My sister was allowed into our local shelter as part of the media to interview evacuees. She's doing a documentary. First of all she noted that it was a little difficult to get them to warm up to her, she attributed it to their pride and not wanting to be seen as just victims but she started by just asking if there was anything they needed her to bring them back from the store that maybe wasn't being provided. She had come with magnifying glasses for those who had lost their glasses and scarves for the women to tie their hair up since quite a few had'nt been able to comb their hair. So many people there wanted to read their bible but didn't have their glasses with them. Some requested Monopoly and other board games. One person requested the Daily word. Any way after they established that she wasn't one of those "holier than thou" types just there to bless a few heathens they opened up. she got this really great interview of a man who was evacuated out of N.O. The first thing that struck me as I watched the footage is that he was so good natured and humorous, the second thing that struck me was something he said: When asked why he didn't evacuate. he said, ( I'm paraphrasing) "I could have left, my family evacuated early but there are so many elderly in my neighborhood that I knew couldn't leave. They didn't have money for hotels they didn't drive they had no where to go, so I stayed behind to help them out and they all made it through." That my friends is the epitome of a southern gentleman. He said that no one expected it to get this bad but they made it through. He got them Ice to keep cool, water and food. He said their were five.
When you think of the south, you have to know that it was more than just him. By and large they take care of their elders and their women. I'm not saying that no one else does but he was just so southern. I have known cousins just like him. I'm only one generation removed and it is just something so special about how they take care of eachother. Just sharing.
