Check with your library first. Some have better options for e-books than others. One reader on another thread indicated she could only check out 3-5 books at a time, and had very poor availability.
My local library ties into a larger city network (Cleveland) and lets me check out up to 20 books for my nook at a time.
I would also do more research on the kindle library thing first too.
I love my nook and find it easy to navigate and get around. It is a tad heavier than a kindle, have compared with a co-worker. However when you put it in a leather cover, it feels just like the weight and size of a standard paperback!
