Thinking of bringing my neice...

The other day I was thinking about our awesome Spring Break trip I have planned and I got the bright idea that we should bring my 8 year old neice with us.

We are a family of three; my son is 12. They get along fairly well. We are going to Hollywood Studios one day before our cruise and to Clearwater a couple of days after.

My neice has never been out of state, flown, seen the ocean or Disney.

We are going with just birth certificates and ID. No passports.

So, anyone have any suggestions or things for me to consider before finalizing my plans?

A permission slip from the parents/guardians allowing you to take said child out of the country. Also a medical permission slip, just in case.

I'm not sure DCL does it, but some cruiselines don't allow non-custodial adults to take minor children out of the country without a passport. That may be something you need to check.

You should look up the documents required for sailing with a minor that you are not the guardian of, other than that..have a blast planning!

Are her parents o.k. with it? Recently we had a huge(!) discussion here about a father who didn't want his kid accepting charity.

I'm not convinced that was a "real" scenario. The profile seemed to be created for that post and only posted on that post.

That's awesome you're taking your niece! I would probably ask her parents to get her a passport, I'm not sure I would be comfortable taking another person's child out of the country without one (although another poster had a good point that DCL may require them to have a passport if traveling without a parent). Definitely have them send a medical power of attorney.

Sounds like a blast. As long as she would be accosted to the rules and boundaries you set up while on board (no pools without you being there, no going in anyone's room, etc), then you shouldn't have much issue. It's great to give her so many firsts. I would also consider a passport as others have said, to include one for one of the adults. This way in case something happens you'll at least have one adult going with. But that's the risk side. Thousands of cruisers complete voyages every day with no need to have a passport and no ship diversion.

We took our nephew and we all had a great time. It's so magical to experience firsts through their eyes. I don't remember exactly what form Disney required, but in addition we brought medical power of attorney and asked the parents to get a passport. The last two were our choices. If the cruise is just over to Bahamas I would not feel as strongly as a cruise that goes to Mexico, etc. You will love having her with you!

We took my neighbors daughter on vacation and I found a form online that I used to outline medical permissions. I was dealing with parents who share custody so I was especially careful about getting permission for treatment. Also look into insurance for your niece. You need to make sure you are noting who will be financially responsible should she need medical treatment while she is in your care. This a case where your trip insurance can help you cover those pieces.

I would gladly take my niece, but only with:
  • Good trip insurance covering my niece,
  • Documentation of medical power of attorney over her for the duration of the trip,
  • My niece having a passport, in case an emergency called for a flight back to the U.S., and
  • A notarized letter from her parents giving me authorization to take her out of the country.

Is there a link for this post? Curious now.
