebecca being so incredibly calm and loving to Jack about Kevin disappearing was so off. Yes, it happens to all of us - what awful memories - but we are not saints, responses are filled with with a myriad of emotions that are difficult to control.

I get she was absolutely loving to Jack in that moment because she knows he has had enough terror, but it felt disingenuous regardless. Being so lighthearted in nature

I think they were trying to contrast Kate/Toby's marriage dynamic and highlight differences. But still.
See for me I think Rebeccas reaction was a mix of she knew something like this could happen (let’s be real we all know it was gonna be Kevin but with little Randall wanting to help everyone and Kate bing the only girl on the movie trip she was prepared) and that she knew he was trying to do something good for the kids. It was also a completely different time and while I agree that argument is not valid for a good chunk of things, it’s not as worrisome as today. The fact that was the first indoor movie theatre made them feel safe.

Also I’m guessing Rebecca was prepared to go out anyway. Hence why she got there so fast.

Maybe I'm not following it close enough then. But that's a big grounding and never seeing the boy again moment if you're lying like that.

The age of consent is 16 in both PA and MA.

This is just a strange technicality, but.... the FEDERAL age of consent is 18. If anyone crosses state lines, like Deja did, the federal age of consent (18) trumps the state age of consent.

Anyways, it's hard to tell the ages of characters as they move around so much in time.

The other part is, a hot movie star really, really likes her. And she's gorgeous too. And she can't find a man? It seems that her relationship with a hot movie star means nothing to her self worth. Really? You've got a top 1% of men after you, yet you feel you can't catch anyone?

She's settling with someone who's not even in her league? Makes zero sense in real life.

Not everything is about looks.

And not everyone wants to live the very public movie star life.

It's too bad that it didn't work out between her and Kevin, but I don't think she's "settling" for the guy she likes now.

I too thought the "I'm missing my family so I'll buy a smoker." thing was really odd...I can't help but think "Gee they ruined sales of slow cookers and now they're going to mess with smokers"....

UHG I hate seeing Kate and Toby start to fall apart. Yeah, something happens with the smoker. In the blurry flashback, it sounded like Rebeccas voice yelling "Jack!" So I wonder if Rebecca was visiting and Kate lets Rebecca watch Jack and the accident happens and that sets off Toby. He did make a remark about the babysitter being too young so he seems to have issues with someone else watching the kids besides him and Kate.

The smoker was kind of odd, but I think they were trying to say that the smoker will bring everyone together? Toby mentioned having parties and gatherings to make memories.

Love Beth. The comment about how they see Deja playing Candyland and she is really playing the game of Life was great. I think Deja is going to move to Boston to be with Malik.

Feel bad for Kevin. He kind of has to man up though and accept that his relationship is what it is. They are separated and he and Madison have to share the kids. Yes, he will miss things, but so will Madison. So do countless parents who work and put their kids in day care.

Loved how both Rebecca and Madison pointed out that the days are not perfect. Yes, the moms see and do more with the kids, but it's not all playing at the park and having fun. Lots of it is messy diapers, vomit and crying.

It was interesting to see the four fathers deal with different things. From infancy to teenager.

I can see that part of it, even though it doesn't seem she ever tried. But the whole relationship had maybe 10 minutes of screen time total.

Whose life?

League? What about a good fit in personality and desire.

How is Kevin the top 1% of men? And what does that have to do with her self-worth anyway?

And I not so sure Kevin really likes/loves her anyway. I sometimes wonder if it might be a case of wanting what he can not have.

--------

I do think it is a shame that they did not - well so far - work out. But I truly think she feels it is not a good fit for her.

The smoker thing was strange to me as well. You're home 36 hours at a time and you're going to spend most of that time smoking meat so you can have a BBQ. Why not just by a regular gas grill.

I'm not sure how it goes in Pennsylvania - but in my state you can take driver's ed courses at 14 and you have to log a certain number of driving hours with a licensed driver before you can move on to the next step, and then eligible to drive on your own at 16 if you do everything required to get your license. So yes, we have kids on the road at 14 with adults.

According to this you have be 16 to get a learner's permit in PA.

PA requires kids to be 16 before they can get their learner's permit. 16 1/2 for license.

That was part of the weird part. When Toby showed her the smoker she said something like, "what? we already have a grill?"

I’m so happy someone else caught the voice sounding like Rebecca. There is a chance she could be there and it sets off a flood of memories and memory issues
