this is such a sad sick world

New Yorker here. From Day 1, the NY Gov. and the NYC Mayor have OPENLY supported the peaceful protests over George Floyd and the BLM movements. They have been very clear that there is a HUGE difference between the violent LOOTERS and criminals who exploited the protests and marches to do their own criminal activities at the same time and as a cover for their own activities. They condemed those people saying they have nothing to do with either George Floyd or the BLM movement.

Here is one of the power point slides the NY. Gov. used during one of his many news briefings on the George Floyd/BLM matter, making it clear that we know the difference between the two groups:

Protestors%2Bvs%2BLooters.JPG

The Gov. encouraged and advised the protestors, so that their protests don't just turn into another protest where, over time it dies down and nothing gets changed, he told them they must name specific agenda to fight for and reform. That even as governor, he only has so much power to create laws. It takes the will of the people telling our legislators what they specifically want changed. He suggested a list. The peaceful protestors listened and became very specific in what they want changed.

All the major cities in NY state as well as many smaller towns joined the peaceful protests. Within a few weeks NY state had enacted 10 new civil rights and police reform laws.

You live in NYC and don't see the crime rate going up considerably??? It is out of control due to the policies of the mayor/governor of NY. Whatever spin you want to put on it, it's fine but statistics is statistics. Also, who said anything against peaceful protests?? Peaceful protests are the American Way.

I'm not ignoring anything. As a matter of fact, I protested right here in NYC. The first BLM street mural in Brooklyn is in my neighborhood.

What I'm not going to do is allow the actions of a few to distract me.

Hey did you see the new one that was painted on Thursday? It's in front of a famous, gold tower on Fifth Avenue. Painted very peacefully.

Again, NO one ever said there is anything wrong with peaceful protests!!! I am talking about the crime rate in NYC that has escalated considerably because of policies from the NY Governor/mayor, including no bail laws. Yes, data/statistics does matter, if you care to look at it:thumbsup2

Great, glad they didn't destroy anything, however, the mayor should be concentrating on keeping crime under control as it has been skyrocketing. Hoping NYC doesn't turn into another Chicago🙁

Some crime is up, some is down. Overall it is down compared to June of 2019 https://www1.nyc.gov/site/nypd/news/pr0706/nypd-citywide-crime-statistics-june-2020

I see the crime rate going up because some of the NYPD is now sitting on their butts, pouting because the Mayor shuffled $1 billion of their to other services. Some were also frustratedly feeling their hands were tied, that if they used force in rightful situations, they might be dinged for that. Like the looters, many criminals are exploiting this time period for their own purposes.

(BTW, The Gov. doesn't agree with how the Mayor realocated funds, but that is another story. They have a long history together. )

Also, who said anything against peaceful protests?? Peaceful protests are the American Way.

I'm glad you agree. It appeared that you were lumping the two groups together and couldn't see PAST the looting and violence to the positive outcomes that the peaceful protests are about.

To the logical/rational people on this thread (which don't seem to be too many), please pray for NYC and look at what is happening to this once safe, great city!!! The crime is going way up due to radical people running it!!! Look at the video's of innocent people (many elderly) getting punched in the face by thugs, just doing it because they are violent! I have family that lives there and they cannot believe what is happening to this once great city due to the radicals running it!!! It's beyond sad to watch it's demise!!!
This is very similar to someone's tweets I've seen recently. :scratchin If you want to be taken seriously, lay off the melodramatic language and punctuation.

I get some of what you said but sorry we cannot compare Saddam Hussein, who murdered thousands of people to generals in an army, which is part of our American history, right or wrong!!!
Actually yes we can. Nathan Bedford Forrest in fact murdered or ordered the murder of hundreds of surrendered troops that we know of in just one incident. That's just for starters and that's not even counting what he did with the KKK.

To the logical/rational people on this thread (which don't seem to be too many),
How to win friends and influence people, Chapter 5. Insult them.

My children's high school is changing their mascot, which is a cowboy because the school administration is saying "cowboy" is racist and sexist. It is also costing the taxpayers over $100,000.00 because they have to rip up the football field which they just installed a few years ago and that alone is going to cost over $76,000.00. What's scary is that the school administration's mindset!!! Many parents are up in arms about this irrational thinking.

You claim to be in the New York Area. I googled and found one school in the area changing its name from Cowboys. I found the field on Google satellite. If the field is grass they need do nothing but let the grass grow, mow it, and the paint will eventually be gone by next season. Or they can just sod the area. If it is artificial turf, they only need replace the portion of the endzone that has Cowboys written on it unless it is over 10 years old in which case the top layer needs to be replaced anyway because it's worn. If it is crumbturf, they will have to replace the whole thing, not because of the Cowboys, but because it is crumbturf. In no way is getting rid of the Cowboys mascot alone costing them 76k in field repairs. There are other things most likely that they're doing at the same time.

What is the excuse to destroy the statue of Frederick Douglas former slave who worked to help free slaves? Or Hans Heg who died fighting to free slaves. Or in the uk Alfred Fagon the first black poet to get a statue. They are not just attacking these of confederates they are just attacking anyone, I mean they are having a go at Gladstone because his father had something to do with slave trade not him his father.

Well, you get some quotes from contractors and let me know because every parent has been told it is going to cost over $100K., they need to change all the uniforms because the bad word "cowboy" is on them also. We don't want the children to get emotionally damaged wearing a bad cowboy on their uniform! The administration also said they have been thinking of changing the name since 2004-2005 but then let them install a turf field a few years ago with Cowboy on it!!! Rocket scientists!

Can you please share your data/statistics? I’m having a hard time finding anything showing that crime has increased dramatically in NYC over the past month.

Probably, just to be violent and act out, like most of them are. How about taking poor Aunt Jemima off a syrup bottle. People loved looking at that African American woman and she looked so happy, positive and a good cook. Irrational behavior!!!

Did you actually read what I wrote?

It would be easier to take you seriously without all of the hyperbole

Yes, and what has the shootings have to do with the tearing down of statues, which is what the person showed up on the thread about? They aren't even rioters pretending to use the protests as cover. Those shooters aren't coming out of the woodwork because statues are being torn down. Some are gang related. They are exploiting the fact that the NYPD is going through growing pains, which will eventually get sorted out. Interesting pivot off topic.

The part that most people in this thread are in denial about, is the manner and violent behaviors of these protestors/rioters. If people felt that removing some statues was the right thing to do, how about doing it civilly, reaching out to governors/mayors of the cities where they are??? Why the violence??? Giving a pass to these violent rioters and letting them break the law and watching apparently sane people justify it, is more disturbing then the destructive, law-breaking criminals!
