I know, it broke my heart. I heard about this and another similar instance in the U.S. on Fox news last week.
A few children have died here in Europe too this way (Belgium or Holland I think) where a parent has gone to work forgetting the child is in the car.
It's so very sad and tragic but I do have a hard time understanding it. I haven't had a child yet so i'm the first to admit I have no idea of the pressures, stress, tiredeness etc which people experience but it seems so unfathomable to me that someone could forget a child was in their car!!!
A few weeks ago I had gone to Tescos and parked up, just me and Joshua, when parked next to me was a car with 4 children in, the eldest looked about 6 and the other 3 were all younger, including a baby in a seat.
Ok, so the windows were open, but they were so rude to Joshua as I got him out the car!
I was fuming and said to the eldest child " You should learn not to be so rude and if you've got nothing nice to say then don't say anything at all!
I was that mad I nearly went to customer services to tell them that there was 4 children left alone in a car, but thought it's not my problem.
Even with everything in the news about poor Madeline McCann, I can't believe people will STILL leave their children unattended.
I don't think the law can do anything to that mother now that will make her feel worse than she does.
That poor poor child - the mother will spend the rest of her days thinking about the terrible way her baby died and that it was HER fault.

I've got three daughters and my biggest fear is something bad happening to them - I don't know how I'd cope if I lost one.
I can't understand how anyone would leave a child alone in a car. A pinch of common sense and some risk analyses should tell them its not acceptable. My heart goes out to all those poor innocent children.
